The foregoing `and other important features and advantages of our present improvements will be more fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawing wherein like reference characters are applied tothe corresponding parts -45 in the several views.

Associated with this conventional arrangement,4 there" is provided a pressure feed lubricatingT device ofthe mechanically actuatedtype indicated at 10l and'prov'ided With-a movable actuating arm 12 mounted' upon an actuator shaft 13. The delivery `port of the lubricator 10 is connected by tube or pipe 14 tothe steam line 5 Vand is provided with a check valve 15 adjustable'toregulate the feed of the oil as required for Aproper lubrication.
The simplied and improved'm'eans for operatingthe lubricating device, as shown, comprises a connector member c composed of ring segments 1-5--16 fitted upon the piston rod'3 to have fric-4 tional securing engagement therewith', onelofthe segments having an armbextension 18! connected by a; link 19 to the actuating arm 12 of Athe oil' feed device 10 by means of`pivot-conne`ctions 20-21 as shown. The-ring segments, as illustrate'd, arev formed with radiall extensionsor ears which are. formed with'` apertures to 4receive the clamping' bolts `22 loosely iittedwtherein and-pro` vided with washers- 23 and nuts 24 threaded on the boltsvto adjust the tension of coil springs 25 interposed between the ear portions and the Washers to eXer-t a constant pressure of the ring upon the piston rod. In accordance with a further feature of the invention, the connector ring member has ttedtherein the vcustomarily employed swab 26 which may be of cotton fabric, impregnated with lubricating grease for lubrication of the piston rod.
In operation, as will be readily understood, the frictional grip of the connector on the piston rod is suflicient to effect the actuation of the arm 12 of the lubricator to fee'd the lubricant. As the stroke of the piston rod is greater than the allowable distance of travel of the connector, as determinedby the spacing of the lower gland 27 of the steam cylinder and the gland 28 of the pump cylinder, the frictional grip of the connector will be slipped at the end of its stroke in each direction upon its engagement with the glands.

As will be appreciated, any suitable mechanical feed lubricating device may be employed, there being here shown a simplified form consisting of a block 30 positioned within the lubricator casing and having a vertical bore 31 to receive the feed plunger 32. Communicating with the bore 31 is an oil intake port 34 an'd out duct 35 having a vertical discharge duct 36 connected therewith and provided with a seat for a ball check 37. The oil feed pipe is connected to the discharge duct as shown. For operating the feed plunger 32, the actuating shaft is formed with an eccentric portion 38 upon which is fitted a collar 39 connected by pivotal link 40 to the plunger 32 whereby upon oscillation of the actuator shaft 13 the plunger will reciprocate vertically with a short stroke, sufficient to entrap and feed a minute quantity of oil at each stroke.
While a single feed from the lubricant feed device is shown, it will be understood that a multiple feed device may be similarly operated for lubricating other parts, such as the cylinders of compound air compressor arrangements, Aboth steam and air. Likewise, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, a flexible connection 42 vmay be provided from the feed device to the connector ring for delivering oil tothe vswab for the automatic lubrication thereof.
While we have shown and described an approved embodiment of the features of our improvements it will be understood that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having described our invention, we claim:
, 1. A lubricating device for air pump mechanisms of locomotives having in combination with the fluid operating motor, air pump and piston rod associated therewith, a lubricant feed device provided with an actuator shaft and an arm for moving said shaft, operating means therefor comprising a connector member slidably fitted to the piston rod to be movable therewith for part of the piston rod stroke and connections from said connector member to the arm to transmit motion thereto to actuate the feed device.

A lubricating device for air pump mechanisms of locomotives having in combination with the fluid operating motor, air pump and piston rod associated therewith, a lubricant feed device provided with an actuator shaft and an arm for moving said shaft, operating means therefor comprising a connectorv member fitted to the piston rod to have slidable frictional engagement therewith, connections from said connector member to the arm to transmit motion thereto to actuate the feed device and saidV connector including a swab positioned in engagement with the rod, substantially as described.
3. A lubricating device for air pump mechanisms of locomotives having in combination with the fluid operating motor, air pump and piston rod associated therewith, a lubricant feed device provided with an actuator shaft and an arm for moving said shaft, operating means therefor comprising a connector member composed of ring segments fitted to surround the piston rod, means for resiliently clamping the segments to the rod and ,connections from the connector member to the arm to transmit motion from the piston rod -theretof Y 4. A lubricating device for air pump mechaynismsy of locomotives having in combination with the fluid operating motor, air pump and piston rod associated therewith, a lubricant feed device provided with an actuator shaft and an arm for moving said shaft, 4operating means therefor comprising a connector member composed of ring segments fitted to surround the piston rod, a swab interposed between the segments and the rod, said ring segments having perforated ear p0rtions, clamping b olts fitted within the perforations, nuts threaded to said bolts with springs interposed between the segment and the nutsfand connections from the connector member to the arm to transmit motion` from theL piston rod thereto.
5. A lubricating device for air pump mechanisms of locomotives having in combination with the fluid operating motor, air pump and piston rod associated therewith, a lubricant feed device provided with an actuator shaft and an arm for moving said shaft, operating means therefor comprising a connector member composed of ring segments fitted to surround the piston rod, one of said segments having an arm extension, a swab interposed between the segments and the rod, means for resiliently clamping the segments into frictional engagement with the piston rod, con.-V nections from the `segment extensionkarm to the actuator arm to transmit motion from the piston rod thereto and a lubricant feed pipe from the feed device to the fiuid intake of the operating motor, substantially as described.
