(or. were) This invention relates to a tool for removing bushings, bearings or the like from inaccessible places. The tool is particularly adaptable for removing the bearings from the end plate of an electric motor. it is also adaptable for inserting the valve guides of an internal combustion engine.
The main object of the invention is to provide a tool of the character described which consists of few parts, and which can be manufactured at low cost and which are readily assembled and disassembled.
' A further object of the invention is to provide a tool of the character described which is provided with adapters and connections "for accommodating the device for use for the different pur poses set forth.
Further and more limited objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds and by reference to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. l is a view in side elevation of my improved tool; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the tool shown in Fig. 1, showing the tool being used to remove a bushing or bearing; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing how the tool is 'used to insert a bushing or hearing in place; Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line ll-d of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a view of the same tool having a member detachably secured thereto to adapt it for use for removing a bearing from inaccessible places and Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail sectional view showing the manner in which the extensions are applied to the rod.
Referring now to the drawing, the tool consists essentially of a body member l which 'is preferably cylindrical in shape and provided with a hollow sleeve-like extension 2. Extending axially of the body member l is an opening 3 through which extends a rod t having a threaded portion 5 adjacent one end. The opposite end of the rod is somewhat reduced in diameter as shown at t and is provided with a threaded end portion 7! adapted to receive thereover a tap t which is provided with a shoulder adapted to be inserted within the end of a bushing or bearing, as shown in Fig. 2. The rod t is slidably mounted within the opening in the body member and is held against rotation with respect thereto by means of a key Threadedly secured over the opposite end of the rod 4 is a nut ill in which are threadedly secured a pair of arms I l and i2 by means of which the nut may be turned. It will be clear that rotation of the nut ID will cause an endwise movement of the rod 4 with respect to the body memberl.
The reference character l3 indicates a member I also provide an extension rod in which it is desired to remove or insert a bushing or bearing which is indicated by the reference character lid. When the tool is to be used to remove a bearing, the parts are moved to the position shown in Fig. 2 so that the reduced end of 5 the rod projects beyond the end of the hearing. The tap it is then threadedly secured to the reduced end portion i of the rod and the nut it then turned by means of the arms ii and ill to pull the bearing toward the left as seen in Fig. 2 10 into the hollow end portion 2 of the body memher i. 'When it is desired to insert a bearing in place, the parts are moved to the position shown in Fig. 3 and the bearing it is then secured over the extending end portion of the rod and the tap it secured in place. The nut iii is then turned to force the bushing up into the member it. i
In order to adapt the .tool for use in removing bushings or bearings from inaccessible places,
such as from connecting rods or pistons, it pro- 29 vide a sleeve-like extension or adapter iii which iits into the end portion 2 of the body member.
it which is threadedly secured to the reduced end l of the rod t by means of a coupling member ill. The outer end of the extension rod it is provided with an enlarged head portion d. I furnish with the tool one or more adapters it and extensions it whereby to adapt the tool for use for purposes hereinbefore described. In Fig. 6 there is disclosed an extension rod til having a threaded socket til and a reduced threaded end portion ti adapted to receive a tap t thereover.
The end of the body member t adjacent the nut it is knurled as shown at it so that it may be more readily gripped in the hand. It is of course understood that I supply with the tool a number of taps 8 adapted to fit the different sized bearings or bushings. 4!
It will now be clear that I have provided a tool of the character described which will accomplishthe objects of the invention hereinbefore stated. It is to be understood that the embodiment of the invention herein disclosed is merely illustrative and is not to be considered in a limiting sense as various changes may be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention. It is therefore understood also that I furnish with the tool a number of taps 9 of different sizes and that these taps may have a tapered shouldered portion to fit different sized hearings or bushings. It is therefore to be understood that the invention is to be limited only in accordance with the scope of the appended claim.
10 same endwise with respect to said body member,
and a tap detachably secured to the outer end of said rod adapted to engage a bushing, bearing or the like, said nut having a pair of arms thereon by means of which it may be manually operated, and an adapter detachably secured within the end of said body member and having a hollow reduced sleeve-like extension thereon, said tap having a shoulder thereon adapted to engage a bushing, hearing or the like.
