.Thisinvention relates to a contrivance which may be conveniently referred to as a hanger, the same being expressly constructed for supporting a chemical fire extinguisher of the type used in public buildings, oilices, homes and elsewhere.
As. a general. rulegpthe chemical fire extinguisher is provided with one or more handlelike bails, one of which is engaged over a suspension or hanger hook on anv appropriate sup porting surface disposed in readiness for use in case of emergency.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a new type of hanger which is in the nature of a safety appliance permitting the fire extinguisher to be successfully suspended in an inactivestate so long as it is in condition for use; that is, filled with the chemicals, but so constructed as to prevent replacement of the extinguisher by untrained hands, or to permit replacement of a used extinguisher.
The idea involved in this arrangement is to avoid the hanging on the hook, of an extinguisher which was previously used and which is not in condition for reuse so as to avoid a catastrophe, and tomake it necessary to replace the used extinguisher with one which is in condition foractionin case of a subsequent emergency or fire.
Briefly, this idea is involved in a structure including a key-controlled device which is automatic in the sense that as soon as the fire extinguisher is removed from the hanger, the latter will become ineffective through the automatic action of a retracting and retaining lock. Thus, in order'to render the hanger again-available, it is necessary to unlock it, this being done by an authorized person, so that it will be in proper condition for -re-use when another emergency arisesa The particular structure for accomplishing these results will become more readily apparent from the following description and drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a hanger constructed in accordance with the present invention. a v
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a central vertical sectional view through the structure showing the cover plate covering the suspension hook, rendering the hanger out of use until the lock is opened by a position for ready use.
person. v Figures is a view hooks uncovered :with
like Figure showing the the fire extinguisher in Figure 5 ,isarear elevational view with portionsbroken away to show theinternal details.
Figure 5 is a side view of the shackle cf the l'ock.-.
Figure -7 is a front view of Figure 6, observing in a direction from left to right.
In the drawings, the reference character 8 designates a plate on which a substantially rectangular box-like housing 9 is mounted. This housing is formed in the top with a key entrance hole 10. The front is provided with a slot as at 11 to. facilitate entrance of the handle 12 onthe fire extinguisher 13 as seen in Figure 4. The side walls of the housing are cut away to form hooks 14 which when uncovered 7 receive the handle '12 as shown in Figure 4.
'key in the possession of an authorized ofiicer or I Inside of the housing is a suitable lock casing 15 having a key-hole 16, Figure 2, for reception of an appropriate key 17 as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 1. The lock includes a U-shaped shackle 18 which is provided with a stem 19 as seen in Figure 7, having upper and lower fingers;
20 and 20a which function as keepers. These engage over the channel-shaped portion 21 of the cover plate. The cover plate is in the nature ofa slide 22 of channel-shaped design mounted for sliding action inside of the housing and it includes a lower portion 23 to serve as a shutter for the slot 11 and the hooks 14 as well as an extension shelf or flange 24.
Inside of the casing are lifting coiled springs 25 which serve to lift the shutter to closing positionand to cause it to be locked as the shackle 18 moves into the lock casing 15. Thus the shackle is thus rendered ready for receiving the suspension element 12 of the extinguisher 13 as shown in Figure 4. This renders the extinguisher ready for removal in case of fire. 1
As soon however, as the extinguisher is lifted out'of the slot and removed from the hooks 14, the springs 25 come into play and slide the shutter up to the position shown in Figure 3, thus covering the, slot and the hooks for preventing accidental or thoughtless replacement of the used extinguisher. This avoids a catastrophe such as box-like housing provided A careful consideration of the description in connection with the drawings will enable the, reader to obtain a clear understanding of the construction, arrangements, and features and advantages therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Minor changes in shape, size and rearrange-.
ment of details coming within the field of inven tion claimed may be resorted to in actual practice if desired.
What is claimed is:
1. In a hanger of the class described, a hollow V with a handle receiving slot and suspension hooks at the opposite ends of said slot, a spring pressed slide in said housing including a shutter plate adapted to entirely cover said slot and hooks, a lock casing in said housing including a shackle having operating connection with said slide.
2. In a hanger and in combination, a housing having a slot in one of its walls and also having hook means in communication with said slot and closed when the slot is closed, a spring influenced shutter arranged in one position to close said slot, and lock-controlled means for preventing movement of the shutter from said position save when the lock is actuated by its complementary key.
3. In a hanger and in combination, a housing having a slot in one of its walls and also having hook means in communication with said "slot and closed when the slot is closed, aspring influenced shutter arranged in one position to close said slot, and lock-controlled means for preventing movement of the shutter from said position save when the lock is actuated by its complementary key; said shutter having a projection extending through and movable in said slot.
l. In a hanger and in combination, a housing having a'slot in one of its walls and also having hook means in communication with said slot, a spring influenced shutter movable in the housing and having 'a'U-shaped'inwardly extending portion and also having a projection extending through and movable in the slot, said'shu'tter adapted in one position to closesaid slot, and lockcontrolled means engaging said U- shaped portion for preventing movement of the shutter from said position save when the lock is actuated by its complementary key.
