Thisdnvention has todo with cigar and cigarette holders, pipes, and similar articles used by smokers.

It is anobject of the invention,4 in one ofA '6 1ts embodiments, to provide a device of this kind by the use of which the operations of smoking may be performed either in the usual way, so far as expulsion of smoke from the mouth is concerned, or in an unexpected way l which, as will appear hereinafter, may readily `be made to furnish amusement. To this end I provide a construction such that the smoke drawn into the mouth may if desired be expelled through a special smoke-discharged orice in the device; and this orifice may be controlled either manually or by means of a check-valve. Where a' checkvalve is employed it may take a particular form; for instance, thecigarette or tobacco holding part of the device may be inthe form of a comic head, the smoke discharge orifice may be the nose thereof, and the check `valve av tongue which is retracted into the Ihead to close the discharge opening when smoke is drawn in, and is'projected from the head, incidentally opening the smoke discharge orifice', as the smoker expels smoke. Another feature of the invention, which may be utilized conj ointly with or independ- 'ently ofthe constructions abovevmentioned, isthe provision of independent sockets or receivers for a plurality of cigarettes, cigars, or tobacco charges.

Other objects and characteristics of the .35, invention will appear in the course of the following description of' the elements, combinations, and arrangements of the parts con stituting the invention, and the' scopeof protection contemplated is indicated in the claims. l p

Referring to the numerals on .the drawings, there is shown at 7 a tube like that of an ordinary cigarette holder, or like the stem of a tobacco pipe. This tube or stem terminates at one end in a receiver 8 for the cigarette or other smokable material or charge. This receiver may be shaped and or decorated to represent a comic face, human or animal or fanciful, with, for instance, a nose opening (or openings) 9 and a preferably upwardly extending cigarette receivingsocket 10. It is obvious that with a lighted cigarette in place, asin Fig. 1, if the opening 9 is covered by the finger, smoke may be drawn into the mouth of the smoker through the tube; and that, if the opening 9 be lnow uncovered, smoke may be expelled through the tube so that it will. issue out of the orifice 9. This opening may be a representation of a mouth,

a nose, or one or more eyes or ears, according GII to the fancy of the designer. The essential feature is that the device has a controllable smoke discharge orifice in communication with the tube, in addition to the cigarette receiving socket.

In Fig. 4i the smoke discharge orifice is auto# matically controlled by a simple check valve 11, hinged at l2, so that it closes the orifice when suction is exerted through the tube, in the act of drawingsmoke into the smokers mouth, and opens when smoke is expelled from the smokers mouth through the tube..

In the Fig. Il structure the cigarette-receiv ing part of the device is made in two parts, united along the parting line 14; to facilitate manufacture, in Aparticular the fitting of the check-'valve to the other parts.

In Fig. 5 the smoke discharge orifice issupposed to be a nasal opening, and the checkvalve, controlling the inner end of this orifice, is a flexible piece of rubber 15 fastened at its edges inside kand near the outer end of a mouth-like passage 16, the rubber piece bey"ing of siich size and flexibility that it may assume the reverse positions shown in full lines and dotted lines respectively in Fig.. 5,

accordingly as there is suction or outward pressure in the tube. In the one case the tongue is drawn back into opening 15, closing off theorifice 9; in the other case .the tongue is projected out ofthe mouth opening 16, simultaneously with the opening of and discharge of smoke from, the nasal opening 9. Atall times, of course, the mouth 16 is closed against outlet of smoke or inlet fof air. The check-valve may of course be in the. form of a'movable ear, or nose, or eye-brow,jand the atube, a terminal havin device may be furnished with .one or more of such movable members lwhich do not have .the check-valve function. In Fig. v6 I show the head of the device rovided Vwith two diverging cigarette soc ets, both ,in communicationwith thev tube.l This arrangement may be used with or without the separate smoke orifice, check-valve, &c.

Inasmuch as many changes couldbe made in the above. construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of my in- I vention .could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the/ above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

It is also tobe understood that the language4 'used in the following claims is intended to cover all 'the generic. and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope. of the inventionwhich, as a matter of language, vmight be said to fall therebetween.

An .article of manufacture comprising socket for receiving a c arge of smokable material, said socket being in communica` tion with thetube,I the terminal member being provided with a smoke discharge passage opening into the tube, the exterior of the terminal member4 being provided with a representation of a face having facial orifices, the outer end of the smoke dlscharge coinciding 'With a facial orifice.

2. An article of manufacture comprising `a tube, a terminal havin 'formed therein a socket for receiving a c arge of smokable material, said socket being in communication with the tube, the terminal being provided wi-th'asmoke discharge passage opening into thel tube, the exterior of the-ter- 'a tube, a terminal havin formed therein a valve member being visible from the exterior fof the terminal member and constituting partof the design.
