Description

Patented Oct. 2, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT orricE 1,975,328 HAIR SHAPING ATTACHMENT Arthur Hllare Madore, Los'Angeles, Calif. Y Application February '1, 1933,'seria1 No. 655,587
V claims. (o1. en -12,)
My invention relates to an attachment for hair combs and the principal object of my invention is, to provide av relatively simple, practical and inexpensive device that may be conveniently ap- 5 plied to or removed from an ordinary hair comb and which device when properly positioned upon the comb may be conveniently rused for effectively cutting, shaping and thinning the hair so that the same will conform to the shape of the lohead.
A further object of my invention is, to provide a hair cutting attachment for combs that utilizes as the cutting element, the standard forms of thin flexible double edged razor blades that are readily obtainable in the open market.
With the foregoing and other objects in View,
`my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangements of parts that will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which: I l
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a comb and showing my improved cutting attachment inv position thereupon.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the reverse side of the comb and showing the means utilized for clamping the cutting attachment to the comb.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a plate that forms the main body of vthe attachment and which plate receives and holds the razor blades.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is an elevational View of a clamping plate that is positioned on the opposite side of the comb from the razor blade receiving and holding plate.
Fig. 6 is an elevational view-of a conventional form of razor blade that may be used in my improved hair cutting attachment.Y l, a
Fig. 7 is a perspective View of a modified form of the plate that receives the razor blades.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the parts that are detachably applied to the form of plate illustrated in Fig. 7 for the purpose of receiving the razor blades.
Fig. 9 is a perspective View of a further modified form of the razor blade receiving and holding plate.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing and particularly to the construction il- `5'0 lustrated in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, 10 designates a thin plate, preferably of metal, having a slightly rounded or convex outer face and a flat inner face and the width of which plate is slightly less than the length of the teeth of the comb t0 Which the attachment is applied.
Formed integral with the ends of this plate v` and on the flat inner face thereof aretransverse ribs l1 and projecting inwardly from said ribs on the flat face of the plate are short lugs 12 that are adapted-to enter the notches in the ends of standardl 'forms of thin double-edged razor blades of the type illustrated in Fig. 6.
The thickness of the ribs 11 and lugs 12 is apl2 and the center lug 13, are short narrow posts 14 and 15 and formedY through the upper portion of post 14, is an aperture, 16 and formed in the upper portion of post 16 is an undercut notch 17. i Y
A thin plate 18, preferably of metal, is adapted Vt0 be positioned on the side of the combopposite I from the side on whichv the blade carrying plate 10 is positioned andformed in the ends of plate 18 are notches 19 for the reception of those portions of the posts 14 and 15 that project beyond the teeth of the comb to which the attachment is applied. Y
A clamping member 20, preferably formed of metal, is provided at its ends with pintles 21 AwhichY when `said clamp is applied for use, engage in the aperture 16 land notch 17 andi the upper'portion of said clampingmember .is curved to one side to forma hook 22 thatengages over the upper edge of the comb to'which the'attach- Vment is applied.
- The comb to .which the 'attachment is applied may be an ordinary metal comb or a comb of hard rubber, Celluloid or the like that is plated with metal by any one of the standard metal coating methods now practiced and to apply the attachment to the comb a pair of thin ilexible razor blades of the type illustrated in Fig. 6 are positioned on the fiat face of plate 10 with the lugs 12 and 13 engaging in the notches in the ends of said blades.
The posts 14 and 15 project through the apertures in the centers of the blades and as said lugs and posts are located closer to one edge of the plate 10 than the other, the blades will be held on said plate with one cutting edge exposed i and the opposite cutting edge inset from the adjacent edge of said plate. v
The plate carrying the blades is now applied to one side of the comb, preferably that portion 5 having the larger teeth with the posts 14 and can One of the pintles 21 on clamping l'plate 20 is Y now inserted through aperture 16 in post'14 and the other pintle is now engaged in the undercut notch 17.
The clamping plate is now swung upwardly Yso that the hook'22 engages over the back of the comb as illustrated in Figs. 2 Yand 4 and thus the attachment is clamped to the comb with the exposed cutting edges of the razor'blades positioned a short distance above the points of the teeth, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4.
The comb with the attachment may now be used for cutting, shaping and thinning the hair either by running that portion of the ncomb carrying the attachment downwardly over the surface of the hair fromY the top of the head or by lifting part o the hair and running the comb through the underlying lhair or between layers thereof, thus thinning and tapering the hair so as to make the-same movement with the shape of the head.Y Irfthe modification illustrated in Figs. '7 and 8, 4a thin metal plate 23 has its upper and lower `edges bent outwardly and thence toward each other to form retaining lipsl or flanges 24 and adjustably mounted on the plate with their ends arranged beneath said Aflanges, areithree plates 25, 26 and 27.
Plates 25 and 26carry posts 28., one of which is 'provided with an aperture 29 and the other with an undercut notch 30, which aperture and notch'provide bearings for Ythe pintles on the ends of the clamping plate.
Plate 27, which is positioned between plates 25 and 26, is provided on its outer face with a lug 31that engages in the notches in the inner ends Vof the razor blades that are applied to the holder.
In themodiiied construction `illustrated in Fig.V
9, a plate 32, similar to the plate 10 has' secured lto the central portion of its lat face a lon-gitudinally-disposed metal strap 33, the ends of which nare bent outwardly at right angles to form posts 34. One of these posts is provided witlr a pintle receiving aperture 35 and the other post with an `undercut pintle receiving notch 36. v
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a hair `cutting attachment for combs that is relatively simple in construction, inexpensive of manufac- Yture and very eiective in performing the functions for which it is intended.
It will be understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved hair cutting and shaping attachment for combs may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the Spirit of the invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
