N PETER& PHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON, D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLIN B. BRADLEY, OF SOUTH INGTON, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURRY-COMBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,407, dated September 19,1876; application filed March 16, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN B. BRAD- LEY, of Southington, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Curry-Combs; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to a curry-comb having teeth of different fineness on opposite sides, or having a curry-comb on one side and a mane-comb on the other, or a comb on one side and a brush onthe other, so that either side may be used according to the particular kind of work to be performed.
The invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of pivoted crank-rods and a clamping device, and combination thereof with the curry-comb and handle, whereby the handle may be shifted toward one side or the other to enable either face of the implement to be used at pleasure.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the manner of applying my invention to a doublefaced curry-comb, Figure 1 being a face view, with the handle partly in section, and Fig. 2 a section in the line at w of-Fig. 1.
The curry-comb A may be of any ordinary or suitable construction. It is here shown as having teeth of dili'erent fineness on the opposite faces. Itjmay be provided with a comb on one side or face, and a brush on the other, or a curry-comb on one face and a mane-coinb on the other; and the comb-bars and end pieces may be connected in any suitable manner.
At the two opposite ends of the comb are bearings for two pivots or rods, which connect the comb with the handle. These bearings may beformed on or attachedto the ends of the comb-bars, or to any convenient part of the comb. They are here shown as consisting of sleeves B, each of which is formed by doubling a plate, 0, midway of its width and the flat portions of said plates are riveted between the ends of the comb-bars D, and serve as the end pieces of the comb. In these sleeves or bearings B the pivots or side rods E are arranged so that the comb will oscillate on them and any suitable means maybe adopted to prevent the displacement of the parts, as by riveting or upsetting the metal of the rods, or
by a pin or pins passing through the same.'
The portions of the rods E which are outside of the bearings are cranked or bent toward each other, and are connected to the handle by means of a suitable clamping device. This clamping device is here shown as consisting of a screw, Gr, passing through eyes in the rods E, and entering an internal thread in the shank of the handle H. One of the eyes 0 may be formed to engage with the screw C, so as to prevent it from turning; and the other eye 6 may be elongated to form a slot for the screw to slide in when the handle is shifted, or both eyes may be elongated to form slots.
When the various parts are arranged, as hereinabove described, by turning the handle H so as to loosen the screw G, the handle may be readily shifted toward the other face of the comb and then, by turning it so as to tighten the screw, it is firmly clamped and locked in said position. The two positions are shown in Fig. 2, one being in fulllines and the other in dotted lines. By this construction and arrangement of parts, two instruments are combined in one, and the user is enabled to perform the work of either or both of two instru ments without the necessity for laying down one instrument and taking up the other.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 'Patent, is
The pivoted cranked rods E and clamp G, in combination with a curry-con1b and its handle, whereby provision is made for shifting the handle to either side and clamping it in place, to enable either face of the instrument to be used at pleasure, substantially as set forth.
