Description
June 10, 1930. A. M. BOLLAND 1,753,128
SAFETY HOLDER Filed July 1929 Attorney Patented June 10, 1930 PATENT OFFICE ARTHUR H. HOLLAND, OF LOCKPORT, NEW YORK SAFETY Application filed July 5,
This invention relates to holders and an object of the invention is to provide for clamping one object to another to insure a safe union between the objects and morespecifi- 5 cally applied to a clamp adapted to support objects upon a clothes line.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, a clamp of the character referred to,
which is strong, compact and durable, thor-.
1 oughly reliable in its intended purpose,
adapted for securing both round and polygonal shaped objects of different dimensions and is very simple in its method of assembly, and comparatively inexpensive to inanufac l ture and operate.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as .will be hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in'the accompanying drawings wherein is disclosed an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the views: 0
Figure 1 is a detailed vertical sectional view of the device in accordance with this invention,
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof, and
Figure 3 is a detailed horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawings in detail 5 indicates a yoke-shaped body portion having inwardly projecting legs 6, 7 secured to the bight portion 8 at the inner end thereof. At the outer end of the legs 6, 7 there is formed integral, opposed ends 9, 10, directed inwardly from the legs and formed on inner faces with inwardly projecting teeth. The sections 9, 10 are not disposed in true right angled relation with respect to the legs and are disposed diagonally with respect to a perpendicular dropped from the legs 6, 7
A peripherally threaded stem extend ng HOLDER 1929. Serial No. 876,227.
perpendicularly through a threaded opening 13 is located centrally of the bight portion 8 and,has a head 14 at' one end thereof and reduced annularbearing 15 at the other end thereof. The bearing 15 is disposed between the threaded end of the stem 12, an annular abutment 16 formed on the extreme end of the stem.
A substantially rectangular plate 17 is movably confined within the yoke shaped body portion 5 and is of less thickness than the width of the annular bearing 15. The'inner end of the stem 12 is freely rotatable in an opening 18 formed centrally of the plate 17 and the abutment 16 is placed thereon. The 05 plate 17 is of less thickness than the bearing 15 and provides the plate to rock in angular relation with respect to the stem 12, to accommodate the securing of two objects of different widths or diameters.
Secured to the outer face of the plate 17 is a layer of compressible material, such as rubber or the like to provide better fitting of the objects by the clamp.
In the application of the clamp in accordance with this invention, stein'12prior to the attachment thereof isturned inwardly until the plate is spaced between the extension plates. By way of examp'le,.w'hen it is desired to attach an object to a coat hanger or the like, the clothes line is inserted in the upper end of theplate and the-extension 10 the hook of the clothes hangerbetween the plate 17 and the extension 9.
Thereafter the stem 12 is turned whereby the compressible layer 19 the hook hanger and the line will force the same; into engagement with the teeth 11 on the inner faces of the extensions 9, 10. The hangenwill be securely and safely attached tothe line. It is pointed out that the line is adapted for many purposes and while the method'of operation has been explained in connection with clothes line and a garment han er, the invention is. not limited thereto but is adapted for similar purposes. 7 Having described my invention, what I. claim as new is: 1. In a device of the character described comprising a yoke-shaped body portion. a 100 pair of inwardly disposed extensions secured on the ends of the legs thereof, a stem threadably mounted on the bight portion of and extending through said body portion, a. plate rockably mounted on the end of said stem and slidably confined in said yoke to selectively abut said extensions, said plate formed with a compressible layer on its outer face.
2. In a device of the character described comprising a yoke-shaped body portion, a pair of inwardly disposed extensions secured on the ends of the legs thereof, a stem threadably mounted on the bight portion of and extending through said body portion, a plate rockably mounted on the end of said stem and slidably confined in said yoke to selectively abut said extensions, said plate formed with a compressible layer on its outer face, said extensions formed with inwardly directed teeth adapted to grip objects disposed between the outer face of said plate and the inner face of said extension.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ARTHUR M. BOLLAND.
