Be it known that I, ERNEST GALAssI, a subject of the King. of Italy, residing at Brooklyn, county of Kings, and Stateof New York, have invented a certain new and useful Combination Tailors Measuring Implement, of which the following is a specification. j I
This invention is an implement for use by tailors in taking measurements preliminary to the making of garments, said implement combining in an advantageous form means for performing a number of operations incidental to the making of the garment, such as cutting a pattern from the measurements, removing the bastings, ripping a seam, and sharpening the chalk so commonly used in marking. the fabrics.
i Measurements are commonly taken from the human figure by the aid of a tape line, but
so far as I am aware it has heretofore been V the practice tohold 01166116. of the tape line in the hand at a particular point and to extend the line by the aid of the other hand to other points. It frequently happens that the end of the tape line slips or is shifted from the particular or anchor point, owing to the length of the measurement or the direction in which the line is run, such as around the chest or the-Waist line or to the end of the arm, or to the bottom edge of the trousers, as a result of which the work becomes tedious to a certain extent and the measurements are somewhat inaccurate and faulty.
According to this invention, means are provided for anchoring one end portion of the tape line so as to relieve the tailor from the labor of holding said tape line at a particular point, thus facilitating the operation of taking measurements and insuring accuracy to a marked extent. In a practical form, the implement comprises a body meniber provided with a clamping device, such as a binding nut adapted to be screwed on a threaded stud, the latter affording a pivotal point for an and piece on the tape line. Said nut acts, also, as a support for an anchor pin or hook whereby the implement may be attached byzinserting the pin or hook and the tape line rigidly held by adjusting the nut.
The body member is novel in form soas to produce a cutting edge for ripping a seam in a garment and for sharpening the chalk, and in addition thereto the body member aflords a stem by which the bastings may be pulled out and it aifords, also, a support for the pivot of a toothed wheel adapted for the Work of tracing and perforating the material of a pattern.
Other features of the invention and the advantages thereof will appear in the course of the description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive illustrate diagrammatically several modes of using the implement of my invention.
Fig. 6 is a view in elevation of the implement.
Fig. 7 is a cross section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
Referring to Figs. 6' and 7, the implement is shown as comprising a body memher A, a tape line B, and an anchor member C. I
The body member A may vary in shape and dimensions as desired, but in a preferred form. this member is a substantially flat piece, the top edge of which is curved at a and is formed with an arm 7) and an exten sion 0. The arm 5 and extension 0 constitute the head portion of the body member, the latter being fashioned to produce a stem 03 extending outwardly from the head portion. The stem is tapered at the free end to form a point e, and on the face of the stem is provided the graduations forming a scale d in inches and fractions thereof.
The arm 6 carries the journal pin or stud (Z of a toothed tracer wheel D, the same being rotatable freely on the journal. The extension 0 is formed with an inclined edge 0 extending inwardly with respect to the body member, said inclined edge 0 being sharpened to a cutting edge and said inclined edge lying at an angle to the rounded edge of a lug f so as 'to form a notch therewith, as shown in Fig; 6.
The tape line B is composed of flexible material and graduated in inches and fractions thereof, as usual. One end portion of this flexible line is attached in a suitable manner to a metallic end piece '13], the latter beingshown as having a slot 6 through which the end portion-of the tape line passes and by which the end piece and the tape line are securely attached one to the other. F is a threaded stud secured in any desired way fixedly to the body member at a point close to the curved edge a and intermediate the arm 6 and the extension 0.
The metallic end piece ll of the tape line is fitted loosely on this stud so as to swing or turn thereon, the stud thus serving as a pivotal connection for the tape line to the body member. A clamping nut G is screwed in the stud and is adapted to be turned into frictional contact with the metallic end piece E, whereby the tape line is held fixedly in position with reference to the body memher, but by turning the nut in a backward direction, it releases the end piece E so that the latter can turn freely on the stud, thus enabling the tape line to be run in any direction and at a desired angle to the body member when taking the differentmeasurements.
The anchor element C is an important feature of my device for the reason that it affords means for retaining the tape line at a fixed point while the tailor is engaged in taking measurements. This anchor element may be embodied in various forms and an tached in different ways to the body member but in a preferred form the anchor is a curved hook or pin pointed at one end, said hook or pin being curved over the top edge of the body member. As shown, the anchor hook or pin is loosely connected to the clamping nut G by fitting an eye or loop of said anchor pin into a groove of the nut, see Fig. 7, whereby the anchor pin may be inserted into the garment and the nutmay then be rotated freely in order to retain the end piece E in fixed relation to the body member, said nut being rotatable without in any manner disturbing the anchor pin or hook. It is apparent that the nut G may be provided with a milled edge, as shown, or the nut may be in the form of a winged nut for conveniently operating it.
Some of the uses of the implement are shown in Figs. 1. to 5 inclusive, but in each instance the anchor pin and the tape line are brought into service. As shown in Fig. 1, the implement is used for taking a chest measurement by thrusting the anchor hook into the garment and passing the tape line about the body. Again, the anchor pin is hooked into the collar or neck portion of the garment and the tape line used for obtaining the arm, shoulder and other measurements, see Fig. 2. For measuring the length of the trousers leg, the body member is thrust for the curved top edge a to have contact with the crotch and the anchor element hooked into place, thus allowing the tailor to run the tape line to the bottom edge of he trousers, see Fig. 3. The modes of using the implement for obtaining the waist and hip measurements are shown in Fig. whereas F 5 depicts the use of the implement in obtaining measurements of the hip and length of the female garments. In each of the examples shown, the anchor element is hooked into place so as to fixedly attach the tape line at one point without requiring the tailor to hold one end of the line, and thus the tape line can be run in any direction, allowing the use of both hands. The pivotal connection between the line and the body member'enables the tape line to be swung around as required without straining ,or twisting the line, and when required the nut G can be adjusted to clamp the line at a fixed point, as is sometimes desirable.
In my device, the body member A performs an important function in conjunction with the several other parts composing the implement. In taking a measurement as in Figure 3, the curved top edge a of the body member fits well up into the crotch of the trousers so that the tape line and body member is held by the hook C at a given point while the tape line is swung around as may be required for several measurements. Again, the body member affords a handle for grasping the instrument when it is used in a manner for the edge 0 to sharpen the chalk or is used to run the tracer wheel over a pattern, the body member serving as the means whereby pressure is applied forcibly to the tracer wheel. Again, the body member affords means by which pressure is applied to the implement so as to force it into material for perforating the latter.
The implement is useful for a variety of purposes. The stem (Z can be handled for removing the bastings, whereas the inclined edge 0 affords means for ripping the stitches, and also for sharpening the chalk used in marking on the fabric, etc. It will be understood that the implement can be manipulated to bring into use the toothed tracing wheel D in marking patterns, etc, and on the whole the implement is quite useful and serviceable to tailors in performing the various opera tions peculiar to their trade.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A tailors implement embodying a body member, a tape line having a pivotal connection with said body member, the axis of movement of said pivotal connection being at a right angle to the body member, and an anchor member connected with the body member separately from the pivotal connection of the tape line therewith.
2. A tailors implement embodying a body member, a tape line pivotally connected therewith for movement on an axis extending at a right angle to the body member, means for fixedly clamping said tape line at one end portion thereof to said body member, and an anchor member connected with the body member.
3. A tailors implement embodying a body member, a tape line having an end piece, a threaded stud on which the end piece is connected pivotally to the body member, a
tending at a right angle to the body member, an anchor member connected to said body 10 member and means for clamping an end portion of said tape line in fixed relation to the body member.
