Description
Sept. 7, 1937. H, H TQDD 2,092,483
` HoG BEATER PADDLE Filed June 22, 1936 Patented Sept. 7, 1937 UNlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
The invention relates to improvements in hog beater or scraper paddles and has for its primary object the provision of an improved beater paddle of the character indicated which is so constructed yand arranged as to prolong the time during which the same may be eectively used.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which Fig. 1 is .a face view of a beater paddle embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 an edge View of the same; and
Fig. 3 a transverse section taken substantially on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing comprises the usual flexible rectangular body lll made of rubber reinforced by canvas or the like. The body IIJ is provided at one end with a transverse slit iI and with suitable bolt holes for the passage of bolts I2 by means of which said body may be secured to the usual beater paddle mounts or arms or" the usual spider wheel employed in such apparatus for scraping the hair from hogs in packing plants. A cup washer I2 is arranged as shown under the head of each of the bolts I2 and the arrangement shown permits of some little sliding movement between the sections of the body It on opposite sides of the slit I I.
At its other end the body It is provided with the usual scraper blades or clips I3 secured thereto by means of rivets lil.
In use, a plurality of paddles or scraper meml bers are secured to the spider wheel bymeans of the bolts I2 and so arranged thereon as to cause the scraper blade I3 to project in convenient positions to facilitate the application of the hog bodies thereto, thereby scraping or removing the hair from the hog bodies in the usual way.
By providing the transverse slit II in thesecured 'end of the body Ill and the cup Washers I2', as shown, sufficient sliding motion between the adjacent body parts and increased flexibility is obtained so that the necessary and essential bending or flexing of the paddle during operation is extended and -distributed over the entire portion of the paddle between the blades I3 and the securing rivets, thus preventing concentration of such bending at a point immediately beyond the innermost blade I3, as is usual in such paddles. It has been found that this concentration of bending at the point indicated causes relatively earlier deterioration and destruction of the paddle and that this distribution of the flexing caused by the increase of exibility resulting from the transverse slit I I prevents this concentration and consequent injury to the paddle, whereby the useful life of the paddle is greatly prolonged.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details disclosed but desire to avail myself of such variations and modications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a flexible body transversely split at one end to increase its exibility; and scraper members secured to the other end of said body.
2. A device of the class described comprising a flexible body of reinforced rubber transversely split at one end to increase its flexibility and there provided with rivet holes for securing the same to a traveling member.; and scraper members secured to and projecting from the face of the other end of said body.
3. A device of the class described comprising a flexible body having means at one end for securing it in operative position, there being a transverse slit extending inwardly from said end to a point well beyond said securing means; and scraper members secured to the other end of said body.
4. A device of the class described comprising a flexible body having securing holes at one end for securing it in operative position, there being a transverse slit extending inwardly from said end to a point well beyond said holes; cup shaped washers positioned around said holes; securing i
