The lever 90 is arranged in the path of an arm 98 depending from the carriage 14 so that as the latter approaches the en d of its movement to the left, Fig. 2, said arm 98 will contact with andrpuslithe lever 90 backwardly, causing it, through the ratchet ymech- Y anism, to rotate the disk 82 one step.

Said clamp 100 is mounted upon an arm 102 adjustably mounted upon a standard 104, which in turn is adjustably mounted in a bracket 105 secured by suitable means such as bolts 108 to the'adjacent side of the table 2. The type A is reinovably held in the clamp 100 by means of a stationary jaw 109 and a removable jaw 110,'
which latter is held in position againstthe type by set screws 112. The arm 102 has a longitudinal slot 114 so that it may be adjusted backward or forward upon the standard 104 to bring the face of the type in line with the cylindrical articles to be printed, upon, and after-such adjustment said arm 102 is clamped against shoulders `116 upon the standard 104 by means of a plate 118`and a set screw 120, which latter is threaded upon a stud 122 projecting from the top of the standard 104. The bracket 105 has a plate 106 removably held in position by screws 124. By looseningsaid screws 124 the standard 104 may be adjusted vertically toposition the type A at the desired elevation for printing upon the cans or other cylindrical articles. o Inipractice the ink distributing disk 82 is coated with ink and a can or other cylindrical article B is placed'in upright position in the recess 46 of the rotatable carrier 42 where itis rmly held by the spring pressed detent 48. The treadle 20 is then depressed to effect the movement of the reciprocatorycarriage 14 to the right, Fig. 2. As the carriage14travels to the rightthe gear wheel 44 is rotated by the rack 56 and in turn rotates the carrier 42 with the cylindrical article B which is printed upon as it rotates in contact with the type A. When the carriage 14 reaches the end of its movement to the right the cylindrical article B is removed from the rotatable carrier 42, after which the treadle 20 is relieved of sutiicient pressure to permit the counterweiglit 16 to returnthe carriage 14 to its normal position at the left of the table 2, whereupon another cylindrical article to be printed upon is placed in position upon the carrier 42. As the `carriage 14 approaches the end of its movement to the left the arm 98 contacts with the ratchet lever 90 and pushes the same backwardly against the action of the spring 94, thereby causing said ratchet lever 90 to turn the disk 82 one step through the intermediary of the ratchet wheel 88 and cause said disk to distribute ink upon the roller 60 as it rotates in contact therewith.
From the foregoing description it is apparent that we have provided a printing press which is well adapted, for the Apurpose intended and while we have shown one form of theinvention we reserve all rights to suoli other forms and modifications lthereof as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described 4ourA invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: Y p v j n 1. In apress of Vthe character described, a suitablesupport, a reciprocatory member mounted -upon'said support, a horizontally disposed rotatable member mounted upon said recipiocatory member and having a recess in its upper portion for thereception of the lower end of anarticle to be printed upon, coacting means on saidsupportand said rotatable member for rotating vthe lat- 'ter as it is carried to'andfro on the reciprocatory member,l and printing means ar-- ranged in the path lof the article for printing thereon.
2.---In a press ofthe character described, a suitable support, a reciprocatory member mounted upon said support,y a` horizontally disposedrotatable member mounted upon said reciprocatory member and having a recess in its upper portion for/the reception of the lower end of an article to be printed upon, means carried by said rotatable member for holding the article in said recess, coacting means on said support andl said rotatable member forrotating the latter as it is carried to and fro on the reciprocatory member, and printing means arranged in the path ofthe article for printingthereonl 3. In a press ,of the character described, a suitable support, a reciprocatory member mounted upon said support, means` on said reciprocatory member for carrying articles to be printed upon, printing means associat-ed With said Support for printing said articles, clamp means for holding Said printing means, a slotted arm for supporting said printing means, a standard upon which said slotted arm is adjustably mounted, and a bracket on the support in which said standard is adjustably mounted.
4;. In a press of the character described a rotary carrier having a recess for the reception of an article to be printed upon,
means on said carrier for holding said article in said recess, a gear iixed tosaid carrier for rotating the latter, a stationary rack With which said gear intermeshes, and reciprocatory means for moving said carrier back and forth.
5. In a press of the character described a rotary carrier having a recess for the reception of an article to be printed upon, spring pressed means on said carrier for holding said article in said recess, a gear fixed to said carrier for rotating the latter,
a stationary rack With which said gear intermeshes, reciprocatory means for moving said carrier back and forth, and printing means arranged in the path of said article for printing the latter.
