LUBRICATING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD R. BALE-s, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Centralia, in the county of Marion and State of Illinois, have invented anew and Improved Lubricating Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 7
This invention relates to a device for lubricating the air cylinders of a two-stage air compressor and is primarily design-ed for use with air compressors used on locomotives.
The object of this invention is to provide a reliable and efficient lubricator for the cylinders of an air compressor that may be fed from some convenient place for filling an oil cup.
A further object is to introduce a lubricator having an oil cup with a restricted feed opening therein which checks the flow of the oil and prevents an over supply of oil by a careless operator.
These objects are accomplished by providing in conjunction with the cylinders of an air compressor a pipe line which extends compressor. A pipe line 12 is connected to the high pressure cylinder 10. This pipe line 12 extends from the compressor to a convenientplace for feeding the oil. For instance, in the case of a compressor used with a locomotive, the pipeline would eX- tend into the cab of the locomotive. Mounted on the upper end of the pipe line is a cup 16 which has a hole 17 drilled in the bottom.
The bottom of the oil cup around the drilled 1 hole is beveled so that the oil in passing through the hole 17 will not run along the sides but will drop into the pipe. In the pipe 12 just below its junction with the oil cup 16 perforations 18 are drilled. Located in the pipe line near the high pressure cylin vde'r are two check valves 13 andl l and a T 15, which is vertically positioned between Connected to the T- 15 the check valves. 1s a pipe 19 extending for some distance at or nearly at rightangles and leading into the low pressure cylinder 11; This T, as will be seen from the description of'the operation of the device, acts something like a divider for the oil..
The'operation of the device is as follows: Oilis fed into the cup 16 which prevents an excessive amount being fed to the cylinders. The oil passes through the hole 17 and drops into the pipe 12, and on the suctionstroke of the low pressure cylinder 11 it is drawn through the check valve lland 1 passes onto the T 15. of the oil will drop through the T 15 while the finer particles will be drawn into pipe 19 with the air which is drawn in through perforations 18 in the pipe line. The oil, which is drawn into pipe 19 in a more or less atoinized state, passes into the low pressure cylinder 11. On the pressure stroke'of the piston in thelow pressurecylinder 11 air will be forced through pipe 19, pipe 12 and The heavier particles check valve 13, carrying with it the oil that has dropped through T 15. The forcing of the oil through the curved pipe line and the check valve breaks it up into an atomized state and in this state it is conveyed into the high pressure cylinder 10 The check valve 14 prevents the flow of air in the direction of the oil cup during the pressurestrolre of the piston in the low pressure cylinder 11,

A lubricating system for two-stage air 7 compressor cylinders, comprising an oilcup, a branched plpe llne connecting the Oll cup 'with the cylinders, a check valve located between the oil cup and the low pressure cylinder near the latter, a second check valve Y located between the high pressure cylinder v and the low pressure cylinder, the. pipe line between said check valves being vertical so that gravity assists in feeding the oil toward the check valve next the high-pressure cylinder, and a- T in vertical position connecting.
