Referring now to Figs. 1 and 2, 10 indicates the base and 12 the pressure pad carrying arm of a heel building machine of a well-known type.
The double-deck heel holder of the present invention is mounted upon a table 14 which is secured to the base 10 by bolts 16. The holder comprises a work receiving plate 18 in which are provided guideways 2O for a rear gage 22 which is normally immovable, but is adjustable longitudinally of the heel holder.
The rear gage 22 is adapted to engage and position one section 24 of a two-section heel of which the second section is shown at 26. As illustrated, the heel sections 24 and 26 consist respectively of a rubber heel and a heel base which it is desired to secure together to constitute a complete heel ready for attachment to a shoe.
Yieldingly mounted upon the rear gage 22 is a second rear gage 28 which is slidab'ly mounted upon said gage 22 and yieldingly pressed toward the front of the holder by a compression spring 80, the front end of which bears against a pin 32 screwed into the member 28 (see Figs. 1 and 3). It will be apparent that the gage 28 will partake of any movement of adjustment of the member 22 but will be capable at all times of yielding relatively thereto, and the dimensions of the parts are such that the gage 28 will engage and position the second heel section 26. Fore and aft adjustment of the above-described rear gages7 longitudinally olil the heel holder, is eiiected by one of the two sets of threads of a right and left screw 34, the rear endoi` which is swiveled in the stationary table 14, as shown at 36, in such a manner as to prevent longitudinal movement of the screw, while permitting it to be turned freely about its axis. he right-hand threads 38 of the screw engage corresponding threads in a lug 40 (see Fig. 3) depending from the rear gage 22, through which lug the screw 34 passes.
The left-hand threads 42 of the screw 34 engage corresponding threads in a. lug 44 depending from a slide 46 which is also guided for fore and aft longitudinal movement upon the table 14. rlhe adjusting screw 34 is provided with a knob 48 by which` it may be turned in one direction or the other to adjust the rear gages 22, 28 and the slide 46 simultaneously toward or from each other.
Supported upon the slide 46, and movable therewith, is the breast and side gage mechanism which will now be described. Slides 50, 52 (see Figs. 2 and 6) are supported and guided for transverse movement upon the member 46 and are simultaneously adjusted toward or from each other, transversely of the heel holder, by a right and left screw 54 provided with a manually operable knob 56. Upon each of the slides and 52 there is formed a breast gage 58 and a side gage 60, which are properly disposed to be engaged by, and to position, the breast and side edges of the heel section 24.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that rotation of the knob 48 will eiiect adjustment or' the breast gages 58 and the rear gage 22 toward or from each other, the side gages 60 moving with the breast gages 58 and the yielding rear gage 28 moving with the rear gage 22. Y Independently of this adjustment rotation of the knob 56 will eliiect transverse adjustment to the side gages 60 toward or from each other so that the holder may,'by manipulation of the knobs 48 and 56, be adjusted accurately to fit and position the heel section 24.
For positioning the superposed heel section 26 in proper register with the iirst section 24 there are provided additional breast gages 62 which are carried by the slides 50, and are guided to move reely through said slides longitudinally of the heel holder. The

Pins 78 secured in the slide 46 co-operate with diagonal slotsY 80 in the plates 68 so to guide the plate that it moves longitudinally of the heel holder when the adjusting screw 70 is operated, thus causing the breast gages 62 to be adjusted longitudinally of the holder relatively to the gages 58, this adjustment not being affected in any way by transverse adjustment of said gages because the groove 66 is parallel to the adjusting screw 54. The purpose of adjusting the gages 62 relatively to the gages 58 is to provide for positioning the heel sections 24, 26 either with their breast faces in alinement with each other or with one overhanging the other, as may be required by the nature of the work in hand.
For the transverse positioning of the upper heel section 26 there are provided side gages 82 which are pivoted at 84 upon the respective slides 50 and 52, and have at their outer ends blocks 86 (see Fig. 3) which engage l'reely in a transverse slot 88 formed in thetop oi a `shaped member 90 which is guided for longitudinal movement in guideways 92 formed in the slide member 46. In a heel assembling machine, a doubledecl heel holder comprising separate gages for the breast portions of two superposed sections of a heel, a gage for the rear portion oi one of said sections, and means for simultaneously usting the breast gages and the rear gage toward or from each other longitudinally of the heel. In a heel assembling machine, a double-deck heel holder comprising side gages adjustable toward or Jfrom each other for positioning transversely one section of a heel, yieldingly closed gages mounted upon said side gages and adjustable therewith for positioning transversely a second section of said heel, and means for adjustably limiting the closing movement of the lyielding gages independently of their adjustment toward or from each other.
l1. In a heel assembling machine, the combination of a heel holder which is adjustable to accommodate heel sections of different sizes, and a pressure applying pad which is adjustable in size to correspond to various adjustments of the holder.

In heel assembling machine, the combination of a heel holder having adjustable breast and rear gages, means for adjusting said gages toward or from each other, a pressure applying pad having adjustable breast and rear sections, and means for adjusting said sections of the pad toward or from each other to cause the pad to correspond to the holder.

In a heel assembling machine, the combination of a heel holder having adjustable breast and rear gages, means for simultaneously adjusting said gages toward or from each other, a pressure applying pad having adjustable breast and rear sections, and means for silnultaneously adjusting said sections of the pad toward or from each other to cause the pad to correspond to the holder.

In a heel assembling machine, the combination of adjustable side gages for positioning a heel section transversely, means for simultaneously adjusting said gages toward or from each other, a pressure applying pad having side sections adjustable toward or from each other, and means for simultaneously adjusting said side sections of the pad to cause it to conform to the holder.
l5. In a heel assembling machine, the combination of an expansible and contractile pressure applying pad, and means for adj usting the size of said pad to conform to heels or' different sizes.
16. In a heel assembling machine, a pressure applying pad comprising a series of radially relatively movable pressing sections.
17. In a heel assembling machine, a pressure applying pad comprising a plurality of radially adjustable sections, and means for adjusting said sections radially to vary the size of the pad.
18. In a heel assembling machine, a pressure applying pad comprising a plurality of radially adjustable sections and a single means for simultaneously adjusting said section radially to vary the size of the pad.
19. In a heel assembling machine, an eX- pansible pressure applying pad comprising a plurality of radially movable sections each having an inclined inner face, and a wedge element arranged to engage the inner faces ot said sections and move them radially to vary the size of the pad.
20. In a heel assembling machine, an eX- pansible pressure applying pad comprising a plurality of radially movable sections, a wedge element arranged to move said sections radially to vary the size of the pad, and a screw operable to move the wedge element.
