Application August 24, 1932. Serial No. 630,296
1 Claim. (01. 5331) This invention relates to beds and more particularly to side guards or sidings, to be used as attachments for a bed to prevent occupants from rolling out.
The invention further consists in the provision of a novel guard or siding of the character above suggested together with improved means for mounting the guard or siding on the bed in a manner to be readily placed in either an operative or effective position or in an out of the way or inoperative or ineffective position.
A still further very important object of the invention resides in. the provision of improved side members for a bed embodying simplicity of construction, inexpensiveness of manufacture, ease of manipulation and adjustment, and therough effi-ciency and reliability in use.
With the above and numerous other objects in viewas will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the bed showing my improvements incorporated therein. 7
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section therethrough taken substantially on theline 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse section therethrough taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail section taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figures 5 and 6 are plan views of the bracket plates.
Figure '7 is a detail view showing the outer side of one of the guard or siding members, and
Figure 8 is a detail sectional view through one of the rollers on one of the studs Referring to the drawings by reference numerals it will be seen that the invention, as shown, may be readiliy applied to a bed of conventional structure and only such parts of the bed with which the present invention is concerned, will be herein specifically referred to. Thus it will be seen that the numeral 5 indicates the bed posts, the numeral 6 the mattress, and the numeral '7 the spring structure supporting the mattress 6 in the usual manner.
As shown, there are two sidings or guard members S, and each of said sidings or guard members comprises a broad fiat elongated board 12 upholstered on its inner side as at 14. Secured to the board 12 at the ends thereof are plates position and will in no wise detract from the ap- 16; screws or other fastening elements 17 being employed for securing the plates in fixed position on the board 12. Each plate 16 has projecting therefrom beyond the adjacent end edge of the board 12 a stud 15 on which is rotatably mounted, in a suitable manner, a roller 16.
For supporting the sidings or guard members S at relatively opposite sides of the bed there are provided plates 8 suitably mounted on the bed posts 5. Each of the plates 8 is provided with a longitudinal slot 9 that is closed at its lower end and which opens, at its upper end through a side edge of the plate 8 as at 10. The plate 8 is also provided on relatively opposite sides of the slot 9 with pairs of relatively spaced notches 11 inclined in the manner shown and as will be noted the pair of notches on one side of the slot 9 is disposed adjacent the upper end of the slot, while the pair of notches on therelatively opposite side of the slot 9 is disposed adjacent the lower end of the slot.
As will be apparent from a consideration of the drawings the rollers 16 on the ends of the sidings or guard members S operate in the slots 9 of the plates 8 and are engageable with the slots 11 in the manner shown in Figure 6 for supporting the sidings or guard members S in raised or lowered positions relative to the mattress 6 and at an angle to the perpendicular. When the sidings or guard members S are in the raised position suggested by broken lines in Figure 6, they will effectively prevent the occupant of the bed from rolling out; while when said guard members are in a lowered position they are obviously then so located relative to the mattress as to be ineffective for the purpose above stated; and when in this latter position the said sidings or guard members will be in an out of the way been described in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without no departing from the spirit or scope of the invenof the slot and the lower pairs of notches being disposed at a relatively opposite side of the slot, and a siding member provided at the ends thereof with relatively spaced roller equipped studs projecting longitudinally therefrom and engageable with selected notches for supporting the siding member at one side of the bed and at an angle to the perpendicular, when the member is in either raised or lowered position. 1 r
