ROBERTr LEE ARMSTRONG, oF LIiIGoLN,l NEBRASKA'.
HOLDER Eon sAEETY-nAzoR BLADES.
f yApplicationfiled*.Time 21, 1,924. Serial No. 21,460.
To all whom t may lconcern: e A j Be it known that I, ROBERT L. ARMSTRONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaste-r and State of Nebraska, have invented a new yand useful Improvement in Holders for Safety.
Razor Blaues, of which the following is a specication. '.f
This invention relates to holders for safety razor blades.
, The object is to provide `means for holding Vthe blades of safety razors ofthe double cuttingV edge type in a manner to avoid invin position;
closed and clamped to retain the same in position during the required manipulations 'y while sharpening, the liolder'being also usen ful for the utilization of cast offrrazor blades toy be used by seamstresses, etc., in ripping seams and for many other analogous uses.
A full and complete understanding of the invention may be obtained froma consideration of the following detailed description, taken in connectionwith the accompanying drawing forming a part. of thisspecification; it being understood 'thatwhile the drawing. shows a practical form ofthe invention, the latter is not to be confined' to strict conformity with the showing thereof,
but maybe changed or modified, so long ask such changes vor modifications mark no maf terial departure from the salient features'of the invention, as specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing, in'wliichl similar yreference` characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures:
Figure l-is a side elevationof the im roved holder with the razor blade clamped Figure 2 is an elevation o-f the reverse side thereof, thehandle .being broken away and shown in section;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section through the same;
Figure 4 is an end view of the holder and blade Figure 5;'is a perspective view ofthe members coiriprising the clamping and supporting means.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown t a base plate l, formed of suitable thin metal capable of being nickel plated,` as Vare all parts ofthe device. The base plate'is of PATENT] OFFICE. g
elongated, substantially rectangular form,`
the ends 2 being rounded, as shown, to vcon@ form to the shape of the razor blades commonly used in safety razors, Vthe base plate being somewhat longer than the blade. Onel longitudinal side edge of the base plate'is provided with anintegraL overhanging flange lwhich constitutes a seater guard i for one cutting edge ofthe razor blade 3,
i the outer edge rof the said fiange being lrounded to provide a rolling edge forthe de# vice in turning the same over on afy strop or. i
hone, during the operation of sharpening the bladein the ordinary, well-known manner. e
5, arranged substantiallyin the center of the plate 1, .and suitably securedr to the side .75 One rounded endedge of the base plate is provided with a centrally-located notch or recess 4 for a purpose to be explained,l and the: opposite end of the baseplate is prof' vided witli a longitudinally extendingfshank.
thereof opposite to the flange 3, the saidr shank 'being of half-round shape in crossgse'ction alnd'extending nearly to thenotch l, as clearly'shown in Figure 2 of the drawing.
The'shank 5 is provided with a recess a for the reception offtlie base plate l so that` r the upper surface of the latter and the'up'- per, flat-sideofthe sliankwill be flush, and
the two members may .be brazed or riveted. 'l
together. as desired. The outer freeend of v- Y the shank is reduced as at 6 to provide aV Vshoulder 6, and the Vsaid reduced portion,
j which is also half-round inf cross section, is
provided with threads, or the 'threads may be omitted.
Outstanding bosses or lugs 7 are formed l, and substantially at the longitudinal center line thereof, the said lugs being properly shaped and spaced apart toenter the holes to hold the''same from movement inthe holder, afterthe clamping means, to'be'described, has been applied.
CoLacting with the base plate 1 andthe on the upper or inner face of the base plate" .7a vprovided in the razor blade, and4 serving.
parts carried thereby, is a clamping bar 8,
which is also half-round throughout the inajior portion or its length and of the saine diaineter as the aforesaid shank 5, the said bar extendingl the 'tull length oi the base plate and shank and soineivhat beyond the terininal portion 6 ot' the latter, the flat side 9 ot said bar being adapted to rest upon the razor blade 3 and to hold the saine in position when. applied in a. manner to be described.
rihe clamping bar 8 has one end slightly tapered and provided with a hooi; i() which is adapted to lit in the aforesaid notch 4 et the base plate, and at the other end the saine is reduced, at li, to provide a shoulder 8 Correspondii'iggl to the shoulder 6, the length ot the tlat tace 9 of the bar being` such as to receive the hase plate l and the shank carried thereby, ivhen the hoolt l0 is engaged in the notch il. yBeyond the adjacent, end olf the tiat tace 9, the reduced cnn li ot 'tne clamping' bar is round in cross section and is threaded troni the aforesaid shouhiler to point a ljacent to the outer ial thereo'll, as clearly shown in Figure 5 or.. the drawing;
The elanuvingl bar 8 is further provided with spaced recesses l2 which receive the ends ot the longs or bosses 'i' Where they proict slightly through the razor blade 8 (see Figure 3), when the latter is properly7V placed bar. i
A tubular nietal handle 3, having),l suitable internal tare-ads, is adapted to Vbe screwed onto the extending, reduced end ll ot the clamping bar and the saine inay reinain in 'l at all times.
between the base and the clamping threaded connection therewitn The outer surface ot the handle i3 is preterably ltnurled in theV usual manner to iaeilitate turning the saine, and at the open end ot the threaded bore therein, the handle is preferably provided With a conical inouth lll.
:in applying' a blade to be stropped or ioned or ior other purposes, the said blade is placed upon the base plate l .vith one oin the cutting` edges engaged beneath the overhangingr lange or guard 5:3 and the bosses i' fittingl in the holes 7 of said blade. rl`he clainginp,` bar 8 positioned over the said bosses, and the hook l0 engaged in the notch 4 ot the base plate. lli hen the vtivo lnenobors are pressed together, the blade is securely clamped and the end ot the reduced portion 6 et the shank lits in substantial abutting relation to the end oi: Vthe flat face 9, and the co-actingg threads et the tivo halves forni a continuation of the threads of the extension il, and the handle may be screwed up onto the saine, the aforesaid conical mouth ist serving` to aline the ineinbers. By furl L Ycat :l no
ther screwing action thereoic until the end oi" the handle abuts against the shoulders 6a and 8, the blade is rnily hele in position. ln renioifingil the blade it is only necessary to nnscreiv the handle to a point slightly beyond the end ot the reduced portion 6 of the shank 53, as will be apparent, the handle re in: nine; on the terminal threaded portion otl th clamping` bar.
Froni the 'foregoing it Will be seen that a siinple, cheaply-inanutactured and strong; and durable holder tor safety razor blades has been provided, which will perinit otl stropping or honinoj said blades in the inanner ordinarily en'ipioyed in sharpenin 9,` the old style razor, and that the device inay also be einployed in holding such aZor blades when discerned tor shavinfij purposes, and thus nialie possible the continued use of the saine tor other purposes.
il/That is elainied is:
t holder for safety razor blades having' holes therein comprising' a substantially recta dar base plate provided with Vintegral lugs adapted to traverse said holes in the blade, and an integral over-hanging rounded ege Wllich constitutes a `guard along` one to receive one cutting;l edge oit said d base 'plate having a centrally lol ,ch at one end, and a longitudinal, substantial-.v halt round shank projecting i `nn t e rined integral with the base plate to and stiften the saine. a substan tial halt round rigid clamping bar having` its flat side adapted to bear on the blade and provided 'with recesses on the flat side to receive said lugs, said bar having` a hoolr at one end to engage said notch in the base plate. the clamping bar extendingthe full not I ot the base plate and shank but ot lly less vWidth than the base plat-e ing a Ynll round terininal portion proif'ided with threads, the said 'halt round projection or the shank interfitting and abutting the said teriniinil portion ot the said bar and Vhar-.fing alined external shoulders and a tu .iular one piece handle internally threaded to screw onto the terminal portion o'l` the claniping;l bar and also engage the said projecgion of the shank and having;` a conical. inout-h at vits inner threaded end 'to aline the said parts and engage said shoulders. 'v
