It is also an object of this invention to provide a buckle of the character described composed of two main parts, each of said main parts being stamped or struck out from single blanks, thus making them simple and inexpensive to manufacture.

These and other objects,the nature of the invention, its combination, its COIIIPOSltlOD,

and arrangements of parts will be clearly understood from a reading of the accompanying thereof.

Figure 1 represents a plan view of the double back band buckle of the invention.

Figure 2 shows a modification of the invention providing single back band gripping elements.

It Will be understood that I do not desire to limit the application of this invention to the particular modifications set out herein in illustration, and any change or changes in material and structure may be made within the scope of the invention.

Referring to the drawings in detaihit will be seen that a generally rectangular plate 5 having rectangular recesses out in the opposite ends thereof. Cut or punched through this central portion thereof is a rectangular recess 7 having its ends and sides parallel to the ends and sides of the drawings and the description blank. 'Near the edges of the longitudinal sides 8 and 9 of the blank are cut or punched long slots 10 and 11 extending substantially the length of said longitudinal sides, adapted to receive the back band and retain the same against widthdrawal.

Holes 12 are provided in the blank to accommodate rivets or the like for attaching the buckle to the leather or other back band or to a wagon breeching. immediately below the lower slot 10 in the plate is a pivot 13 on which is pivoted a trace carrier hook 14 comprising an irregular, symmetrical plate adapted to be pivoted on said pivot 13, the central portion of said plate being punched out to provide a hook l5 and ears 16 for mounting and retaining one of the links of the trace chain and for preventing the accidently dislodgment of the chain therefrom.

The pivoted mounting of the trace carrier provides for the free movement of the chain without undue strain upon the buckle and to prevent the chafing of the animal upon which said back band buckle is mount-- I ed.

A retaining bar 17 is punched out from the part above the top slot 11 and provides a retaining means against which the bottom of the trace carrying assembly slides in its pivoting motion and the bar 18 bounding the bottom of the recess 7 and the back retaining member through which the assembly 14 slides, said assembly being retained by the ends of said bar 17 from complete rota- .tion on its pivot.

The link of the trace chain is required to be entered upon the hook 15 in endwise manner and when slipped down upon said hook is retained against dislodgment from said hook by the ears l6 projectinginwardly from the plate 14:. v

V modification consists of a plate 19 having a square bottom and a curved top portion having a pivot hole 20 and laterally extending arms 21 formed integral with the body 19 and right angularly projecting hooks 22 mounted adjacent the end edges of said arm 21. Like the trace carrying hook assembly shown in Figure 3 and operated as the device in Figure 1, the -modification of the device of Figure 4: is adapted to be pivoted at 13 and the trace chain link seated in the hook 22 and it otherwise functions similarly to the trace carrier hook assembly already described.

I claim:

1. A back band buckle comprising a rectangularplate, parallel longitudinal slots near each longitudinal edge of said plate, a large cut-out portion centrally disposed in said plate, a trace carrying hook of rough- 1y triangular form pivoted at its apex to one side of the plate adjacent one longitudinal edge of said cut-out portion, and a bar struck out from the opposite longitudinal edge portion of said plate adjacent said cutout portion adapted to engage the lower end of said trace carrying hook assembly and to prevent the complete rotation ofthe same.

2. A back band buckle of the type described, comprising a rectangular plate having spaced parallel longitudinal slots near its upper longitudinal edge, a wide cut-out portion disposed longitudinally below said slot, a bar struck out laterally from the lower edge portion of the plate, a substantially triangular plate constituting a trace carrying assembly, a pivot secured centrally on the upper edge of the wide cut-out portion adapted to pivot said trace carrying assembly, a hook'cut-out of said assembly, and ears cut out of said assembly and associated with said hook to retain a trace chain on the hook, the pivotal motion of said assembly being restricted by said bar struck out from the bottom edge of the" plate.
