The usual lubricant used to moisten the type is soapy water and in this position said lubricating water may alsol be most readily applied, if desired, to the upper face of thewax plate 46;

In this example it is assumed that the large sized box 76a when printing the heading 82a, is disposed horizontallyof the wax plate 46 and that, when printing Vthe long vertical column 82h, is disposed vertically of said wax plate 46. All the otherl type boxes are disposed horizontally of said wax plate in the particular illustration given, `but may be arranged to suit whatever may happen to bethe particular requirements. In other words, the Aarrangement of this improved stamping machine is such that the long direction of'eachtype box may be positioned in the longest direction of the space to be printed. It is to be understood that the presentmachine does not do the actual printing, nor` does it leven produce printing plates, but
' merely enables the rapid production of the wax plates from` which printing plates aresubsequently made by the electrotypingprocess.
The large type box'a (Figs. 6-8) for printing the full lined column 482h01"` Fig. 2 (and also the heading 82a) comprises longitudinal side wallsY '79 and 791 and end transversewalls 86 secured -theretoby rivets 87 or otherwise. The bottom V88 of said 'type box may, as shown, be formed integrally with "said side walls 79 and 791 and" has formed on its outer (lower) side a longitudinal dovetailed slot' 90 which is adapted to slidably receive the dove-.tailed slide 75 of the type carrier 68. A take-up section 91 atrone side of said slot `(see Fig. 7) is adapted to be moved v,transversely inwardly by a take-up screw 92 to compensate for wear, said take-up section being locked in adjusted position by a suitable, locking, countersunk cap screw 93. The whole type box 76a is clamped in any desired position'along the dove-tailed slide 75 of Vthe type carrier 68 by means of a clamp screw 94Y (see Fig.' 8) which carries a thrust block 95 at its inner end and is adapted'to force said block against-,the ad' jacent face of the type carrier andjto thus clamp the type box rmly thereto. This form and ysize of type box is ordinarily used where it is desirable at the adjacent extreme end of the block of the typeand spacers. Side clamping is desirable to kwithstand the side pressure imposed upon theA .type .as vthe latter enters the wax, said side pressure being causedby the unsymrnetrical shape of the type letters. This sideV clamping (though not in all cases necessary) -maybe effected by three side clamping vscrews' 100 `which are thread edthrough the side wall 79 of the type box 'and bear with their inner ends against a heavy side pressure plate V101 which lies against the'sides ofthe block of type andspacers.l This side `pressurev plate is suitably slotted at V102 so asat all times to properly clear the inwardly projecting ends`ofrthe end clamping screws 98, and `is preferably; so slotted at both/ends, as shown,`so as to'be reversible. *y ,K i

Such a condition arises for Iinstance iny printing the triple line of type83a (and also the single line of type 83h in the same row) of the rforrn card 81 shown infFig. l2. In this case, only side clamping of the type and spacers is necessary,-this being preferably accomplished by a pair of side clamping screws' 103 which are threaded through bushings 104 in the side walls`79b of the type box and are provided with heads 105 attheir inner ends which are countersunk into and bear against the adjacent face of the side 'pressure plate 10'1b'. When these clamping screws 103 are retracted to loosen the blockrof type andspacers, said side pressure plate "101D is constrained to likewise move voutwardly bythe provision of. confining straps 106 which bear against the outer faces of the lheads 105 of theY clamping screws 103 and are secured to the adjacent outer Vface ofv said side pressure plate by machine screwsA 107 or otherwise.' In constructing these type boxes or in disassembling the saine it is desirable to ren'- der the screws 107 accessible and this is accomplished by the provision of'screw driver holes 109 which permit a screw driver to be passed through the companion sidewalls 791) and to Where the type is to be centered (as in this case) itjis desirable to be able to build up the same-against an adjustableabutmentk plate 108 which lies against the inner face of the side Wall 79127y of thetype box 7Gb and is provided with a ysquare faced guiderib 109 which vis slidably received within a longitudinal slot llpformed in Vsaid sidewall 791b. The tiny sized type box'shown in Figs. 15-17 is adapted, for instance, to the stamping of a Wax Y plate upon which impressions 85 are to be made in such spaced relationship as to permit the use of a plurality of boxes on the type carrier bar at the same time.
