Description

May 11; 1937. F. SANDA 2,080,187
WINDOW FASTENER "Filed March 12, 1956 By W mu. a g 5 A tlorncyS Patented May 11, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in window fasteners.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a window fastener for securing windows of the vertical sliding type.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a fastener for sliding sashes wherein the sashes can only be opened to a certain extent, unless the sashes be entirely closed to permit disengagement of the fastening means, whereupon the sashes can be entirely opened.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a. fastener for window sashes Which will be of simple construction and substantially tamper-proof.
Still another important object of the invention is to provide a fastener for Window sashes which will serve effectively to prevent entry through the window by unauthorized persons.
Other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following specification.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 represents a fragmentary elevational View showing the fastening means.
Figure 2 represents a fragmentary elevational View of the upper sash showing the slotted plate.
Figure 3 represents an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view on line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken substantially on line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the bolt.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that numeral 5 represents a window frame while numerals B-'l represent the upper and lower sashes respectively. On one vertical rail of the upper sash 6 is secured the elongated rectangular shaped plate 8 provided with the longitudinally extending slot 9 therein terminating at its lower end by merging with the circular opening I0 in the plate 8.
Situated behind the plate 8 and formed in the vertical rail a is the longitudinally extending channel or groove II in which the head l2 of the bolt I3 is slidable.
The adjacent vertical rail of the lower sash 1 is denoted by reference character b and has at its upper end a plate 12' secured to its inner side and another like plate l3 secured to its outer side, both plates being suitably secured by screws and each provided with a circular opening registering with a bore l4 through the said sash rail 17.
The bolt I3 is slidable through this bore l4 and plates [2 and I3 when it is desired to retract the head I! through the circular opening ID of the plate 8. However, when the sashes are in the position shown in Figure 1 and the head I2 is registering with the circular opening ID, if it were not for the small radially disposed lug l on the head I2, it is likely and very probable that the head l2 would jar out of the groove ll. However, this lug prevents this and the bolt I3 must be rotated so that the head is in such a position that the lug I5 is registering with the slot 9 before the bolt can be entirely retracted from the groove ll.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A latch of the character described comprising a slotted plate, said plate being provided with an enlarged opening at one end with which the slot therein merges, a slidably and rotatably mounted bolt provided with a head, operative in the slot, said head being of a diameter greater than the slot to normally prevent Withdrawal therefrom and said head being provided with a radially disposed lug capable of being passed through the slot of the plate when the head of the bolt is registering with the enlarged opening, said lug gravitating toward one side of the slot in the plate to normally maintain the lug out of registry with the slot when the head is registering with the enlarged opening.
