It is a purpose of my invention to provide .5 a base frame forelevator machines that will not transmit vibration of the motor or other frameworkof a building or are mounted in some mannerupon theframework of a building so that vibration set up by the motor causes undesirable vibration of the building.

It is a further purpose of the invention to .25 provide a base member for the motor, the traction sheave,"the brake and the reduction gearing, which is common to all these. parts, said base member being preferably made ofa single piece comprisinga metal'casting and 30 being preferably provided with upstanding portions which form bearing supports for the motordriven shaft and traction sheave, and
' one of which also forms a portion of the housing for the reduction gearing.
Other objects and advantages of the inven'-' tion willappear as the description of the ac companying drawings proceeds. However, I desire tohave it distinctlyvunderstood that I do not intend to limit myself to'the exact details shown or described, but that I intend to include as part of my invention all such obvious changes and modifications of parts as would occur to a person skilled in this art and as would fall within the scope of the claims. y

'My improved base member is mounted on any suitable support such. as the parallel beams which may beT-beams and may form a portion of the building frame in i at... on the line which the elevator is located. Said? base member preferablycomprises a longitudinally extending arm 11 and a laterally extending portion 12at one endof the arm 11. 'Mou'nted upon the end of the arm 11 remotefrom the laterally extending portion 12 of the frame is the motor 13 which is provided with feet'14 which are supported upon the longitudinally spaced upper flanges 15-and 16 of the arm 11.. -A brakemechanismlS ismounted between the motor. 13 and the laterally extending por-. tion 12 of the frame inthe usual manner, saidfbrake mechanism being mounted upon the supporting members 19 which are secured to the laterally extending flanges 20 and 21 cured thereto in any suitable manner as by means of the securing members 22 and being Y The=arm .11 of the framework is preferably provided with upper and lower flanges 245 on thearm 11"v of thebasemember, being see 7 and 25 which are narrower than the laterally 1 extending fianges-15,; 16, .20 and 21, and a web portion 26 between the upper and lower flanges 24 and25 thus producing an integral I-beam-like base member. The web. portion is preferably provided with aplurality of openings 27 therein, said openings being of such a shape and size as to occupy a-large portion of the space between the-laterally extending, strengthening webs 28, 29, 30 and 31 which are alignedsubstantially with the flanges 15, '16, 20 and 21 respectively. The strengthening web portions 28, 29, 30 and 31 increase in width fromthg; flanges 15, 16, 20'
and 21 to'the flange 25, merging with said flange at the lower ends thereof. The web portion 26 is provided with thickened portions or ribs 32 surrounding the openings 2? to strengthen said web portions adjacent said openings. The lower flange of the arm 11 is preferably provided with thickened portions forming transversely extending ribs 33, 34, 35 and 36 which align substantially with the flanges 15, 16, 20, and 21 respectively, thus providing spaces 37 between the flange 25 and the upper flange ofthe beam 10 upon which the arm 11 is mounted, aligning substantially with the openings 27 in the web 26. The weight of the motor 13 and the brake mechanism 18 isthus directly supported upon the beam 10, but
a very small portion of the weightof these parts being applied to the web portions where theopenings therein occur. It has been found that with this arrangement the tendency of the vibrations to travel in the member 11 is broken up so. that substantially none of the vibration of the motor 13 or the other moving parts carried by the member 11 is transmitted to the beam 10. and consequently not to the building.
The laterally extending portion 12 of the base member is made integral with the arm 11 and comprises a pair of transversely extending members having the upper flanges 38, the lower flanges 39. and the web portions between'said flanges. The web portions 40 of the transversely extending members forming a part of the laterally extending portion 12 of the base member are preferably imperforate and are connected at the outer ends thereof by means of a longitudinally ex tending member having a web portion 41 and the upper-flange 42 and lower flange 43. The web portion 41 is provided with an elongated opening 44 therein, similar to the openings 27 and is surrounded by a thickened portion or strengthening rib 45. The inner ends of the transversely extending members are preferably connected to each other and with the arm 11 of the. base member by means of a longitudinally extending portion having a web portion 46 provided with an elongated opening 47 and surrounded by a thickened portion or strengthening rib 48 and having furthermore the upper flange 49 and the lower flange 50. The outer end of the laterally extending portion 14 of the base member has .a bearing standard 51 integral therewith, said base member being provided with strengthening ribs 53 spaced. slightly from the. corners of the frame and in alignment substantially with the central portions of the lower ends 52 of the member 51. Said bear ing support is provided with a bearing por tion 56 forthe traction sheave shaft 57. The laterally extending portion 12 of the frame is preferably provided with thickened portionsor feet 58 substantially in vertical alignio-ad, especially ment with the ribs 53, thus providing a space at 59 between said feet. The web portion 41 thus carries but a very slight portion of the at the opening 44 thereof, the major portion of the load being transferred directly to the beam 10 through the reinforced corner portions of'the base.
Extending upwardly from the portion of the base that connects the laterally extending portion 12 thereof and the longitudinally extending arm 11 are the obliquely extending frame portions 60 and 61 providing an opening 62 that is substantially aligned with theopening 4"! in the web portion 46. The lower ends of said frame portions 60 and 61 are integral with the flange 49 and have the thickened port1ons'65 of the flange 50 sub.-
stantially aligned therewith so that the major portion of the. load supported by thevertically extending frame member thus formed is transferred to the supporting surface with which the feet engage, through said feet, and but a very small portion of the. load is carried by the web 46 where the opening 47 occurs therein. Surmounting the members 60 and 61 is a housing and bearing member 63 having the strengthening. ribs 64 and the flan" s 66 to which bearing members for the motor driven shaft are secured. Cooperating with the membe 63-is cap member 67 forming therewith a. reduction gear housing said members 63 and 67 being provided respectively with hearing portions 69 and 70 for the shaft 57. The usual traction sheave 71 ismounted on theshaft- 57 in the usual manner and is driven in'the usual manner through the reduction gearing contained in the. housing formed by the members 63 and 67.
i It has been found that with the arrangement described, substantially all the vibra-.
tion of the motor 13 and the other rotating parts carried by the angular basemember, which, it will be noted, is substantially L- shaped.v is eliminated by providing the openings 27, 44, and 47 in the web portions of-the base member as described above, these openings preventing the transmission of the vibration of the said parts to the supporting members 10. Atthe same time, due to the provision of the stren thening ribs and strengthening webs,.the strength of the base member as a' whole is not materially affected by the provision of said openings.

In combination with spaced beams, a base frame comprising a longitudinal body member supported wholly by one of the beams and having an integral, outriding, lat eral extension at one end of the body member. supported at'its free end on the other beam.
2. A base frame of the character described including a web having top and bottom located between said openings and downwardly extending transverse longitudinally v spaced ribs integral with the web and bottom flange in substantial alignment with the'riser webs for transferring weight of the frame and its load through the solid portions of said body web and through the riser webs and ribs to asupporting'base. f
3. A base frame of the character described including a vertical web, having spaced openings and lateral bottom flanges, and having longitudinally spaced top flanges extending laterally from the solid portions of the web between the openings, riser webs integral with the body web and the top and bottom flanges, and longitudinally spaced transverse ribs on the body web and bottom flanges beneath the riser webs.
4. A base frame for elevator machines comprising a single metal casting including a longitudinal arm adapted to support the motor and the brake mechanism of said machine,
tegral with the bearing member, and a bearing 1 support extending upwardly from the outer end of the lateral portion and integra therewith.
6. In abase frame for elevator mechanism, a base compmsmg a single piece of material and including a longitudinal arm compris- I ing an I-beam-l1ke member and a lateral arm comprising spaced I-beam-like members,
I lateral riser webs integral with the arms, and
means including footing members mounted on the arms in substantial alignment with the riser webs for supporting machine elements, said arms having openings located between the riser webs.
7 A base frame of the character described including a web having lateral top and bottom flanges and spaced openings, lateral riser webs integral with the body web and flanges and located between said openings, and
means for supporting machine elements in- A cluding a pair of footing members extending upwardly from said top flanges in substantial alignment with adjacent riser webs and integral with said flanges and webs. I

A base frame for elevator mechanism side forsupporting the motor and the brake mechanism of'the elevatormechanism, a pair of spaced lateral arms at one end of the longitudinal arms and integral therewith comprising Webs having integral top and bottom flanges, a web integral with the outer ends of the lateral arms connecting the same andhaving lateral integral top and bottom flanges;
and riser webs on said arms integral withthe same for reinforcing the flanges-to provide rigid portions, and reduction gear and sheave supporting members extending upwardly from said rigidportions and integral therewith.
