Description
Nov. 21, 1933. BACHRACH 1,936,045
SCARF Filed May 10, 1933 INVENTOR flriiuu' Ii. Bahrwk j BY RNEY Patented Nov. 21, 1933 UNETED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to scarfs or like articles of wearing apparel particularly adaptable for wear at bathing beaches, sport events or the like, although of course, usefully worn under other conditions. The object of the invention is to provide a scarf, with a pocket formed on at least one of its ends, so that the scarf while performing all of the functions of the ordinary scarf, will in addition, act as a container or carrying case for numerous possessions of the user.
When the scarf is constructed for beach wear, it may consist of an elongated body portion of either single or double-faced towel-like fabric, having the pocket formed on at least one of its ends by inturning and stitching down the end portion of the body. Closure means of a suitable construction is provided, and to protect the possessions of the user from dampness, the pocket is lined with a suitable waterproof lining such as oiled silk or rubber.
The average bather usually brings certain of his or her possessions on the beach, and having no facilities in his or her bathing suit, is somewhat at a loss to decide what to do with the money, cigarettes, eye-glasses and the other small articles carried to the beach. I am aware that various types of receptacles have been devised for attachrnent to the suit or belt of the bather for containing these small possessions, but these receptacles are usually designed to be carried on the bathing suit or belt of the bather when in the water. They are often not watertight so that they permit the water to reach the contents, or else are so bulky as to hinder the movements of the bather in the water. Many other bathers also carry a towel, robe or the like'on the beach to shield them from the strong rays of the sun.
The scarf contemplated by this invention combines in a single article the desirable features of a container for small possessions as well as a towel or the like.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein an embodiment of the invention is shown, Fig. 1 is a plan view of a scarf made in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 a view showing the same as it appears when worn; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of one end of the scarf, showing the pocket thereon, the flap thereof being partly folded back to disclose the waterproof lining. and Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
In the drawing 5 indicates the body portion of the scarf which may be of suitable size and shape, and is, preferably, made in the elongated form shown. At one of its ends the body portion 5 is provided with a pocket 6 which is conveniently produced by turning back or infolding on the line 16 a portion of the end of the body portion and stitching it down by the rows of stitching '7. The pocket so formed is provided with a waterproof lining 14 of oiled silk, rubber or other suitable material which completely lines the inside of the pocket and extends also over the inner face of the closure flap 10 as clearly shown in Figs. 3, and 4. A marginal line of stitching 15 secures the lining 14 within the pocket and to the flap l0.
The flap 10 is secured to the body portion by a transverse line of stitching 11 and is normally held over the open end of the pocket by suitable fastening means, such as the button 12 on the pocket and the co-operating button-hole 13 in v the flap.
In Fig. 2 the scarf is shown as it appears when in use, where it will be seen that the pocket is conveniently positioned at the end of one of the dependent ends of the scarf so that it is readily accessible to the wearer. The body of the scarf may be used as a scarf proper; as a towel or for any other purposes desired by the wearer; the waterproofed pocket containing his or her possessions.
While I have herein mentioned that the pocket shall be located at one end of the scarf, it will be obvious that one or more separate pockets may, if desired, be located on both ends of the scarf, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
What I claim is:
An article of the class described comprising, a lengthy section of absorbent towel-like material of uniform width intended for bathers use as either a towel or a protective scarf or both, the fabric section having one of its ends inturned and stitched down along the longitudinal edges of the section to form a pocket to hold the bathers possessions, the pocket being thus located at the end of the fabric section, a waterproof lining in the pocket and a closure flap for the pocket.
