GAME
H. G. BADGEROW GOAL J e v? \1 i: W
. 3M lame afield/523w army) Patented May 8, I934 UITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The invention relates to games and has as an object the provision of a game roughly simulating the game of football.
It is a further object of the invention to provide an apparatus for playing a game simulating the game of football wherein discs to represent players are arranged by one player in the position where the ball is downed and wherein the game pieces representing the attacking team arranged in a desired charging formation are rolled down an incline in an attempt to overcome the first referred to formation.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing showing an illustrative embodiment of the invention and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a playing surface with the game apparatus placed thereon;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the apparatus; and
Fig. 3 is an end View seen from the right of Fig. 2.
For the purpose of playing the game of the invention there is shown a playing surface divided by lines 11 to represent the ten-yard lines upon the football field. The game is played by using game pieces 12 in the form of discs preferably about the size of checkers. The pieces representing the team upon the defense are arranged by one player in any form which in his judgment will best resist an attack and which arrangement will be modified by the player in accordance with the position where the ball was last downed.
No piece to represent a ball is provided but the player acting upon the offensive designates one of his pieces, which are numbered consecutively, as representing the man who is supposed to carry the ball. To simulate a charge of the attacking team an inclined plane 13 is provided which may be supported upon a standard 14 to hold the plane upon the incline, as shown.
To restrain the charging team in its position as arranged for a charge, there is shown a gate member 15 comprising a barrier 16 having rearwardly directed arms 1'7, 18 pivoted as at 19 upon the inclined plane 13, as by passage of a rod 20 through the standard 14. For convenience in raising the barrier 16, the members 17, 18 are shown as projected beyond the pivotal point and as turned into thumb- engageable members 21, 22.
The charging game pieces 12 will be arranged by a player in any manner that he desires placing the same upon edge so that they will roll and with some or all of them in contact with the barrier 16. One possible arrangement is indicated in Fig. 1 where there are three ranks of attackers ready to be released. As stated, when the game pieces have been arranged as desired the player acting upon the offensive indicates which of the game pieces is to be regarded as the ball carrying piece upon which the barrier 16 is raised about the pivot 19 either by grasping the barrier itself and lifting the same or by downward pressure upon the members 21, 22 as by the thumbs of the player. The charging pieces are therefore allowed to roll by gravity and under their own weight down the incline, being evenly and quietly released by raising the barrier. Rolling down the incline they will impinge upon the defense players 12 and after the pieces have come to rest the position of the ball carrying piece is ascertained, thus determining the distance which the ball was advanced by the play. The offensive player will then rearrange his team at this point ready for a second attack.
The rules as to advancing the ball, going out of bounds, etc., may be made the same as in a game of football.
Minor changes in the form of the apparatus may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. Game apparatus comprising, in combination: a playing surface in simulation of a football gridiron; a plurality of game pieces to be arranged in charge-resisting formation thereon; a plane surfaced incline shiftable on said playing surface; a plurality of rollable game pieces to be arranged in charging formation on said incline; means on said incline for restraining and for releasing said rollable game pieces simultaneously, said means comprising a barrier formed with arms pivoted at their extremities to said incline. 95
2. Game apparatus comprising, in combination: a playing surface in simulation of a football gridiron; a plurality of disc-shaped game pieces to be arranged thereon, their parallel surfaces horizontal, in charge-resisting formation; a plane surfaced incline shiftable on said playing surface; a plurality of disc-shaped game pieces to be arranged on edge in charging formation on said incline, means comprising a barrier pivoted on said incline to restrain and to release said disc-shaped game pieces simultaneously, to be impelled by gravity against said charge-resisting formation.
