Said lamps are mounted on lamp supporting devices secured toA caps worn by these men. The lamps are provided with i5.; suspension hooks and engage ordinarily in a perforationY in thetop'of the lamp-carrying device of the cap..u In some instances the last mentioned device is equipped with a socket to receive/theY nose portion of the suspension hookof the lamp wiand serves to hold the latter against swingingV relatively to said device, but in instances'where said socket is not employed, the lamp is provided withaxflexible cross-bar below the hook which isequipped with ogee curved end portions which 1'5gare sprung over the side-edges of the vertical -`lamp wears a cap equipped Withthe lamp-carry-l land shipped to the dealer with the lamp; the purpose being to make itY easy for the miner to detach the clamp in the event that the cap Worn by him is equipped with the last-mentioned socket to receive the nose of the suspension hook of the lamp. The advantage of this detachable clamp lies in the fact that it may be removed without distorting or perforating the wall of the water chamber of the lamp to which the cross-bar aforesaid has heretofore been soldered.
Heretofore, the said cross-bar has been made of a flat strip of spring brass and in soldering said strip to the wall of the water chamber of the lamp, the portion of said strip heated by the soldering iron lost its temper and became weak, so that in many instances one end portion of said cross-bar was broken away in the ordinary use of the lamp. The detachable clamp of the present invention is made of ordinary hard brass wire which is not only cheap, but also is stronger than the at strip of metal heretofore used and accordingly, the clamp of the present invention is far more durable and eincent than the said cross-bars heretofore employed.

In said drawing, the water tank (1) of the lamp is shown as equipped on its rear wall with a flat sheet metal plate (2) provided adjacent its lower end with a pair of side iianges (3) bent inwardly toward each other to provide a pair of opposed recesses along the side edges oi said plate (2), said flanges (3) being provided along their free edges with outwardly projecting lips (4), the mouths of said opposed recesses being slightlyv narrower than the inner portions of said recesses.
The suspension hook (5) of the lamp is composed of wire which is suitably secured to the upper end portion of the strip (2) and is adapted to engage in a perforation in the upper portion of flange (6) of the lamp-carrying device of the miners cap ('7). The said device is composed of flat sheet metal and is of a width shown in Fig. 2, substantially equal to the largest lateral dimension of the lamp.
By reference to Figs. 1 and 6,*it will be noted that the other end of the hook (5) is spaced from the water tank (l) of the lamp and thus provides a recess (8) in which the middle portion (9) of the clamp of this invention is adapted to be received.
The said clamp comprises a single piece of wire having a U-shaped middle portion comprising said portion (9) and a pair of arms (10) the terminal portion (11) of which extends laterally outwardly as shown in Figs. 2 and 4 and are proe'nl-arged j sdf vided at their extremities with substantially ogee curved projections (12) 'I'he said arms (10) of said clamp normally diverge from each other and are contracted to the position shown in Fig. 4 when engaged in the recesses formed by the flanges (3) of the plate (2). In mounting said clamp on the lamp, the portion 9) is first passed into the recess (8) and the arms (l0) are then forced toward each other so that their lower end portions may pass between the said flanges (3) of the plate (2). When so disposed said arms (10) are forcibly spreadv apart and these spring into the recesses formed by the flanges (3) and said clamp is then mounted rigidly upon the lamp.
In mounting the lamp on the supporting device of the miners cap ('7), the terminal portion (12) of the clamp may be rst sprung over the side edges of the device (6) at a point suiiciently high to bring the terminal of the hook (5) above and in alignment with the perforation into which it is to be passed, and the lamp then moved downwardly relatively to the device (6) until it has obtained the position shown in Figs. 1 and 6 or, the hook may be first inserted into said perforation and the terminal portion or projection (l2) then sprung over the side edges of the device (6).
Obviously, the said clamp is easily detached from the lamp in the event that it is not required.
The structure shown in Fig. 6 does not differ from that shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, except as to the shape of the Water tank (13) of the lamp.
I claim as my invention:-
1. Means for detachably securing a miners lamp, equipped with a suspension hook to a conventional miners cap equipped with a ilat front plate and a perforation arranged at the top of ysaid plate to receive the said suspension hook, comprising a pair of opposed socket members mounted upon the back of the lamp body below said hook, and a flexible metal member comprising an inverted U-shaped middle portion suspended from a portion of said suspension hook, and having the lower end portions thereof engaged in the said socket formations whereby said member is engaged at three points with the lamp, and divergent arms at the lower end of said middle portion equipped with terminal flexible projections adapted to be sprung over and into engagement with the side edges of the said plate, said projections cooperating with said hook to provide a three-point engagement of the lamp with said plate to hold the lamp iirmly engaged with the cap.
2. Means for detachably securing a miners lamp equipped with a suspension hook to a conventional miners cap'equipped with a flat front plate and a perforation arranged at the top of said plate to receive the said suspension hook, comprising a pair of Vopposed socketl members mounted upon the back of the lamp body below said hook, and a flexible metal member comprising an inverted U-shaped middle portion suspended from a portion 4of said suspension hook 100 and having the lower end portions thereof en gaged in the said socket formations whereby said member is engaged at three points with the lamp, and divergent arms vat the lower end of said middle portion equipped with terminal flexible pro- 105 jections adapted to be sprung over and into engagement with the side edges of the said plate, said projections cooperating with said hook to provide a three-point engagement vof the lamp with said plate to hold the lamp rmly engaged 110 with the cap, said arms so spaced from the upper end of the said middle portion. as to engage the lower ends of said socket members `and prevent longitudinal movement of said member relatively to the lamp.
