(olie-219V This invention aims to provide novel meansfor supporting a bed bottom or platform yieldably, to provide novel means whereby the working parts of the structure are hidden from View, and to supply a device of the class described which will be inexpensive to manufacture, simple in construction, and capable of withstanding hard use.

Other objects will be made manifest as the description proceeds. A mechanic, working Within the scope of what is claimed, may depart from the precise showing of the drawings without departing in a corresponding degree from the spirit of the invention.

Fig. l is a side elevation, parts being broken away, Fig. 2 is a top plan, parts being broken away, Fig. 3 is an end elevation, parts being broken away, and Fig. 4 is a cross section.

The drawings show a bedstead frame comprising corner posts I. The posts I have vertical guide slots 2. The slots 2 extend entirely through the posts I. The posts I at the head of the bed are connected by a head plate 3. 'I'he head plate 3 is secured at il to the outer surfaces of the posts I which are at the head of the bed. The posts I at the foot of the bed are similarly connected by a foot plate 5.

Each post I at the head of the bed is connected to the corresponding post at the foot of the bed by side rails B. The side rails 6 may be angle bars, having inwardly-projecting horizontal flanges. The Vertical flanges of the side rails 6 are prolonged to form brackets l, secured at 8 to the inner surfaces of the posts I. The brackets 'I include outwardly projecting arms 9, which may be set into the outer surfaces of the posts I. The arms 9 are secured at II! to the posts I. The arms 9 and the securing elements IIJ are hidden by the foot plate 5 and the head plate 3.

A platform II is disposed between side plates I 6, the platform including if desired, a bottom member I2 and a top member I4, which are secured together. The bottom member I2 may be made of metal, and the top member Ill may be made of wood or any other suitable substance. The longitudinal edges of the top member I4 of the platform II are secured at 50 to the side plates I6. The platform II is disposed far enough below the upper edges of the side plates I6, so that the upper portions of the side plates can retain a mattress (not shown) against lateral displacement. The platform I I is cut away at its corners, as shown at I5, to accommodate the 55 posts I. The ends of the platform II are spaced as shown at 5I from the head plate 3 and the foot plate 5.

The side plates I6 have reduced ends II.v The ends I'I of the side plates I6 have vertical movement in the guide slots 2 of the posts I. The ends of the side plates I6 are in slidable contact with the head plate 3 and the foot plate 5. This construction holds the ends of the platform II spaced, as at 5I, from the inner surfaces of the head plate 3 andthe foot plate 5. Therefore, the inner surface of the head plate 3 and the foot plate 5 will not be marred when the platform II moves up and down, and the platform and the side plates I6 will be prevented from movingendwise.

Depending studs I8 are secured at their upper ends in the platform I I. Compression springs I9 surround the studs I8. The upper ends of the compression springs I9 bear against thebottom member I2 of the platform I I. of the' compressionsprings I9 bear againstthe horizontal flanges of the side rails 6. The springs I9 form a yieldable support for the platform I l.

Nuts 20, or similar adjusting devices, are mounted on the lower ends of the studs I8; The nuts 20 constitute a means whereby the platform li4 may be made level, the nuts engaging the horizontal flanges of the side rails 6, wherein the studs I8 are vertically slidable. The upward movement of the platform II, responsive to the springs I9, may be limited either by the engagement between the nuts 20 and the horizontal The lower ends g flanges of the side rails 6, or by the engagement I9 yield and expand, the ends I'I of the sideplates I6 of the platform sliding in the vertical guid slots 2 of the corner posts I.

What is claimed is:

1. A bed frame comprising head and foot members, side rails connecting the head and foot members, a platform, side plates connected to the platform, the head and foot members of the bed frame havingguides wherein the ends ofthe side plates have Vertical movement, the side plates being located outwardly of the side rails and extending downwardly far enough to hide the side rails depending studs kcarried by the platform and slidable inthe side rails, and compression springs surrounding the studs and interposed between' the side rails and the platform.

2. A bed frame comprising posts having vertical slots, head and foot plates connecting the posts at the ends of the bedframe, side rails connecting the posts, sideplates located outward- 1y of the side rails and havingtheir ends slidable vertically inthes'lots, the sidevplatesnextending downwardly far enough to shield theside rails from View, a platform secured to the side'plates, the ends of the side plates being in slidable contact with the head and foot plates, to prevent the side plates from moving endwise, and: to pre-v vent the ends of the platform from engaging and marring the inner surfaces of. the head and foot plates, depending studs carried by the platform and slidable vertically in the side rails, and com# pression springs about the studs and engaged between the side rails and the platform.`

3. A bed frame comprising head and foot mem? bers including posts, side rails connecting the head and foot members, a platform, means for supporting the platform yieldably upon the side rails, and side plates carried by the platform and located outwardly of the side rails, the side plates being wide enough to hide the side rails and being guided for Vertical movement in the posts.
