Description

Nov. 30 1926.
1,608,789 H. L. GOOD CUTTER Filed Feb. 9, 1926 nomdo',
Patented Nov. 3%, 192%.
HAROLD L. GOOD, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
CUTTER.
Application filed February 9, 1928. Serial No. 87,105.
This invention relates to a cutting attachment for looms designed to cut the cloth material as it passes over the breast beam of the loom to which the attachment is applied.
The important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be held in its operative position by the tension of the cloth material passing from the loom, eliminating all other secur- ,ing means.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cutter wherein the blade may be readily and easily adjusted to bring another portion of the cutting edge within the path of travel of the cloth.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a cutter wherein the blade thereof may be readily and easily removed and replaced by an attendant by sliding the cutter from its position under the cloth, thereby reducing damage to the cloth material in changing a blade, to the minimum.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cutter wherein the blade may be ad justed laterally within its support.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a cutter constructed in accordance with the invention and illustrating the same as positioned on the breast beam of a loom.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 33 of Figure 4:.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the cutter.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 indicates the usual breast beam of a loom over which the cloth material which is indicated at 6 passes.
The body portion of the cutter is indicated generally by the reference character? and is substantially triangular in side elevation, the same being constructed of suitable materialand provided with alongitudinal slot 8 extending along one edge thereof, which slot is formed with an enlarged inner portion 9 to receive the reinforcing strip 10 of the blade 11 that is supported by the body portion.
The slot 8 defines a pair of jaws indicated by the reference character 12, between which the blade is positioned, the space between the jaws being such as topermit the blade to be operated laterally. Set screws 13 extend through the body portion and engage the blade for adjusting the blade laterally and holding the blade against movement, after it has been properly adjusted.
As illustrated by Figure 1, the forward lower edge of the body portion is cut away slightly as at 1a to expose the sharp edge of the cutting blade at this point and per mit the cutting blade to contact with the threads of the cloth to be cut.
Formed in the outer surfaces of the body portion and disposed in parallel relation with the bottom edge thereof are grooves 15 whlch grooves act as guides for the cut edges of the cloth passing from the loom, to the end that a downward pressure will be exerted on the body portion by the cloth passing over the breast beam, holding the body portion in position against the breast beam as shown by Figure 1.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that cutters such as shown and described may be readily positioned on the breast beam of a loom, the number of cutters being arranged according to the width of the cloth material to be out.
It will further be noted that when the blade becomes dull from use, the set screws 13 may be loosened and the blade slid downwardly bringing another point of the cutting edge thereof within the path of travel of the cloth. material, and should it be desired to replace the cutting blade, the screws may be easily loosened and the blade removed, whereupon another cutting blade may be positioned.
I claim:
1. A cloth cutting attachment for looms, including a body portion, said body portion having a slot formed therein, a cutting blade positioned within the slot, set screws extending through the body portion and engaging the blade to adjustably secure the blade within the slot, said body portion adapted to rest against the breast beam of a loom and Within the path of travel of the cloth material passing from the loom, and said body portion adapted to be held in position by the tension of the cloth material.
2. A cloth cutting; attachment for looms including a body portion, said body portion having a slot formed therein, said slot having an enlarged portion at the base thereof, a blade adapted to be positioned Within the slot, said body portion having threaded openings, set screws arranged within the threaded openings, and adapted to engage the blade to adjustably support the blade Within the body portion, said body portion adapted to rest against the breast beam of a 100m, and said body portion having grooves to accommodate portions of the cloth material passing from the loom to hold the body portion to the breast beam of the loom by the tension of the cloth material.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aiiixed any sigma tnre.
HAROLD L. GOOD.
