INTERCHANGEABLE PANEL SIGN A Filed March 9, 1955 s sheets-sheet 3 Inventor "7?-D.Gerng Attorney Patented Aug. 27, 1935 UNITEDy STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
The present invention relates to a sign and has for its prime object to provide a device of this nature including one or more panels capable of being quickly and easily changed.
Another object of the invention residesin the provision of a sign of this nature which is exceedingly simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, thoroughly efficient and reliable in use and otherwise Well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more `fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a sign embodying the features of my invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a vertical central section taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure l.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail section taken substantially on the line 4--4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a detail section taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a detail section taken substantially on the line 6-6 of Figure 4.
Figure 7 is a. horizontal transverse section taken substantially on the line 'I-l of Figure 1.
Figure 8 is a. similar section with a panel removed.
Figure 9 is a perspective view of one of the panels.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that the letter F denotes generally a frame in which is disposed a plurality of panels P. There may be one or more of these panels P.
The embodiment of the frame F disclosed in the drawings comprises a pair of uprights 5 and B, a plurality of cross members 1, and a top cross member 8. The upright or side rail 5 is formed on its inner edge with a wedge shaped longitudinally extending groove 9. The upright or rail B is provided with a plurality of sockets I0 opening outwardly through the inner edges of the rail 6 and in which are slidably mounted bolts I I controllable and operable by conventional lock mechanisms I2.
Each panel P comprises a plate I4 surrounded by a frame I 5, one side of which has fixed thereon a wedge shaped rib I6. 'I'he other side rail is provided with indentures Il for receiving the bolts I I.
From the above detailed description it will be seen that the side of a panel P having the rib I6 is first inserted so that the rib is seated in the groove 9 and swung inwardly and then the locks I2 are operated to project the bolts II in the recesses I'I thereby locking the panels in place. In this way, it will be seen that the panels may be quickly and easily put in place and removed as may be desired.
It will be noted that I have not limited myself to any particular number of panels, any particular use of the sign or to any particular, size shape or the like thereof.
It is thought that the construction, operation, utility and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without amore detailed description thereof.
The present embodiment of the invention has been described in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplication since in actual practice, it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or saoricing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a sign construction of the class described, a frame having a rail provided with a groove and an opposite rail provided with sockets, slidable bolts in the sockets, means for moving the bolts, a panel having a rib seated in the groove and having indentures receiving the bolts.
2. In a sign construction of the class described, a frame having a rail provided with a groove and an opposite rail provided with sockets, slidable bolts in the sockets, means for moving the bolts, a panel having a rib seated in the groove and having indentures receiving the bolts, said rib and said groove being wedge shaped.
3. A sign of the class Adescribed comprising a frame including a pair of uprights, one of which 4 RAYMOND D. GEARING.
