WRINGER FEEDING MECHANISM Fi1ed0ct. 26. 1929 INVENTOR.

Patented May 29, 1934 Umrso srA'rss" 1,960,755 I I WRINGER FEEDING MECHANISM Ernest J. Schuda, Erie, Pa., assignor to Lovell Manufacturing Company, Erie, Pa., 2. corporation of Pennsylvania Application October 26,
6 Claims.
This invention is designed to supply wringers, particularly power wringers with a clothes feeding device. Power wringers present an element of danger in that the operators in feeding the clothes to the wringer sometimes have their hands caught between the rolls resulting in injury. This danger also leads in many instances to an improper feeding of the material to the rolls. With the present invention, the material is fed directly to the rolls and, therefore, avoids this danger and assures a more uniform feeding of the material. Features and details of the invention will appear from the specification and claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention Is illustrated in the accompanying drawing as follows:-
Fig. 1 shows a front elevation of the wringer.
Fig. 2 an end elevation, partly broken away.
Fig. 3 a detached view of one of the support for the feeding device.
Fig. 4 a section on the lines 44 in Figs. 2 and 3.
The frame of the wringer is made up of the base 1, side stiles 2, the top bar 3. The lower roll 4 and upper rolls 5 are of the usual structure provided with the central pins 4a and 5a surrounded by the usual cushion of rubber. These rolls are mounted in the side stiles and are driven in the usual manner. Pressure is put on the rolls by springs 6 which are adjusted by the adjusting means '7. Side guards 8 are provided at the ends of the rolls. All of these features are, or may be, of common construction.
The side guards have flanges 9 at each side of the roll and this flange is provided with a slot 10 in which is struck up a pintle 11.
A feeding device mounting 12 has the side arms 13 of resilient metal. These side arms are perforated at 14. By springing in the arms 13 the ends of the arms may be inserted in the slots 10 of the guards and the perforations snapped over the pintles 11, the yielding pressure of the arms maintaining the engagement. Thus the mounting is pivotally secured through the guards on the frame.
A driving roll 15 has pintles 16 which extend into openings 17 in the mounting 12. This driving roll operates frictionally against the lower roll of the wringer and is subjected to the weight of the feeding device and whatever clothes there may be in maintaining the driving engagement. The driving roll is preferably formed of wood and may be slightly larger at the ends than through the central portion so that the driving engagement is confined to the end of the wringer roll 1929, Serial No. 402,598
where the wear on the roll is negligible and the cut-away portion at the center permits of a more ready drainage of water from the roll.
A feeding roll 19 has pintles 20 which extend through slots 21 in the side walls, or arms 13 of the mounting 12. This feeding roll 19 rests upon the driving roll 15 and is frictionally driven by the driving roll. A second feeding roll 22 has pintles 23 which are slidingly mounted in slots 24.- of the arms 13. This roll also rests upon and is driven from the driving roll 15. It will be noted that with a rotation of the lower roll drawing the material into the bite of the rolls that the driving roll 15 is driven in a reverse direction whereas the feeding rolls are driven in the same direction as the lower wringer roll, and therefore present upper traveling surfaces which carry and feed the material into the rolls. Preferably the upper surface of the feeding roll 19 is slightly above the bite of the rolls. This takes care of the natural sag of the material between the feeding roll and the bite, but it also tends to form a guard in front of the bite so as to more surely prevent accident. In the operation of the wringer it sometimes happens that material winds around the roll and thus builds up somewhat before the wringer can be stopped. The pivotal mounting of the feeding device permits it to swing away from the lower roll so that there is no particular injury possible due to such winding up of the material.
I prefer to provide one of the feeding devices both at the front and rear of the wringer. It will be noted that at the rear the feeding rolls will be reversed and consequently the upper surfaces will travel in a discharge direction and thus assist in carrying the clothes clear of the wringer. This placing of the feeding devices at both sides makes it possible to utilize either side of the wringer.
What I claim as new is:-
1. In a wringer feeding mechanism, the combination of wringer rolls; a clothes feeding device having a traveling surface leading to the bite of the wringer rolls, said device comprising a frame having resilient arms at its ends; means driven from the wringer dry/ing said feeding device; and a detachable pivotal mounting for said frame adapted to be assembled and detached by springing of the arms.
2. In a wringer feeding mechanism, the combination of wringer rolls; a feed roll having a traveling surface below and leading to the bite of the wringer rolls and bearing pintles at its ends; a driving roll frictionally engaging a wringer roll and said feed roll, said driving roll having pintles at its ends; and a mounting having side arms with slots receiving the pintles of the feed roll and perforations receiving the pintles of the driving roll, said slots permitting the feed roll to frictionally ride the driving roll.
3. In a wringer feeding mechanism, the combination of wringer rolls; a plurality of feed rolls having traveling surfaces below and leading to the bite of the wringer rolls, said feed rolls having bearing pintles at their ends; a driving roll frictionally engaging a wringer roll and said feed rolls, said driving roll having pintles at its ends; and a mounting having side arms with slots to receive the pintles of the feed rolls and perforations receiving the pintles ofthe' driving roll, said slots permiting the feed rolls to frictionally ride the driving roll.
4. In a wringer feeding mechanism, the combination of a frame; a clothes feeding device comprising a plurality of successive feeding rolls below the bite of the wringer rolls having upper traveling surfaces adapted to lead clothes to the bite of wringer rolls; and means adapted to be actuated frictionally from a wringer roll for driving said rolls.
5. A wringer feeding mechanism comprising a frame adapted to be attached to a wringer frame; a clothes feeding device comprising a plurality of successive feeding rolls below the bite of the wringer rolls having upper traveling surfaces adapted to lead clothes to the bite of wringer rolls to which the frame may be attached; and a driving r011 adapted to be driven by a wringer roll, said driving roll directly engaging and frictionally driving said feeding rolls.
6. In a wringer feeding mechanism, the combination of a frame having end plates with slots therein; a feeding device comprising a roll below and leading to the bite of wringer rolls to which the frame is attached having pintles operating in said slots; and a friction roll journaled in said frame adapted to frictionally engage a wringer roll and said feeding roll.
