'atpumm oeater'iii, 1932.1 Serial No. 38,219." I
This invention relates to a fastening device for use in conjunction with a window screen or sash for securing, when used in connection with a window sash, the sash at a desired opened or closed position; and in connection with a window screen,
for securing the screen within a window frame in amanner to be readily removed therefrom.
Briefly, the invention consists in the provision W of a spring-retracted latch member adapted to Wbe mounted on the window frame, and a keeper plate adapted to be mounted on the window sash or screen as the case may be, and to be engaged 1 with one end of the latch member for securing the 7, window sash or the screen, as the casemay be, 16 m the desired position. I I
The invention, together with its numerous objects and advantages, will be best understood from a study of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein: Figure 1 is an elevational view of a window, showing the device used in conjunction therewith for securing the window screen within the window frame.
Figure 2' is an enlarged elevational view showing the latch member inengagement with the keeper. 7
Figure 3 is a sectional elevational view, withthe latch member shown engaged with-the'keeper.
I Figure 4 is a plan view of one end portion of a to cylinder or casing which slidably'accommodates the latch member. Y a 1 Figure 5 is an elevational view of aportion of a screen showing the keeper plate secured thereto,
I the keeper plate being shownin edge elevations 86 With reference more in detail to the drawing, it will be seen that 5 designates generally a win.-
dow frame, and 6 a full-length screen adapted to be arranged within the frame. 7'
In accordance with the present invention,'ea'ch vertical or side member 5a of the window frame 5 intermediate its ends is provided with a socket or recess 7 extending inwardly from the front face thereof and adapted to accommodate a cylindrical casing 8 which, on its outer end, is provided 7 .46 with a flange 11 suitably apertured for accommodating fastening screws or the like 10 for securing the casing in position. At said outer end the casing is provided with a lateral slot and the flange 11 with a notch, all of which is indicated generally by the reference numeral ,9,
As will be clear from a study of Figures 2, 3 and 1 claim. (01. 292- plate 11 is provided at its center with an opening I the inner end of the said notch in casing 8.
taching flange for the casing. At about the center thereof the plate forms an end wall for the casing 8 which has prior to the fixing to one 'end thereof of the plate 11, its ends substantially open. The
to accommodate the rod 12pand theslot in the plate extends radially with reference to said opening and across the outer end of the longitudinal notch' in thecasing 8, so as to accommodate the inner side of the finger receiving loop or frame 14 topermitthe rod 12 to be drawn inwardly under the action of spring 15; the inward movement of "the rod being limited by engagement of said inner combination finger-piece and keeper plate engag-j in g projection 14. The rod 12a is normally urged inwardly of the casing 8 through the medium of a spring 15 that is disposed about the rod, and
'- which has one end bearing against the collar 13,
and its other end bearing against the end wall of the casing S at theouter or flanged end of the casing asshown in Figure 3.
For cooperation with the latch member there .is'provided a keeper plate designated generally by the reference character 16, and the same is adapted to be secured to the side member 6a of the window screen frame, through the medium of fastening elements 1'7 engaged with the ends of the plateflfi. The plate 16 will be directly opposite the flange 11, and the plate is corrugated or otherwise formed to provide a groove 18 with which the projection 14 of the latch member is engageable as shown in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive. As is thoughtapparent, when the device is applied in the manner just described, the screenfi will be securelyretained within the confines of the window frame 5 by engaging the projection 14 of the latch with the groove of the plate 16. 10
When it is desired to remove the screen 6, all that is necessary is to draw the rod 12 outwardly from the casing 8 by passing the finger through the loop projection .14 and pulling outwardly against the spring 15. Outward movement of the rod 12 will result in a movement of the projection 14 from out of engagement with the groove 18, and the keeper rod 12 may then be rotated for placing the loop in the dotted line position shown in Figure 3. With the loop 14 in said dotted line position it is apparent that the screen 6 may be readily removed from the window frame.
While I have shown the invention as applied to a window screen, it is to be understood, obviously, that the device may be applied to a window frame and sash, or may be used in conjunction with a door and jamb. V 7
Even though I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the inven*' tion, it is to be understoodthat the invention is susceptible of further changes, modifications, and improvements coming within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
In a closure fastener, in combination, an elon gated casing open'at each end, an attaching plate,
secured to the casing atone end and provided with a centrally located opening, said plate having its marginal edge portion projecting laterally as; l
with reference to the casing and being also pro vided with a slot extending radially from said aperture to one edge of the plate, said casing at one end being provided with a longitudinal notch opening into said slot; and a latch rod having an end slidably and rotatably mounted in said casing and extending through the aperture in said plate, a collar on the inner end of the rod fitting slidably within said casing, a spring disposed about the rod andhaving one end bearing on said collar, and its other end bearing against said plate and normally urging saidrod inwardly of the casing, and a combined finger accommodating and keeper engaging loop on the outer end of the rod and'e'xtending laterally therefrom, said loop being accommodated by the slot in said plate and movable therethrough into and out of engagement with the notch in said casing.
