SAFETY RAZOR Filed Aug. 24, 1931 INVENTOR. l w
BYRID-M ATTORNEY.
latentecl June "27, 1933 WALTER PQGRATH, or LOS ANGELES, CALI-Bosnia SAFETY RAZOR,
Application filed au iist'z'a i931. SeriaI'No. 558,985.
This invention is a safety razor, and has for its object to provide for longitudinallyv adjusting theztran'sverse cutting'edgeflof a blade with relation to a guard, so as to vary projection of the cutting edge in accordance withthe requirements of the individual user.
It is a further object of theinvention to mount the'blade in a holder .which is lon- 1 gitudinally adjustable with relation to the the transverse cutting edgeof thebla'de, with.
the blade readily'removable and reinsertablev without disturbing the longitudinal adjustment of its holder, so thatwith 'the holder locked in adjusted position the transverse cutting. edge of the blade will always have eaf the desired longitudinal adjustment with relation to the guard.
It is a still further object of the inventionv to provide for appreciable longitudinal adjustment of'the blade holder withrelation to the guard, so that blades of appreciably varying width may be mounted in the holder and the latter adjusted to provide the same longitudinal projection of the transverse cutting edge of the blade with relation to the guard. v
Further objects of the inventionwill be readily understood from' the following description of the accompanying drawing, in
which: v I V Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the razor.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the razor, partly in vertical section Fig; 4 is a bottom plan view of the razor with the handle detached.
The razor 's of that type in which a blade 1 having a forward transverse cutting edge 2 is mounted upon a transverse support 3 having longitudinally projecting and transversely spaced guard teeth 4, the blade being shown in the present instance as a hollow-ground blade terminating in a relatively heavy transverse rib 5 at its rear edge, and the support 3 being preferably provided with a boss 6 angularly disposed at its underside and detachably engaged by a usual depending hanso dle 7 so as toincline the handle at the proper guard for varying longitudinal projection of angle with relation to: the blade as shownv in" The transverse cutting edge of the blade is adapted for adjustmentlongitudinallyof the M guard teeth so as to adjust the cutting edge to 'therequirements'of the individual user; and
when the desired adjustment has been ob taine'd the blademay be removed and reinserted while maintaining the desired adjust ment. Y 1
F or this purpose the "blade is mounted'in a blade holder which is slidably mounted on support 3 for adjustment longitudinally of guard teeth 1, the blade'holder being 're'-' w cessed at its upper surface as shown at '9, 6 5
for reception of the blade with its cutting edge projecting appreciably forwardly beyond the holder and its ribbed rear edge impinging against a transverse abutment surface 10 at the rear or" the recess. A spring 7" clip 11 is mounted on the holder so as to overlie the'rear portion of theblade and frio tionally hold it in place in'recess 9; and the blade is thus readily removable and'reinsertable by sliding it transversely along the" recess until clear of or engaged by the over lying spring clip. I The blade holder'may be afdjustably' mounted on support 3 by providing the holder with transversely spaced guide ribs 12 at its underside, with the ribs slidably received in cooperating shouldered slots 13 which extend longitudinally of support 3 from its rear edge; and the blade holder may j 14 threaded onto pins 15 which depend from I the ribs 12 through the slots 13.
The blade holder is adapted for accurate adjustment longitudinally of guard teeth 4 n so as to provide any desired projection of the transverse cutting edge of the blade with relation to the guard; and for, this purpose a bearing 16 may project rearwardly and downwardly from blade holder 8, with a screw 17 journaled in the bearing but fixed against longitudinal displacement relative thereto, and threaded into a bore 18 which extends longitudinally through support 3. The screw may be rotated by a head 19, so that with binding nuts 14 loosened, turning the 106 head 19 provides positive and'aceurate ad justment of blade holder-8 'ineither of opposite directions longitudinally of teeth 4 tion providingany'desired projection of its transverse cuttin guard teeth 4,wit% the grinding nuts'llforming arigid structureof'blade holder '8 and support 3 so that the blade maintains exactly razor-the blade'may be removed and cleaned and the handle 7 may also be removed,with- 1 out I disturbing the adjustment of holder 8,
. so'that when thes'blade is again inserted in i 'pr vi ly the requirementsof the individual user. i e
the holder it .vvill" have the same adjustment determinedin accordance with When the blade has been "ground away, the
holder 8 is longitudinally; adjusted to. -reestablish the desired longitudinal projection ofthe transverse cutting: edge of the blade; with relation to the guard; and by making' slots 13 of appreciable length the 1 holder 8 maybe adjusted so asto operativelyfposition, apprec ably the blade even when ithas. been worn away as a result of repeate grinding. A furt'heradvantage ofth s improved' con struction is theelimination of sto s on, the
curately ad guard; teeth 4 by supporting the lade' ei tirely by the holder" 8; and as a consequence the entire length of cutting edge 2 is withoutobstruction andthus adapted for use,
with the ends of the cutting edge preferably soasto avoid the rounded'oif as shown at 2 possibilityvof accidentally pricking theskin.
The invention thus provides anextremely simple and compact-safety razor-nonstruction, adapted for' convenient use and acments of therindividual user. I claim: i
