Abstract

A device for sculpting the fingernail comprising a block having a front surface, a first side surface, and a second side surface. A layer of first sandpaper is placed on the front surface of the block, and a layer of second sandpaper placed on the first side surface. A layer of third sandpaper is placed on the second side surface. The first, second, and third sandpapers each have a different grit size from the other sandpapers. Also, the first side surface is curved inward to form a concave arch, and the second side surface is curved inward to form a concave arch.

Description

    I. INTRODUCTION
  • This invention relates to a device for fingernails. More particularly, the present invention relates to a device for filing, smoothing, and shining the fingernail of a user.
  • II. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • In general, filing devices for a person's fingernail comprises an elongated flat object having a layer of sand or other abrasive material placed thereon. Some of these boards are referred to as emery boards. It is known that there are a broad range of sandpapers, which are sheets of material having sand or other abrasive material coated thereon. The sandpapers vary from the being extremely coarse to being extremely fine. The more the coarse sandpaper the lower the grit number, and the more fine the sandpaper the higher the grit number. The sandpapers having a high grit number in the range of over 400 are commonly referred to as a buffer strip and accomplish various functions including smoothing and shining the surfaces of the fingernail.
  • For sculpting which can include, filing, smoothing, and shining the fingernail, a user may need two or more nail files having different grit sizes to accomplish the desired effect. In such instances, two or more individual nail files having sandpapers with different grit sizes will be necessary. Some nail files including emery boards have been made in combination with a sheet of sandpaper placed on the top surface and the bottom surface of the elongated object, with each sandpaper on the top and bottom surface having a different grit size. There are disadvantages of such combination nail files in that only two different grit size sandpapers can be placed thereon. To overcome such a disadvantage, some such combination nail files have further divided each sandpaper on the top and bottom surface into two or more sections having different grit sizes. Although such combination nail files have multiple sections of sandpaper with different grit sizes, there still is a disadvantage of the combination and other known nail files in that they are usually straight and flat when both the edge and top surface of the fingernail is curved. It can be difficult to create smooth curved surfaces of the top surface and edges of fingernail using a flat and straight nail file. As such, a device for the fingernail as taught in the present invention is desired.
  • The present invention provides a device for the fingernail having multiple grit sizes of sandpaper provided thereon. The present invention also provides a device ideal for filing, smoothing, and shining the curved surface and edges of the fingernail.
  • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • The present invention is contrived to overcome the conventional disadvantages. Accordingly, to achieve these and other objects, the present invention provides a device for the fingernail which improves filing, smoothing, and shining of the user's fingernail using one object.
  • The present invention is a nail file device comprising a block formed from a predetermined material. The block has a front surface, a first side surface, and a second side surface. A layer of first sandpaper is placed on the front surface of the block, and a layer of second sandpaper placed on the first side surface. A layer of third sandpaper is placed on the second side surface. The first, second, and third sandpapers each have a different grit size from the other sandpapers. Also, the first side surface is curved inward to form a concave arch, and the second side surface is curved inward to form a concave arch.
  • In an alternative second embodiment, the second side surface is curved outward to form a convex arch and still has the layer of third sandpaper placed thereon. In an alternative third embodiment, only the first side surface is curved inward to form a concave arch.

  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
  • With reference to the accompanying drawings, a nail file device according to the present invention will now be described. As shown in FIGS. 1 to 3, the device 10 for sculpting the fingernail of a user comprises a block 15 of a predetermined material having a front surface 19, a first side surface 20, and a second side surface 22 opposed to the first side surface 20. The block 15 shown in this embodiment is made of a lightweight foam material. The first side surface 20 is curved inward to form a concave arch, and the second side surface 22 is curved inward to form a concave arch. The front surface 19 has a layer of abrasive material 25 placed thereon, which in the embodiment shown is a sheet of sandpaper made of sand or another abrasive material. The first side surface 20 has a layer of second abrasive material 29 placed thereon, and the second side surface 22 has a layer of third abrasive material 30 placed thereon.
  • Each of the first, second, and third abrasive material has a different grit size for accomplishing a different desired function. The first abrasive material 25 has the most coarse grit size and should be sufficient for filing the outer edges of the fingernail. In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 to 3, the second abrasive material 29 is a layer of buffer strip having a predetermined high grit size sufficient for smoothing the fingernail of user, which includes evening the surface of the fingernail. This can be accomplished with a grit size for the second abrasive material in the range of 500 to 700. In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 to 3, the third abrasive material 30 is a layer of buffer strip having a predetermined grit size higher than the second abrasive material and sufficient for shining the fingernail of the user. This can be accomplished with a grit size for the third abrasive material in the range of 2000 to 4000.
  • In a second embodiment of the present invention as shown in FIGS. 4 to 6, the device 10 for sculpting the fingernail of a user comprises a block 40 of a predetermined material having a front surface 42, a first side surface 44, and a second side surface 45 opposed to the first side surface 44. The block 40 shown in this embodiment is also made of a lightweight foam material. The first side surface 44 is curved inward to form a concave arch, and the second side surface 45 is curved outward from the block to form a convex arch as shown in FIGS. 5 and 6. The front surface 42 has a layer of abrasive material 49 placed thereon, which in this embodiment shown is a sheet of sandpaper made of sand or another abrasive material. The first side surface 44 has a layer of second abrasive 50 material placed thereon, and the second side surface 45 has a layer of third abrasive material 53 placed thereon. Each of the first, second, and third abrasive material has a different grit size. The first abrasive material 49 has the most coarse grit size and should be sufficient for filing the outer edges of the fingernail. In this embodiment, the second abrasive material 50 is a layer of buffer strip having a predetermined high grit size sufficient for smoothing the fingernail of user, which includes evening the surface of the fingernail, and the third abrasive material 53 is a layer of buffer strip having a predetermined grit size higher than the second abrasive material 50 and sufficient for shining the fingernail of the user.
  • In a third embodiment of the present invention as shown in FIGS. 7 to 9, the device 10 for sculpting the fingernail of a user comprises a block 60 of a predetermined material having a front surface 63, a first side surface 65, and a second side surface 66 opposed to the first side surface. The block shown in this embodiment is also made of a lightweight foam material. The first side surface 65 is curved inward to form a concave arch. The front surface 63 has a layer of abrasive material 69 placed thereon, which in this embodiment shown is a sheet of sandpaper made of sand or another abrasive material. The first side surface 65 has a layer of second abrasive 70 material placed thereon, and the second side surface 66 has a layer of third abrasive material 73 placed thereon. Each of the first, second, and third abrasive material has a different grit size. The first abrasive material 69 has the most coarse grit size and should be sufficient for filing the outer edges of the fingernail. In this embodiment, the second abrasive material 70 is a layer of buffer strip having a predetermined high grit size sufficient for smoothing the fingernail of user, which includes evening the surface of the fingernail, and the third abrasive material 73 is a layer of buffer strip having a predetermined grit size higher than the second abrasive material 70 and sufficient for shining the fingernail of the user.
  • Although the invention has been described in considerable detail with reference to certain preferred versions thereof, other versions are possible by converting the aforementioned construction. Therefore, the scope of the invention shall not be limited by the specification specified above and the appended claims.

Claims (12)

1. A device for sculpting the fingernail of a user, said device comprising;
a block of a predetermined material, said block having a front surface, a first side surface, and a second side surface opposed to said first side surface;
said first side surface is curved inward to form a concave arch;
said second side surface is curved inward to form a concave arch;
a layer of first abrasive material disposed on said front surface of said block;
a layer of second abrasive material disposed on said first side surface;
a layer of third abrasive material disposed on said second side surface; and,
each of said first, second, and third abrasive material having a different grit size.
2. The device as described in claim 1 wherein said first abrasive material has the most coarse grit size.
3. The device as described in claim 1 wherein said first abrasive material is a sheet of sandpaper; wherein said second abrasive material is a layer of buffer strip having a predetermined high grit size sufficient for smoothing the fingernail of said user; and wherein said third abrasive material is a layer of buffer strip having a predetermined grit size higher than said second abrasive material and sufficient for shining the fingernail of said user.
4. The device as described in claim 1 wherein said block is made of a foam material.
5. A device for sculpting the fingernail of a user, said device comprising;
a block of a predetermined material, said block having a front surface, a first side surface, and a second side surface opposed to said first side surface;
said first side surface is curved inward to form a concave arch;
said second side surface is curved outward to form a convex arch;
a layer of first abrasive material disposed on said front surface of said block;
a layer of second abrasive material disposed on said first side surface;
a layer of third abrasive material disposed on said second side surface; and,
each of said first, second, and third abrasive material having a different grit size.
6. The device as described in claim 5 wherein said first abrasive material has the most coarse grit size.
7. The device as described in claim 5 wherein said first abrasive material is a sheet of sandpaper; wherein said second and third abrasive material is a layer of buffer strip.
8. The device as described in claim 5 wherein said block is made of a foam material.
9. A device for sculpting the fingernail of a user, said device comprising;
a block of a predetermined material, said block having a front surface, a first side surface, and a second side surface opposed to said first side surface;
said first side surface is curved inward to form a concave arch;
a layer of first abrasive material disposed on said front surface of said block;
a layer of second abrasive material disposed on said first side surface;
a layer of third abrasive material disposed on said second side surface; and,
each of said first, second, and third abrasive material having a different grit size.
10. The device as described in claim 9 wherein said first abrasive material has the most coarse grit size.
11. The device as described in claim 9 wherein said first abrasive material is a sheet of sandpaper; wherein said second and third abrasive material is a layer of buffer strip.
12. The device as described in claim 9 wherein said block is made of a foam material.
