(01. 51161) best shown by Fig. 2, sothat theblade-holder may My invention relates to a device forsharpening raa'orblades in a quick and effective manner, and more particularly the double-edged razor blades for safety razors. During thev sharpening operation theblade is carriedaround with one side of. each edge in contact with the inner surface of atubular or cylindrical sharpening element. At a certain point in each circuit the bladeis carried across the interior of the sharpening element until the opposite side ofeach edgecontacts withf-the inner surface of said sharpening element, whenthe rotary movement is resumed In otherwords, during one circuit of the blade one .side of each edge is subjected tothe sharpening action and during each alternatejrevolution the other side of eachedge is subjected to the sharpening action. The bringing of first one side and then the other of .the edges into contact with the sharpening element is automatic and requires no attention on thepart of the operator.

The ends of the sharpening. element 2 are closed by heads 4 provided withperipheral flanges .6 and consisting preferably of resilient .sheet metalso that saidflangesfi will frictionally enoperation. I i
gage the ends of the sharpening element 2 and thusprevent it from turningwith'the razor blade during the sharpening operation. The sides of the heads 4havecorrespondng segmentalchanreadily pass from one to the other.
The blade-holder 12 consists of a pair of clamp members 14 each of which is provided at its reduced terminals withfianges 16 adapted to travel in the respective channels 8 and 10. One of the clamp members 14 is provided'with headed studs 1'7 adapted to pass through the medial openings of the razor blade A and a pluraity of key-hole slots 18 in the companion clamp member, which latter is then moved longitudinally to carry the reduced ends of theslots 18 beneath the heads of the studs 17 andthus firmly securethe two clamp members together.
22 designates a rotatable carrier for carrying the blade-holder 12 around in the sharpening element 2. The carrier 22 consists of a shaft 24, a pair of arms26, and a pair of arms 28. The arms 26 and 28.project laterally from the shaft 24 which is provided at its ends with trunnions 30 mounted in bearings 32 at the central portions of the heads 4. In order that a the blade-holder 12 .may be readily placed in position inthe carrier 22, I.
provide one of the heads 4 with a door 36 which is preferably connected to said headby hinge means 38. The door 36 may be held in closed position by either'frictionally engaging the outer periphery of the sharpeningvmember 2, or by. springs 40 associated with thehingemeans 38.
In practice the blade A is secured in position, between the clampmembers14 of the bladeholder 12, which latter is then placed between the arms 26 and 28, care being taken to locate the flanges 16 in the channels 8 or 10. The crank 34 is thenrotated and in turnrotates the carrier 22. As the. flanges 16. travel in the channels 8 those flanges which bear against the inner, segmental walls 20 ofsaid channels cause the blade-holder 12 to press the sides B of the blade A against the interior of the sharpening member 2 Fig. 2, to facilitate the sharpening When the flanges 16 reachthe adjacent end of the channels 10 they are caused to enter the latter bjythe outer walls 42 of said channels and the arms 26 of. the carrier 22. Continued pressure of the arms 26 against the blade-holder 12 causes the flanges 16 to travel through the I channels 10 and into the right end (Fig. .2) of the channels 8. flanges on the ends of said blade holder and projecting into the guide channels, and rotatable means for carrying the blade holder in a circuit within the sharpening element and coacting with said holder and the guide channels in holding one side of the razor blade against the concave surface of the sharpening element and in shifting said razor blade to carry its, opposite side into frictional engagement with said concave surface during each circuit of the blade holder.

A razor blade sharpening device comprising a cylindrical sharpening element, heads mounted upon the ends of said sharpening element and provided with communicating curved and transverse guide channels, a holder for holding the razor blade in frictional engagement with the concave surface of the sharpening element and having its ends projectinginto said guide channels, said blade holder being removable through an opening in one of the heads, a door for closing said opening,-
