TAG R SIGN HOLDER Appnca'mm flied october 1, 1930. serial No. 485,743.
y This linvention rrelates to a tag or sign holder. An object of the invention is the provision of a tag or sign holder in which a license plate, tag, or sign and lamp housings are 4simultaneously locked to a supporting structure sorthat when the locking means is released the tag, licenseV plate, or sign and the housings maybe readily removed from the Another object of theinvention is the provisifonofatag, licenseV plate, or sign holder in which a supporting plate is adapted to be secured in a fixed position in accordance with the'construction described and claimed in ourv copending application, Serial No. 375,234, -iled July 1, 1929, fthe plate being adapted to 'removably supporta pair-of vlamp housings upon'opposite sides of a frame which is'adapted to removably secure the housings', license plate, or tag, to the plate.
A further object of the invention is the provision of aftg license plate, or sign holder of a` llznockdown construction, to which a plurality of lamp housings are re- 41 rirv-a-lilyico'rfnected by a frame that is locked tothesupporting plate with the frame ret' a i ni n', the tag, licenseplate, or sign against v'unauthcriaed removal, the lamp vhousings "being'piovided with windows upon which matt'er'is adapted toV be inscribed, certain "of the windows 'providing for the transmis- `sion of light upon the sign, tag, or license ',platej" l f 'flhis`v invention v 'will be best understood 'from aconsideration of the following detaileddescription, in view of the accompanyfingdrawings forming a part of the specification; nevertheless it is to be understood thatthe invention is not confined to the disclosure, being susceptible of such changes and modifications which shall define no mater-tial departure from the salient features of the4 invention as expressed in the appended claims In the drawings: -Fi'gure 1 is a view in elevation of a tag holder constructedl in 'accordance with the 'o'principlesef ourinvention,

Figure 5 is a fragmentary-view in perspective of one corner of the supporting plate. l
Referringmore particularly to the draw` ings, designates a supporting plate having a peripheral bead 11 projecting laterally outwardly therefrom for Va purpose which will be presently described. The shape of the plate may be of any suitable configuration. In this instance, however, the plate is elongated and is provided with-areinforcing web 12 extending from a centrally. disposed hollow hub 13, to points adjacent the periphery of the plate. The arms of theweb are bowed outwardly from the plate so that the hub 13 will be spaced from the back of the same.
The central portion ofthe plate is cut awayy to provide an elongated opening 14C.,v g
A license plate, tag, or sign is adapted to be disposed upon the central portion of the plate and has its edges resting pon marginal flanges 21 embracing the opening 14. A frame, generally designatedloyY the numeral 22, having an opening 23, is adaptedto be placed in flat contact with theftag 2O and locked in position. The frame has a marginal bead 24 embracing the opening 23 which has a greater thickness than the body of the frame.
The plate 10 is provided with ra slot 25 adapted to receive a curved lug 26 extending rearwardly from a projection 27 on one end of the frame. The lug has a bent portion 28 adapted to engage the back of the plate `10 frlir securing one end of the frame to the p ate. I
The opposite end of the frame 22 is provided with a lock 30 projecting from the rear face of the frame and along that portion of thev bead which is opposite to the projecting end 27. As shown more particularly in Fig. 1, the frame has a projection 3l received within-a similiarly'ormed portion 32 ofthe v Figure 2 is a plate 10 and the lock 30 is secured to the rear tace of such projection. The lock is received within a socket 33 formed on the rear face of the plate 10 and receives the lock. A locking bolt 34, slidably mounted in the lock, is adapted to engage a keeper 35 formed uponthe projecting ,Aend'p31 ot lthe traine-22;` A-ykeyhjole36 is in alignment with an opening 37'in the' projecting end 31 ot the frame 32. A key of suitable type is adapted turbe, inserted within the lkeyhole 36 for locking or unlocking the frame from the plate 10. T'
A lamp housing, generally designated by the numeral 40 is secured l:tofthe upper end not the plate 10and is removably connected therewith. v.The housing is provided with 4an opening l41 closed by ,transparent members 42. 'When itis desired, indicia may be applied to the transparent member so that when the lamps 43 are illuminated the indicia "will more clearly appear from the housing.
This lamp housing is also provided with an opening 44 at'vitsfunderface which is closed by `a translucent or transparent member 45 so thatlight from thelainps 43 will be proected ipon, the tag or sign 2 0.
The rear wall 46 of the housing 40 alongits lower edgeis provided with. a lug 47 adapted .to be received Within a socket 43y formed in the upper portion` of the bead 11.` The opposite wall of .theV housing is provided with a pair of lugs 49 adapted to be received within sockets 50 formed alongthe upperedgeofthe frame22. A second lamp housing 51 is loca'tedbelow the lower edge ofthe tag 20 and is constructed in a similar manner to the housing 40. The housing 51 has an opening 5 2covered with a transparent member 53 so that light rays lfrom the ylamps 54 will be directed upon the tag or sign 20. The front wall of the housing is provided with an opening 5v5 which'is closed by a transparent or Y, transul'cent member 56 upon which may be applied, indicia as indicated at 57 in Fig. 1.
vThe housing 51 has also a lug 47 adapted to be received within a socket56 formed in the lower'portion of the bead 11 which is-thiekf ened atthis section. Theiop'posite wall of 5() the, hou"sing 51 Ais also provided with a lug 49 adapted to be received within sockets 60 `formed inthe frame 22. l,
Thelamps 43 and 54 are secured to the outer .f tace of the plate 10 and wires 61 extend from the lamps to the hollow hub 13 and along the arms .of the web 12. rlhese wires are brought through the hollow hub and carried to a source of currentand also to a well known form o :tswitch -for controlling the circuits to the lamp, It will be noted that the inner ends {of'the housingsare open, as shown at 62, tand'these inner ends lie in flat contact with the flat' faces of the plate 10. It will be notedthat the sign, tag, or license .faire @mais Ofth'eknkrdown, construction and may be readily assembled or disassembled through the application or the removal of the frame 22. lVhen the frame 22 is removed the housings 40 and 5l may be easily disposed from their connections with the plate 10. It will thus be seen that the frame 22 simultaneously locks not only a tag or sign 20 to the plate 10 but also locks the housings to said plate. On' the other hand the release of the trame 22 by operating the lock 30 will likewise not onlyA release the sign or tag but also the housings.
In assembling the tag or sign upon the plate 10 the lugs 47 are slipped into their respective ' sockets 48 and 56 when the inner edge 62 ofthe housings are placed in flat contact with the outer face ot the plate 10. The tag, sign, or license plate holder is then placed-upon the marginal flange 22 of the plate 10andvthe lug 2G is inserted through the opening 25 in the plate 10.` The frame is then lowered `upon the license plate or tag in a swinging'manner when said -lock 3 0 will be receivedwithin the socket 33. Where the lock is of theV automatic type it is only necessary to -move the lock into its socket when the locking bolt 34 will be engaged behind the keeper 35. Otherwise it will be necessary to insert a keywithin appreciated that after the frame 22 is moved to its locking lposition the members 5,0 ,andO will engage over the lugs49 and inyconnection with thelugs 47 and theirzrespeotive sockets 4S and 56, the housings Will be securely held against movement.
