This invention relates to devices for sharpening safety razor blades.
It has been found that if the edge of a safetyrazor blade is rubbed on a glass, china or similar hard surface it is sharpened, and

A plate may be used instead of the wire guard 5.
The wire guard 5 may be provided with a rubber or other suitable covering, such as rubber tubing.
The depth of the projection 14 on the plate 1 may be such that, instead of limiting the bending of the blade, it may provide means for rocking the device during operation so that only the trailing edge of the blade is in contact with the tumbler.
The device may be constructed of metal, bone, celluloid, or other suitable material, or combination of materials.
The hook 12 may be lined with vulcanite or other suitable material 16 to provide a bearing surface for engaging the edge of the tumbler.
In the form illustrated in Figs. 4 to l2,the clam'pcomprises two plates 17, 18 hinged together at 19, the blade 2 being adapted to be disposed between them. One or both plates 17 and 18 may have projections 35 adapted to engage the holes 4 in the blade 2, whilst the other plate or plates may have co-acting recesses or depressions 36. The free end ofone plate 17 is formed with a longitudinal screw-threaded arm 20, whilst the free end of the other plate 18 is formed arcuately as at 21 so as to embrace part of the arm 20 on the plate 17.
The ends of the plates are adapted to be passed through a hole 22 in a transverse plate member 23 and secured thereto by a nut 24, spring, or clip engaging the screw-threaded arm 20. The transverse plate member 23 is preferably constructed of vulcanite or other suitable material.
A substantially rectangular wire guard and stay member 25 is also hinged at one end to the hinged ends 19 of the clamp plates 17 and 18, the other end 26 being adapted to be passed over one end 27 of the transverse plate member 23, the sides 28 of the stay member- 25 at or near to said end 26 of the stay member lying in slots 29, grooves, or recesses in the end of the plate member 23, so that the whole device is made rigid.
The blade 2, plates 17 and 18, and stay member 25 are suspended in a tumbler by means of the transverse plate member 23 which rests horizontally on the edge of the tumbler. the dimensions of the plate23 being such that the plate may slide on the edge of the tumbler to allow the blade to contact with the inner surface of the tumbler.
A finger is passed through the stay member 25 on to the plate 18 so that the blade 2 is pressed on to the surface of the tumbler, and back and forward motions of the device will sharpen the blade.
The component members of the device may be formed so as to be closely packed together the other side to clamp all the parts together.
The free end 26 of the wire guard 25 may be cranked or bent at 34 so as to engage the screw arm 20 of the clamp plate 17 when folded together.
It may be found to be more effective to warm the tumbler beforeuse, by immersing it in hot water, by breathing into it, or otherwise suitably, or the tumbler may be daubed with soap lather.
Furthermore the usual head and comb guard of a safety razor may be attached to the device in its closed position. For eX- ample, they may be laidon one side of the plate member 23, the usual central threaded pin on the razor head being passed through the members instead of the bolt 32 and secured by a nut.
A ferrule may be provided to engage the threaded pin on the razor head and the threaded arm 20 on the clamp plate 17, so that the clamp plates 17 and 18 may be utilized as the handle of the razor.
The device may be used for sharpening any type. of safety razor blade, by suitably modifying the construction thereof. For exa1'nple,the clamping plates may be provided with ribs and/or slots adapted to engage slots and/or ribs on the blades, so as to clamp said blades when they are provided with said slots and/or ribs.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A blade holder for use in sharpening orificed safety razor blades, wherein the blade is clamped between two plates hinged together at one end, projections on said plates to engage holes in the blade, the ends of the plates being passed through a hole in a transverse orificed plate disposed substantially at right angles to the clamp plates and rigidly secured thereto by means engaging the end of one of the plates, and a wire guard and stay member hinged at one end to the hinged ends of the clamp plates, the other end being passed over one end of the transverse plate, the sides of the stay member reposing in recesses in the transverse plate.
2. A blade holder for use in sharpening orificed safety razor blades, wherein the blade is clamped between two plates hinged together at one end, projections on said plates engage holes in the blade, the ends of the plates being passed through a hole in a trans verse orificed plate disposed substantially at right angles to the clamp plates and rigidly secured thereto by means engaging the end of one of the plates, a wire guard and stay member is hinged at one end to the hinged ends of the clamp plates, the other end being passed over one end of the transverse plate, the sides of the stay member reposing in recesses in the tranverse plate, and the transverse plate being provided with a recess on i one side to receive the blade and with a recess on the other side to receive the clamp plates and stay member folded together in the inoperative position, a bolt being passed through the members and secured by a nut to hold the members compactly together.
3. A blade holder for use in sharpening orificed safety razor blades, having two retaining members hinged together at one end, forming a clamp for gripping the blade, hooked means for hooking the apparatus to a curved sharpening member, and a projection on the clamp .for limiting the angular position of the blade during sharpening.
4. A blade holder for use in sharpening orificed safety razor blades, having two retaining plates hinged together at one end, forming a clamp for gripping the blade,
hooked means for hooking the apparatus to a curved sharpening member, and apro'jection on the clamp for limiting the angular position of the blade during sharpening.
