Description

July 23, 1935.
C. H. SHAPIRO CHILDS GARMENT Filed July 7, 1954 K I'L INVENTOR Char/e s H- Shah/r0 gtai orms ATTORNEY Patented July 23, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to childrens garments and more particularly to such garments as creepers, rompers or bobby-suits.
Garments of this description are made in standarcl sizes such as one-year old, two-year old,
etc. Children, young children particularly, have substantial differences in weight, height, and general build for their ages. The body portion of the garments are made full enough to compensate for large varieties in the girth of a child. However, when a child is taller than. the average the garment will bind at the crotch region, This is annoying and leads to considerable discomfort for the wearer.
The object of the present invention is to provide an exceedingly simple means of overcoming this serious objection without, in any manner, altering or changing the standard construction of the garments.
Referring to the drawing forming a part of the following specifications:
Fig. 1 is a front view of a childs garment showing this invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary detail sectional View taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the adjusting strip; and
Fig, 4 is an edge view of the adjusting strip.
The garment selected to illustrate the invention is what is known as a creeper. The design of the upper part of the garment may be changed to form any one of a number of different styles of childrens garments.
The lower portion 5 of the garment is made in skirt form and is secured together at the central part so as to form leg portions 6. The standard method of securing the garment together at the central portion is to provide the rear portion of the garment with buttons 7 and the front portion with button-holes 8, which co-operate with each other. Where a child is above the average height there will be ample room in the body portion of the garment but it will bind at the crotch, thus making the garment useless or causing the child to become sore due to chafing and rubbing, and in a short time the buttons will pull off or the button-holes pull out.
In accordance with the invention an adjusting strip Ill is provided with each garment. The cost of the adjusting strip is inconsequential and if it is not necessary to use it the strip can be thrown away by the purchaser of the garment.
The strip iii is provided with buttons II and button-holes 52. When it is to be used on the garment the buttons Ii engage the button-holes 8 and the buttons l engage the button-holes l2.
In order to provide a still largergarment the adjusting strip it is provided with a pleat or fold Hi held by a row of stitching M. The row of stitching may be easily pulled out if desired.
It will thus be apparent the adjusting strip provides two additional sizes for the garment.
Other fastening means might be utilized, instead of the. buttons and button-holes.
Such changes in details of construction as would be apparent to-one skilled in the art are to considered as coming within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A childs garment including a skirt portion, a series of fasteners adjacent the lower. edge of the central front portion and a series of cooperative fasteners adjacent the lower edge of the central rear portion to form a crotch when secured together, and an adjusting strip for the crotch portion, said adjusting strip having fastening means on one edge for cooperating with the fas teners adjacent the lower edge of the central front portion of the garment, and fastening means on the other edge for cooperating with the fasteners adjacent the lower edge of the central rear portion of the garment.
2. A childs garment including a skirt portion, a series of fasteners adjacent the lower edge of the central front portion and a series of cooperative fasteners adjacent the lower edge of the central rear portion to form a crotch when secured together, and an adjusting strip for the crotch portion, said adjusting strip having fastening means on one edge for cooperating with the fastenersadjacent the lower edge of the central front portion of the garment, fastening means on the other edge for cooperating with the fas teners adjacent the lower edge of the central rear portion of the garment, and a pleat on the intermediate part of said adjusting strip.
