Description
March 7; '1933. A FELDER LQOl LOOSE LEAF BOOK Filed May 19, 1952 me/who@ Patented Mar. 7, 1933 Parent,"
ABRAHAM FELDER, or NEW YORK, N. Y.v
. LoosE LEAF BooK Application led May 19,
This invention relates to loose leaf books and has special reference to leaf-holding means for such books.l
One important object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved quickacting leaf-holding means for loose leaf books.
A second important object of the invention is to provide a novel leaf-holding means of the snap button type for such books.
A third important object of the invention is to provide a snap button arrangement for holding the leaves of loose leaf books wherein the plunger or button part of the device has its stem formed as an elongated cylinder to accommodate a number of leaves.
A fourth important obj ect of the invention is to provide a novel arrangement of snap button parts in such a book whereby the effective. length of the button shank may be varied to suit different numbers of leaves.
With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawing like characters of reference indicate like parts in the V several views, and:
Figure 1 is a face view of the front cover of a. side opening loose leaf book constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail section on the line 2-2 of Figurel.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing a modification of the device.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 1 but showing an end-opening book.
In the embodiments of the invention the leaf holders are shown as used in connection with a book having its frontcover 10 and rear cover 11 formed of a single piece of flexible material such as leather, imitation leather or any other material commonly used for like 1932.V serial No. 612,317.
purposes, the invention notbeing restricted tothe use of any specific vvmaterial or Inaterials forV the cover. j
l'Io the front cover is secured two or .more snap button sockets which, in the form shown in Figure 2, may be of any ordinary construe# tion.' As here shown, each socket consists of an inner member having a hollow bodyA l2 opening towards the rear cover through a constricted neck portion and this open end is provided with a flange A18 which lies against Y the inner face of the front cover. The body Y' 12 projects through the cover and a cap lllis swedgedthereon .to form a hollow riveton the outer face of the frontcover and thus hold 60. l
thesocketsecurely inposition. In this form of the inventionthe plunger or butto-n member has an elongated shank 15 of smoothly cylindrical form. `At one end of the shank there is provided a head 16 of substantially 65 the saine diameter as the shank and defined from said shank by `a constricted neck 17. The head isislightly larger than theopening Y y inthe socket, the latterbeing preferably split l in the usual manner to allow the'head to'enter 70 andh'e held bythe elasticity of said socket. The button member is hollow, being'preferably formed from Vstamped sheet metal and at its remaining' end is provided with a flange 18 which rests against the inner face of the 75 back coverandthrough this cover extends the shank of a rivet 19 which holds the'button member firmly lin place. The leaves 20 are held on the shank 15 and, when the head `16 is inserted in thesocket 12, lthe Vleaves are secured'in -such mannervthat onlyby forcing the button head from the socket can the parts y be separated andthe leaves removed.
In the formshown in VFigure Sthe Vsocket proper and the button member are somewhat different. In this form the socket body 21 is elongate-Gland Vis provided adjacent the closed end with a peripherally grooved portion22 jfor engagementbythe edge of the hollow rivetV 14 whichis identical withV the 90 like part of Figure 2. This socket is also provided with a rebent portion 23 provided with a flange 24. The button member in this form has a cylindrical shank 25 provided with a plurality of heads 26 separated from each other and from the shank by grooves 27. As in the first form, the shank 25 is provided with a flange 28 and is hel-d to the cover 11 by a rivet 29. In this form the covers l0 and 11 are adjusted in spaced relation by pushing the button member into the socket so that one or more of the heads lie in the socket. Thus the active length of the button shank can be adj usted to accommodate a greater or lesser number of leaves as may be desired.
There has thus been provided a simple and eiiicient device of the kind described and vfor the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but itis desired to includeall such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what isclaimed as new, is:
l. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a pair of book covers, of snap button sockets carried by one of said covers, and coacting button members having elongated shanks carried by the other cover, said shanks being of sufficient length to extend through and hold a package of' loose leaves, said shanks each having a head of substantially the'same diameter as the shank and being provided with a reduced neck between the head and shank, said shank having a second reduced neck spaced from the first neck whereby to form a shank portion constituting a second head, said sockets and coaeting button members each having a flangeV formed therey on and resting against the inner surface ofl the respective cover to constitute spacing means between the covers and the leaves bound therein.
2. Ina device of the kind described, the
combination with a pair of book covers, of
snap button sockets carried by one of said covers, and coacting button members having elongated shanks carried by the other cover, said Shanks being of sufficient length to eX- tend through and hold a package of loose leaves, each of said shanks being provided at one end with a. plurality of heads defined from each other and the shank by grooves and the socket being elongated to accommodate the plurality of heads whereby a selected number of said heads may be engaged in the socket.
3. A snap fastener comprising a button part and a socket part having a constricted mouth, said button part being provided with a shank having spaced reduced portions adapted to be selectively engaged in the mouth of the socket part.
4. A snap fastener comprising a button part and a socket part having a constricted mouth, said button part being provided with a shank having spaced reduced portions adapted to be selectively engaged in the mouth of the socket part, said shank having a rounded extremity and the remainder of the shank except for the reduced necks being of uniform diameter. i
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
