When it is desired to remove the pen 22 from the socket, it is only necessary to press upon the outer free end of the annular member 38 whereby the portion 34 will be moved away from the en 22 so that the pen will fall by gravity rom the socket.
The clip shown in Figures 2 and 5 comprises a leg 41 of a U-shaped member 42 with the outer free end 43 of the leg 44 being pointed to engage a point of the wall surface of the socket 11. The leg 41 is substantially straight and extended upwardly where it is bent as shown at 45 to provide a finger piece 46. Arms 47 extend outwardly from the finger piece and downwardly as shown at 48 with the members 48 being located outwardly or spaced from the surface of the outer end of the holder 10'so that when the pen holder is placed upon the desk, it will be supported in spaced relation from the desk on the members 48. This is also true of the clip shown in Figure 4 which has a substantially flat portion 49 supporting the pen holder. When it is desired to remove the pen from the socket 1], it is only necessary to press upon the members 48 whereby the leg 41 will be moved out of contact with the body of the pen 22. The same operation is effected when it is desired to insert the pen into the holder.
A modified form of the clip is shown in Figures 3 and 6 and in which a U-shaped member 50 has one leg 51 provided with a pointed end 52, while the other leg 53 has an extension 54 disposed at an angle to the leg 53. The extension of the pair of arms 55 and 56 is disposed at right angles to a plane passing through the member 54. The arm 55 is bent inwardly at 57 and then at 58 while the arm 56 embraces the extension of the arm 55 and has a rtion 57 located outwardly of the bent ortlon 57.
This c i i is inserted within the socket 11 shown in igure 3 and the pen is inserted through the passage formed by the arm 55 and its extensions 57 and 58. Due to the resiliency of the U-sha (1 member 50, the arm 54 will force the hea or portion 60 in clamping relation with the pen for maintaining the pen in position.
When it is desired to remove the pen or to insert a pen in the socket, it is only necessary to exert a slight pressure on the member 57 whence the leg 54 will be moved inwardly and permit the pen 22 to fall from the socket 11, or when the pen is being replaced, it may be inserted through the passage just described when pressure has been removed from the member 57. The resilience of the material will force the head 60 into clamping relation with the pen.
In the form shown in Figures 7, 8 and 9, it will be seen that the clip is made of resilient wire having a substantially annular member to receive the pen with the bridging portion 71 acting as a rest or support for the pen holder on a desk. The free ends of the member 70 are bent inwardly as at 72 and then downwardly to provide a pair of spaced legs 7 3 which are bent outwardly and upwardly to form a U-shaped member 74 with the free ends 75 of the legs 76 being pointed to engage a portion of the surface of the socket 11.
The clip is inserted within the socket and moved inwardly until the annular member 70 rests upon the outer end of the socket. Pressure upon the bridging portion 71 will move the legs 7 3 outwardly from the wall of the socket and either permit the removal or insertion of the pen 22. The legs are provided with shoulders 77 which engage the inner face of the pen 22, and aids in clamping the pen in position.
I claim:
1. A device for removably retaining a pen in the socket of a holder comprising a metal member formed of resilient material and having means received within the socket for frictionally engaging the walls of said socket, an arm projecting from said friction means and extending at right angles to the axis of the holder and across the open end of the socket and provided with a passage through which is adapted to be inserted the shank of a pen, said arm adapted to be manipulated across the outer end of the holder for releasing the pen point.
2. A device for removably retaining a pen in the socket of a holder comprising a metal member formed of resilient material having a U-shaped member received within the socket, one leg of the U-shaped member projecting beyond the open end of the socket and having a finger piece connected integrally with the last-mentioned leg to provide means for manipulatin the leg to release the pen, said finger piece having means upon opposite sides of the leg for engagement with the shank of the pen for aiding in clamping the shank against the wall of the socket.
3. A device for removablyretaining a pen in the socket of a holder comprising a metal member formed of resilient material and having a U-shapcd member received within the socket for frictionally engaging the walls of the socket, one leg of the U-shaped member being extended and adapted to enga e. the shank of the pen for maintaining sai pen in the socket, the free end of the extension being formed integrally with the leg and extending at a right angle to the extension to provide not only a finger piece actuating the extension to release the pen but to provide a rest for supporting the pen on a horizontal surface, said angular portion having an opening through which the pen is adapted to be inserted.
