Claims.

The invention relates to an adjustable tray for use with typewriters so that envelopes, cards and the like can be supported upright and located in the most accessible position.

An object of the invention is to provide a card and envelope supporting tray which can be adjusted vertically as well as horizontally and which can be swung out of position when not in use. The spaced uprights for holding the cards and adjustable so that the capacity of the tray can be varied within limits.

A further object is to provide a device for the purposes described which will be independent of envelope supporting the typewriter and which can be located in the most accessible position when in use, allowing folding of the typewriter desk by merely setting the device to one side out of the way.

With these and various other objects in view, the invention may consist of certain novel features of construction and operation, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed outl in the specification, drawing and claims appended hereto.

In the drawing which illustrates an embodiment of thedevice and wherein like reference characters are used to designate like parts- Figure 1 is an elevational view of the card and tray with the base of the standard being shown in section;

Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the device;

Figure 3 is a plan view of the device showing the constructional features by which the tray is adjustable for size and adjustably secured to its support;

Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3; and

Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Figure 3;

Referring to Figures 1 to 5 inclusive the supporting tray of the present invention is shown as including a standard 10 having a base 11 provided with a recessed portion 12 in its upper surface for receiving clips, pins, etc., the standard positioning vertically in adjusted position, by means of the collar 13, a horizontal member forming the support 14 having side frame members 15 which taper toward each other at one end for retaining the spool 16 serving to rotatably mount the support on the standard 10. The upper surface of the support has a member 17 provided with upstanding marginal flanges either formed integrally with the members 15, as shown, or suitably Welded to the members, the trough-shaped member extending throughout the length of the support, terminating, however, short of where the sides taper as described. Adjustably secured to the support is a tray in the form of a plate member 20 having a contour such as to provide a rec- 60 tangular foremost portion and a triangular rear portion, as more particularly shown in Figure 3. The plate at the front edges of the rectangular portion is provided with uprights 2l located on the respective sides of the longitudinal center of the plate, which uprights have associated therewitha spaced upright 22 formed integrally with a backing member 23 adjustably positioned on the plate.

For attaching plate member 20 to the support so that the same is adjustablefwith respect to the support the plate is provided with a central depressed portion 24 extending and forming a groove longitudinally of the plate. The plate and support are assembled with the recessed portion iitting within the member 17 and thus the parts are retained'l in assembled relation, permitting the plate, however, `to slide longitudinally on the sup,- port. A slot 25 is located in the depressed .portion tothe rear of the plate for receiving the securing screw 26 which passes through anopening. in member `17 ofthe support and ,retained therein by the lockingl nut 427. The plate member has movement on the support to the extent permitted by the length of the slot 25 and by tightening the nut 27 the parts can be iirmly secured in desired position. The foremost portion of the groove 24 in the plate has located therein a metal bar 30 secured at its rear end to a support 31, the ends of which are welded to the edges of the groove, Figure 4, and at its other end to the bend section 32 of the groove, which section is bent diagonally and then horizontally so that the bar is positioned with its entire upper surface substantially iiush with the surface of the plate 20. The backing member 23 is provided with a rec- 95 tangular slot in alignment with the bar so that a clip 33 secures the member to the bar, the clip having U-formation and extending under the bar with its ends passing out of the slot and being i riveted to the upper surface of the member.

A slot 34, formed in the rear portion of the bar, receives a screw 35 threaded and extending upwardly from the clip 33 so that the movement of the backing member and upright 22 toward and from the front uprights 21 is limited. The locking nut 36 on screw 35 can be tightened to retain the backing member in desired position so that the capacity of the tray can be adjusted to suit conditions.

The supporting tray of the present invention is adjustable horizontallyon the portion 17 of the horizontal support which is adjustable vertically on the standard 10 so that the desind position of the envelopes or cards held in upright position by the uprights 21 and 23 can be secured. Alsothe base l1 provides a receptacle for pins, clips and similar articles. If the typewriter desk is of the folding type and it is desired to close the same for the day or to for other purposes, it is only necessary to swing the support 14 `to locate the tray out yof :the Way or since Vthe device is independent of the rear of the desk.

It is to be understood that not limitation, as various and other'forms of the device Will of course be apparent to those-skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
