Application April 18, 1938, Serial No. 202,796
lClaim.
The invention relates to a cigar or cigarette holder and more especially to a flexible sheet cellulose mouth tip or piece for cigars or cigarettes.
The primary obj ect of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the same is of a exible character for application to a cigar or cigarette and is adapted for fitting therewith at the factory when making the cigars or cigarettes to' assure the maintenance of the latter dry and without the yielding of tobacco into the mouth of a smoker as well as preventing the `scorching or burning of the tongue or lips of such smoker resultant from hot smoke being drawn into the mouth during the smoking period.
Another object of the invention is the provision ofa device of this character, wherein the construction thereof is novel in its entirety to assure convenient vand comfortable smoking of a cigar or cigarette and absorbing nicotine to relieve the same from the mouth of the smoker as Well as enabling the greater part of the cigarette or cigar to be smoked without injury by burning of the lips or the mouth of the smoker,
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and effective in operation, and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a side elevation of the device constructed in accordance with the invention applied to a cigar.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure l looking in the direction of the arrows.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates general1y.a cigar and B the tip or holder, respectively, the latter being adaptable for use with cigarettes and will be hereinafter fully described.
The tip or holder B comprises an oter shell 5, preferably made from flexible sheet cellulose although it maybe made from any suitable noninammable material of required thickness to assure flexibility and lightness in weight and .this
' shell for a major portion of its length is out-- wardly ilared while the minor portion is contracted for effecting a mouth-engaging end 6, the outwardly flared portion being fitted interiorly thereof with a thimble-like body 'l which 'in cross sectional diameter for the major extent thereof is less than the cross sectional diameter of the flared portion of the shell so as to provide therebetween and lnteriorly of the shell a flow space 8. 'I'his thimble-like body 'l accommodates at the open end 9 thereof a terminal cap II fitted upon the butt end I2 of the cigar A, the opposite end I0 of the thimble-like body being closed.` 'I'his capV II is provided with a central outlet aperture or opening I3 and the cross sectional diameter of such cap is less than the cross sectional diameter of the body 'I to provide a space I4 therebetween. This cap is ad-4 hesively `secured to the Wrapper of the cigar A or to that of the cigarette (not shown) and lis flxedly seated against a shoulder I5 'instruck from the body 1 at the open end 9 thereof while beyond this shoulder I5 is an annular extension I6 adhesively secured to the Wrapper of said cigar and similarly the 'outer shell 5 at the open end accommodating the cigar A has formed therein a shoulder I'I instruck for the seating of the annular extension I6 against the same while beyond the said shoulder I1 is an annular extension i8 adhesively fastened to the wrapper of the cigar A.
The body I interiorly of the shell S'between it and the cap II has formed therein in proximity to its open end circumferentially arranged laterally opening holes or perforations I9, these being uniformly spaced from each other.` Thus-the smoke drawn from the cigar A will pass outwardly through the hole I3 into the space It taking a circuitous course for delivery through the apertures or holes I9 and thence into the space 8 and finally passing outwardly into the mouth of a smoker through the mouth-engaging end 6 of ,the device.
Within the space I4 between the body 1 and the cap I I is a, ller 20 of cotton or other absorbent material functioning as a filter for the smoke when drawn into the tip or holder to remove nicotine therefrom or other foreign substance and the smoke in its travel within the said'tip or holder becomes cooled before reception in the mouth of a smoker using the said tip or holder so thatl there is no liability of the scorching or burning of the tongue or the lips or the interior of the mouth of such smoker through the use of the holder or tip.
It is preferable to assemble and aiflx the tip or holder to the cigar or cigarette at the factory Where the same are made and to have the tip or holder a permanently attached part thereof. However, the tip or holder can be used as a separable structure in its association with a cigar or cigarette and in this latter instance being devoid of the adhesive connection thereto.
The moisture from the mouth of a smoker when using the tip or holder will not ilow into the body of the cigar or cigarette and thus the same will be sustained dry so that it may be smoked to almost the very end thereof 'and without the yielding of tobacco juice resultant from moisture being transmitted to the tobacco of such cigar or cigarette.
The outwardly ared portion of the shell 5 tapers in the direction of the mouth 6 and similarly the taper of the body 'l and the cap is in this direction, the shell being neat and attractive in its appearance and of streamline contour.
It is preferable that the holder in its entirety be made from paper thickness cellulose.
What is claimed is:
A built-on tip for a smokable article, comprising an outer iiexible shell having a major outwardly ared portion and a restricted mouthengaging minor portion fully open at opposite ends, a Ilexible thimble-like body of less size than the shell telescoped into the major outwardly ared portion of the same and forming a ow space therebetween, the said thimble-like body being provided with side perforations. a iiexible cap snugly and fully embracing a tip end oi' the smokable article and telescoped within the thimble-like body tor a distance thereof, the said cap being formed with a central aperture for communication with a space between the said cap and the thimble-like body, and inwardly directed shoulders on the shell and 'thimble-like body, respectively, for permanent intertting of the cap in the said body and the latter in the said shell and also having contact with the smokable article outwardly with respect to said cap.
