Description
G. H. WELLER May 7, 1935.
DISPLAY CASE Filed April 3, 1934 Patented May 7, 1935 George H. Weller, Providence,V assigner. tofp A The Mason Box Company, Attleboro Y 'y Mass.,`a.rvcorporation of Massachusetts 4 'Y n A Application April l3, Seal No.A 7178,759 4' 1.2 claims.' (Cilaos-444) 'I'his invention relates to an improved box and particularly-a box of the typeV employedfor enclosing'fand displaying articles such as jewelry. In accordance with this invention the body por- 5 tion of the box is provided with an outstanding rim which not only aiords a vdecorative border for display purposes but whichpis also Yeffective in supporting the cover in spacedrelation to the jewelry or other article normally contained within the body portion of the box. This outstanding rim is soV arranged that it`may engage the cover soy that the latter may act as "a support when the box is open for display purposes.
In accordance with thisinvention the body portion of the box may be arranged so that it affords a portion disposedbelow thev outstanding rim to receive, the inverted cover inv intertting relation therewith, the'ri'mfin this position of the parts ,being engageable with the edges of therv side walls of thecover, thereby supporting the weight of the body portionof the box and'its,V contents. Thus, in this position of the parts, the cover acts as a :stand to support the body portion of wthe -box in a slightly elevated position. If it is desired to support the 4body 4portion of thebox a tilted position, an easel may be provided in the cover adapted to be swung'toa vertical position and engages the wider side of the box; whilerthe op` posite side -oiv the box rim engages the opposite wall of the cover, the 'body portion of the-box having apart adjoininggsaidlastfnamed sidejof the rim, which is ininterfitting relation with the inverted cover. 1 v
In the accompanying` drawing:
' Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a caseconstructed in accordance with the present invention; Y' Fig; 2 is a top view ofthe case in vits open posi-` tion;" 'l
Fig. 3 is'a section indicated by lines 3-1-3 of I Fig. 2; i "Y i1 Fig. 4 is a broken end elevation of the case; and Fig'. 5 isa view partly in sideelevation and partly'in section of the case in one of its open positions for display purposes. Y
In the` accompanying drawing, the numerall indicates the box or body portion of -the case which may -have a rectangular bottom2 andjupstanding rside Walls 3 with connecting end walls 4. `Secured to the walls 3 and 4 is a'perimetricrim 5, which may' comprise twov elements of different widths that. are preferably covered kwith thin sheet material of contrasting colors to afford an attractive decorative" border for the box. linac# cordance with this invention the rim 5 is arranged on the box so that the latter has a part disposed below therirn;"thus asshwn `in Fig-53, for eX- ample,l 4th "rim` '.iv may Abe disposed substantially intermediate-the height Vof the side and end walls.
In' the Yparticular v embodiment-V of Vthe invention chosen for the-purpose of illustration the rim 5 is formed of 'superposedstripsf'of'cardboard of diiferent'widths and covered with separate pieces.
ofA thin sheet material such asdifferently colored pieces oie- paper 30 and 3*I.` Wheneach of the two superposed layers of the rim are .stamped from' a single piece Aof cardboard theyV are of course integrally connected atthe corners,"r but a more economical construction involves* separate ypieces Y of material for i'the' ends vand A'sides `respectively. In any event the sideand end portionsof each of the superposed layersmof the rim arefinter- 'connected at the corners' by thefcovering material 30 and 3| which is cemented to the'layersof cardboard. I'helpreferred means for holding the rii'n onthejboxY comprises a layer of covering material 32 which' covers the bottom ofthe box, thence extends upvalong thel'sides of the boxas shown at`33 in Fig. 3 and thence extends out`` wardl'yjalong theunder side of the vrim Vas shown -The cover I0 mayhave a rectangular top portion II, endwalls'fIZand sidewallsv I 3fat right angles thereto,v the end and side-Walls of ther cover being engageable in intertting" relation with the corresponding wallsor vthe box when the case is `in its closed'positionfas' shown in Fig.'4. FA collapsible easel I4 may be secured to the top of the Vcover adjoining` one side wall I3 and may be arranged so .that itis swingable from'a folded positionjwherein it lieslin substantiallyparallel juxtaposition tothe cover I YI fto the position shown in Fig. 5. This easel preferably compris'esfa piece of cardboard containing a U-shaped cut to form the leg I4,*` the cardboard being scored lat 2| and"22 to form hinges. The portion 23 is cemented to the'coverto anchor the easel to the case. To collapse the easel the part I4 is swung upwardly about'the hinge 2| to upright position,
the part YI4is vthen swung about hinge 22V into the opening in part I4 from which it is cutout, and the two -parts are thenfswung about vthe hingle'2 Iagainst the top of the cover. Inside the box is a jewelry holder comprising a block 35, preferablyofwood, which substaniV piece of stiff paper 39 which in turn is covered by a piece of fabric or the like 40. The parts 39 and 40 are provided with slots 4I which register with the slots in the block 35. The fabric strips 38 are preferably cemented both to the block and to the covering sheet 39; and the top layer 40 is preferably cemented to the upper side of the sheet 39. A The parts 35, 38, `3l)u and 4Q are preferably assembled together before the holder is inserted into the box andthe holder is made to t the box snugly after the box has been covered with sheet material as indicated'at 42 in Fig. 3. While the slots in the blocls35 may correspond in number to the slots 4I inV the covering layers 39 and, I preferably provide a single slot extendin'g'from end to'lend of the block 35 under each of the rows of slots 4|, in which case the piecesof fabric.` 38 may likewise extend continuously from end to end of Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate one positionof the parts of the case when the latter is arranged for. display purposes. In this position of the parts the coverris inverted so that its sidevand end walls project upwardly from its bottom portion toengage over thelower part ofthe box; v and .due to the shape of the latter, thebox lies in nested, interi'ltting relationwith vthe upper part of the cover.A Fig. villustrates a second-position of the parts which may be employed if it is desired to tilt the articles to be displayed at a greater angle than that attainable by the arrangement shown in Fig. 3. It is evident that thisinvention affords a display box particularly suitable for jewelry, which may be characterized by a decorative, outstanding rim, that is eifective lnot only in supporting the upper part of the cover in spaced relation to the side walls of the box Vwhen in its closed position, but that is also adapted to be inverted and act as a stand forthe box when the latter is open for display purposes. Due to the provision of the easel I4, the contents of the box may be displayed in any one of. aplurality rof positions,
as' preferred, in order to permit proper inspec-` tion 0fy theY contents by prospectivevpurchasers. V- As the conjoint Y resultof -the thickness of the rim andV its integral connections at the corners the rim aifords a much greater resistance to rack:- ing in a horizontal plane thangif the comprised-a band of cardboard secured -flatwise against the sides of the b ox. y
I vt should be understoodvthat the present disclosure is for the purpose ofillustrationonly and that this invention includesall modifica-- tions and equivalents whichY yfall within vthetscope of the appended claims. Y
