Description

B1 HoLTz SKIRT MARKER Nov. 10, 1936.
Filed Nov. 18, 1955 Patented Nov. 10, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
This invention pertains primarily to a skirt marker by means of which accurate markings of hems and seams in ladies skirts are assured. The invention is also adapted for use in other lines of the tailoring art such as mens trousers where accurate even seams are desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved but simple means for clamping the marking chalk and the measuring stick to each other. The entire device can be economically produced making it easily available to the woman who does her own sewing.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the illustrations in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a view showing the manner of using the device.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the marker with round chalk and yardstick in position.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the chalk holder showing the spring mechanism.
Fig. 4 is a top elevation with yardstick in section.
Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of Fig. 4.
Fig. 7 is a side elevation with at chalk, and yardstick in section.
Referring to the drawing; the chalk holder for the marking device consists of a concave elongated side portion I 0 having a plurality of inwardly bent fingers or teeth II at the forward end and flanged Wings I2 and I3 projecting at the edges of said side portion IIJ and a concave elongated opposite side portion I4 also having flanged wings I5 and I6 projecting from the edges thereof.
A pivot pin I'I is journaled through the center of the outer wings I2 and I3 and the inner wings I5 and I6, a tension spring I8 being coiled thereon, the end I9 being bent in such manner as to press against the inner curved surface of the elongated portion I0 while the opposed end 20 is bent in a similar manner and presses against the inner curved surface of the elongated portion I4.
In operation, the ends 2| and 22 of the side portions I and I4 respectively, are pressed together and a piece of round chalk or marking composition 23, at chalk 23a or square chalk (not shown) 5 is placed between the down bent ngers II of the portion I0 and the end 24 of the portion I4 and a yardstick 25 or similar measuring device is superimposed over the chalk or marking composition 23 and the ends 2I and 22 of the top and bottom portions I Il and I4 respectively are released.
The device is set on the yardstick 25 as shown in Fig. 2 at the height from the i'loor that is desired to turn the hem 26 of the skirt 21. Both the 15 chalk and the yardstick are held by jaws of the clip or clamp, which can be adjusted to any position desired.
By using the device in the manner shown, an absolutely even marking is assured.
I claim:
1. In a skirt marker, the combination with a measuring stick, of a chalk holder adjustable along the stick and comprising spring-pressed jaws clamping the stick and chalk against each other at the desired position.
2. The combination stated in claim 1, the holder having pivotally adjustable and oppositely recessed jaws between which the stick and chalk are clamped.
3. The combination stated in claim 1, the holder having a jaw concave on the inner side to hold the chalk and-another opposed jaw recessed and provided with inwardly projecting teeth.
4. In a skirt marker, the combination with a measuring stick, of a spring clip chalk holder having jaws engaging the outer sides of the stick and chalk and clamping the same together, to hold the chalk at any desired elevation on the stick.
