This invention relates to devices for forcing pin members out of openings in other members in which the pin members have become firmly seated, particularly for removing hinge pins from hinges. In many cases, hinge pins become so thoroughly rusted, or bent, or otherwise tightly seated in the hinge members that it is practically impossible to remove them by ordinary manual punching or pulling operations without bending or breaking the hinge members. The principal objects of this invention are a device which is capable of forcing a hinge pin out of a hinge member Without injuring the hinge member and which is readily adjustable to adapt the device to pin members and hinge members of different sizes.
Other objects are a device which is easily operated, which is simple in construction, and which is comparatively inexpensive to make.
The invention consists in the hinge pin puller and in the parts and combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Fig. 1 is a front view of a hinge pin puller device embodying my invention withv the device shown in position for forcing a hinge pin out of a hinge member, and
Fig. 2 is a vertical section along the line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawing is shown a hinge pin puller device particularly adapted for forcing hinge pins out of automobile door hinge members. The device is operated by hydraulic pressure; it 35 is shown clamped on an automobile door hinge member 1 in position for forcing a hinge pin 2 therefrom.
'The puller device comprises a body portion 3 having an integral jaw 4 at its upper end and a larger jaw 5 at its lower end. The opening 6 defined by the jaws accommodates the hinge member 1. The end of the lower jaw 5 is enlarged and bored out to form a chamber 7 adapted to constitute a high pressure hydraulic cylinder. The lower jaw 5 also has an integral lateral extension 8 thatis bored out to form a chamber 9 adapted to constitute a primary hydraulic cylinder; and the twocylinders are connected by an opening 10.
Disposed within the high pressure cylinder is a plunger 11 comprising a head portion 12 and a stem portion 13 that extends above the top of said cylinder. The upper portion of the inner periphery of the cylinder is threaded for screwing therein an exteriorly threaded sleeve member 14 that has a central opening through which the stem of the plunger 11 extends; and the top of said sleeve member is provided with an annular collar portion 15 whose outer periphery is, preferably, knurled. A coil spring 16, surrounding the stem oi the plunger, is interposed between the sleeve member and the head of the plunger.
The primary cylinder has a piston member 17 disposed therein that is provided on the end of a screw member 18 extending through a threaded 55 opening in an exteriorly threaded cap 19 fixed in the cuter end of the cylinder. The outer end of said screw member 18 is provided with a suitable handle 20 for rotating it. The top of the u primary cylinder is provided with a fitting 21 70 for a pressure gun or other device (not shown) for iilling the cylinders with a hydraulic medium.
The upper jaw of the body portion of the device is provided with an enlarged end portion having an opening 22 therethrough that extends 75 in alinement with the plunger in the high pressure cylinder. Fitted in said opening 22 is a sleeve member 23 having an annular collar portion 24 at its bottom whose outer periphery is, preferably, knurled. The top of said collar portion 24 abuts against the bottom of the part of the upper jaw surrounding the opening 22 therethrough.
In operating the device, it is clamped on the l hinge member 1 by resting the bottom of the 85 sleeve member 23 in the upper jaw on the top of the hinge member l, and then rotating the sleeve member 14 that is mounted around the stem of the plunger until the top of said sleeve member 14 engages the bottom of the hinge member 1. 90 In this connection, it is important to note that the top edge of the central opening through the sleeve member 14 is beveled as at 25. For the device to operate properly, it must be clamped on the hinge member 1 in such position that the 95 plunger is in alinement with the hinge pin 2. With automobile door hinges, in particular, the lower end of the hinge pin usually extends a slight distance below the bottom of the hinge member. Accordingly, the beveled edge around the opening at the top of the sleeve member 14 will cooperate with the lower end of the hinge pin when the device is being clamped on the hinge member to cause the device to move into correct operative position with the stem of the plunger in exact alinement with the hinge pin. After the device is clamped on the hinge member, the screw member handle 20 is operated to move the screw member 18 inwardly which sets up a pressure in the primary cylinder that is transmitted to the high pressure cylinder. The pressure set up in the high pressure cylinder forces the plunger therein upwardly and causes its stem portion to engage the hinge pin and to force it out of the hinge member. The coil spring 16 that is mounted around the stem of the plunger forces the piston downwardly againV after the hinge pin is removed and the pressure is relieved.
The hinge pin puller device hereinabove described is readily adjustable for removing hinge pins out of hinge members of different sizes. If hinge pins having comparatively large heads are to be removed, the sleeve member in the upper jaw of the device may be removed therefrom to provide a larger opening for accommodating the large pin heads. Furthermore, the sleeve member 14 that is mounted around the stem of the plunger, besides constituting a guide for said plunger and a means for properly alining the same, can also be screwed up and down to vary the gap between the jaws. In this connection, it is to be noted that when the guide bushing 14 is screwed to cause it to move inwardly of the cylinder, the coil spring and the plunger will also move inwardly with the sleeve when the pressure is relieved.
The device can also be conveniently handled; it is comparatively easy to operate. The device is readily clamped on to the work in correct operative position before applying the pressure to force out the hinge pin. It is not necessary, therefore, to hold the device in position at the same time that it is manipulated to apply the pressure. The device is simple in construction, and by reason of its novel shape, is particularly adapted for removing hinge pins from automobile door hinges. The operating handle of the device is carried out at right-angles to the body of the device in a convenient place away from the fenders and the body of the automobile.
Obviously, the construction hereinabove described admits of considerable variations without departing from the spirit of the invention. For instance, it may be feasible to use a separate pressure gun, or the like, which may be removably attached to the lower end of the high pressure cylinder instead of making the primary cylinder as an integral part of the body of the device. As other changes may be desirable, I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction and arrangement of parts shown and described.
What I claim is:
A hinge pin puller comprising a hand grip portion having jaws at its ends, one of said jaws having an opening extending therethrough, a hinge pin receiving sleeve removably mounted in said opening and provided at its hinge engaging end with a stop collar adapted =to abut against the adjacent face of said jaw, the other of said jaws being provided with a high pressure cylinder, a sleeve threaded into said high pressure cylinder in axial alinement with said iirst mentioned sleeve, a piston including a head disposedy in said high pressure cylinder and a hinge pin engaging stem slidable in said threaded sleeve, said thread,- ed sleeve being provided in its outer end with a hinge engaging collar and the opening in said sleeve being beveled at the collar end thereof, and a coil spring sleeved on the stem of said piston between the head thereof and the inner end of said threaded sleeve, said other jaw having a lateral extension disposed at an angle of substantially ninety degrees to said hand grip portion and provided with a primary cylinder communieating at its inner end with said high pressure cylinder.
