The present inventionis directed tothe further improvement in the method of andl machine` for making shoes shown in. the patent issued to me December 21,193.7, and; bearing No. 2,103,120, in whichv dies used in` making formed flapsfor heels are described, and which die constructions may alsoV be used in the present machine, together with partsof'the device shown in said' patent.
In. using the, machine shown in said patent,. the operator was obliged to place the shoe in exactly the .correct position relative to the flapforming dies to insure a proper t of thev formed flap with the breast of the selected heel when placed'`- in proper position on a4 shoe,thus` requiring a highly skilled operator who was capable of judging the correct position of the blank flap prior to the forming operation, mistakes causing. loss of'materialjand time anda failure in the tting to properly match. the form of the breast of' the heel resulting therefrom; such troubles being entirely eliminated by the present method and. machine for the purpose designed.

Fig. 9 is a sectional view along the central line of a modied form of the machine, in which a cutting die is used instead of a shearing die, and a cam and lever are embodied in the machine instead of utilizing a separate press, the last and all parts being in the position in which the flap is about to be stamped out.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1-8 of the drawings, I provide a housing, comprising a base-plate I5, side walls 2I, and a top plate 22 which carries a lower die member I3 designed to form a flap when the upper die member I2 is forced into co-operative engagement therewith.
I indicates the platform of a press 0f usual construction, provided with means (not shown) for actuating said upper die. The base-plate I5 of the housing is secured to said platform I0 in detachable relation, by the clamp construction I6 as illustrated, or in any suitable manner.
I1 indicate vertically extending pillars secured to the base-plate I5, which support springs I8, which in turn carry a laterally extending plate I9 xed t0 depending tubular guides 20 which are slidable on the pillars, which extend therethru, and which plate I9 carries the upper die. As shown, the lower die is formed integral with the plate 22, but may instead be carried by said plate.
23 indicate two side strips which are secured to the side plates 2| by bolts 24, and 25 indicate the supporting arms of the carriage.
The carriage comprises a plate 26, secured in xed relation with the arms 25, said plate being provided with two transversely extending slots 21 and 28, spaced from each other as shown.
A plate 35 located below the plate 26 carries a slidable element 30 guided in the slot 28, which carries an upwardly extending pintle 3| which supports the last borne by the carriage.
Carried by the plate 33 and located in the slot 21 is a laterally slidable element 32, which is also carried by the plate 35 which plate is actuated by the lever 36, which is pivoted at 31 and is slotted at its inner end, and a pin 38 extends through this slot 40 and into the element 32 in xed relation therewith and consequently movable by the lever.
43 indicates a screw which extends through the back wall 59 of the housing and is used to adjust and limit the movement of the carriage. 44 indicates the handle of the lever 36.
One or both sides of the carliage is calibrated as illustrated at 45, to serve as a guide in adjusting the inward stroke or movement of the carriage.
46 indicate two adjusting pins, actuated by integral screws 41, for limiting the movement of the sliding element 30.
The slot 4I in plate 35, and screw 42 therein, cooperate in securing straight transverse motion of said plate and attached parts.
The sliding element 32 has two V-shaped recesses 48'in its forward face, as shown in Figs. 5 and 7. A pair of tubular openings 50 are closed at their forward ends by plate 5I and constricted at their inner ends. Each contains a spring 52, the outer ends of which bear against the plate 5I and the inner ends of which bear against members 53, the wedge-shaped ends of which are pressed partly through the constricted inner ends of tubular openings 50, for engaging the V- shaped recesses 48 of the element 32, but cannot pass entirely out. The openings are spaced further apart than the recesses 43, so that at either extreme position of the element 32 in the slot 21 one of the springs can press its member 53 into the corresponding recess 48, the member 53 of the other tube remaining disengaged because out of register with the other recess.
34 is a positioning member, being an integral part of the plate 33 (see Figs. 5 and 7), and serves to position the forward portion of the last between itself and one or the other of the members 54, according to whether a right or left shoe is inserted in the machine. The members 54 are thin enough to yield upon movement of the abutment 34 forcing the last against the same, and are secured to the carriage plate 25.

This embodiment of the invention constitutes a unitary mechanism, which may be inserted in and actuated by any suitable press.
The operation of this embodiment of my invention is as follows: At the beginning of the operation, a skilled operator places in the machine a last bearing the upper and sole of one specimen of the particular type, style and size of shoe, a series of which is to be worked upon, the sole being split in the usual manner. To position the last, he draws the carriage outward by means of the handle 44, into the position shown in Fig. 3, and while the carriage is thus extended, places the last, designated 55, bottom up, with the hole 56 impaled upon the pintle 3I, and the forward portion located between the positioning member 34 and one or the other of the members 54, depending on being a right or left shoe. The member 34 is adjusted for a right or left shoe by shifting the handle 44 laterally, the swinging motion of the handle 44 and lever 36 being translated into a straight transverse motion of the member 32. If necessary in order to bring the last into correct line, the rear portion is adjusted laterally by means of pins 46 and integral screws 41, which limit the lateral movement of sliding element 30. If required by the shape of the particular lasts to be used, one or more rings 58 are placed upon the pintle 3I to raise the rear portion of the last and bring the ap into approximately the same plane as the lower die member I3 and the spring-supported conforming plate 29 which lies in the plane of plate 22 until the press is actuated. The last is thus held firmly in its adjusted position upon the carriage. The screw 43 is set to limit the rearward movement of the carriage.
These adjustments being correctly made, the carriage is pushed rearwardly, to the extent permitted by the screw 43, and then occupies a position similar to that shown in the modified view Fig. 9. The ap I4 passes above and rests upon the plate 22 and lower die member I 3, and is thus automatically positioned correctly, and the press is then operated, the plunger II depressing the plate I9 and forcing the upper die member into shearing engagement with the lower die member and cutting the desired shape of flap in exactly the desired and predetermined location.
In Fig. 3, the trim remaining from the cutting operation is indicated at 39.
The adjustments having been once correctly made, the operation may be repeated on successive shoes by an unskilled person, who can also adjust the machine from right to left or vice versa, by merely swinging the handle. Other parts.. of the machine are similar to the mechanism carried by the housing of the embodiment first described, and the operation of the modified embodiment will therefore be clear from the drawings and from what has been already said.
The advantages of the invention will be obvious from what has been above said with regard to the objects, construction and operation of the invention.
I do not limit myself to the particular details of construction and operation which have been described in this specification and illustrated in the drawings, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made in the same, within the scope of the claims hereof, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
1. A machine of the character described, comprising supporting and guiding means for a carriage, a carriage guided by said guiding means, means on said carriage for supporting the heel portion of a last having a shoe thereon provided with a blank ap portion for covering the breast of a heel, laterally adjustable means acting upon a relatively forward portion of said last for holding said portion in an adjusted position on the carriage, means for supporting the flap, and means operative to provide a formed iiap from the blank.
2. A machine of the character described, comprising supporting and guiding means for a carriage, a carriage guided by said guiding means, means on said carriage for supporting the heel portion of a last having a shoe thereon provided with a blank flap portion for covering the breast of a heel, laterally adjustable means acting upon a relatively forward portion of said last for hold- ,ing said portion in an adjusted position on the carriage, a platen for supporting the iiap, and means operative to provide a formed flap from the blank.
3. A machine of the character described, comprising a housing, a plate serving to support the heel flap of a shoe placed thereon, a flap-forming cutter, a carriage adapted to carry a last having a shoe thereon to a predetermined position relative to said nap-forming cutter, means for limiting the movement of the carriage, and means for supporting the last on the carriage, comprising laterally adjustable means for holding the heel portion of the last in a predetermined position and laterally adjustable means acting upon a relatively forward portion of the last for holding said portion in adjusted position.
6. 'Ihe construction dened in claim 5, together with means for simultaneously changing the adjustment of both said last-supporting means to support a last for a right or a left shoe in adjusted position.
'7. A machine of the character described, comprising a housing, means serving to support the heel flap portion of a shoe placed thereon, means operative to provide a formed flap from said blank flap, a carriage designed to carry a last having a shoe thereon to a predetermined position relative to said flap-forming means, means for supporting and guiding said flap to said predetermined position, and means for adjusting the last to and supporting the same in its final position on said carriage, comprising a plate movably secured to the body of said carriage, sliding elements carried by said plate and located in transverse slots in said main plate, a pintle carried by one of said sliding elements, an abutment carried by another of said sliding elements, and a pair of last-supporting members alternatively Icooperating with said abutment.
8. The construction dened in claim '7, together with a lever for moving said movable plate and supported elements transversely relatively to the body of said carriage.
9. A construction as defined in claim 7, in which said last-supporting members are 0f yielding construction to hold said last between one of said members and said abutment.
l0. The construction dened in claim '7, together with means for holding said secondary plate and attached parts in adjusted position, comprising a spring-actuated member engaging one of the sliding elements borne by said plate.

The construction defined in claim 7, together with means for holding said secondary plate and attached parts in adjusted position, comprising a pair of spring-actuated members mounted in said carriage, and a pair of diiferently spaced recesses in one of said sliding elements, one cio-operating member and recess being disengaged when the other co-operating member and recess are engaged.
12. The construction dened in claim 7, together with means for adjustably limiting the lateral movement of the sliding element bearing the pintle.
13. The construction defined in claim 7, together with adjustable pins for limiting the lateral movement in its slot of the sliding element bearing said pintle.
14. The construction defined in claim 7, together with an inclined surface adjacent said pintle upon which a portion of the last may rest.
15. The construction dened in claim 7, to-
gether with means for adjusting a portion of said 1 prisng a housing, means serving to support the heel flap of a shoe placed thereon, flap-forming means, a carriage adapted to carry a last having a shoe thereon to a predetermined position rela tive to said flap-forming means, means for limiting the movement of the carriage, and means for supporting the last on the carriage, comprising laterally adjustable means for holding the heel portion of the last in a predetermined position and laterally adjustable means acting upon a relatively forward portion of the last for holding said portion in adjusted position.
17. The construction dened in claim 16, together with means for simultaneously changing the adjustment of both said last-supporting means to support a last for a right or a left shoe in adjusted position.
