My invention relates to four wheel railway car trucks and more particularlyto a type of such truck wherein the side frame is of beam type and supports a loading member also of beamlike form. In a more or less similar well known type of truck the side frame supports a loading member in the form of a flexible semi-elliptic spring which is superposedthereon.
An object of my invention is such a car truck wherein relative movement between the sprung and unsprung members will be afforded between the two members .of the truck side structure, vone of which may be superposed upon the other in any one of several modifications which I have herein set forth.

My invention comprehends various arrangements wherein said supported beam may -be afforded one or more tilagonally arranged frictional surfaces at each end thereof suitably arranged for engagement with complementary frictional surfaces carried upon the supporting side frame.

Describing the structure in greater detail and referring more particularly to the modification shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, the truck striicture comprises the bolster 2 of well known form having the center plate 4 and the side bearing 6 for abutment with aside bearing member on the supported car body. The said bolster has an end structure of bifurcated form comprising the jaw members 8 and I0, each spanning the top meiiiber H of the, siddframe istructure generally indicated at I2. The jaw end ,of the bolster is seated as at onthe member and has in-- means of connection with spaced wheel and axle assemblies (not shown). The side frame has the conventional brake hanger brackets 32, 82 integrally formed with the bottom member l8 of -the side frame and conveniently located between the wheels at either side ofthe bolster 2. At the middle of the side frame l8 the side walls 28 and 28 are extended vertically to form inboard and outboard pedestal guides 34 and 3lirespectively, said pedestal guides being reinforced by the vertical flanges 38, 38 and at their upper as at 48 and 42 (Figure 3) for the top beam member II. The "said top member ll may be supported at either side of said guides by resilient means diagrammatically indicated at 44, 44, said resilient meansbeing seated as at 48 on the bottom wall 20 of the member I8 and projecting through openings 48, 48 formed in the top wall 22 thereof to afford seats as at 50, 50 for the member II. The shape of the end portion of the member I08 is best shown in the side elevation of Figure 5 presenting fiat surfaces I44, I44 converging in a downward direction for engagement with and compression between the friction blocks I40, I40.
The end of the member I08 is closely confined by abutment as at I46, I46 with the side walls of the member IIO, guide pads I41 accommodating this condition, and by endabutment as at I48 with lugs. In this modification space is afforded for expansion of the resilient members I38 between the walls I30 and I32 (Figure 6) and in an upward direction as seen from a consideration of Figurer5. When relativemovement occurs between the top member I08'and the bottom member I I0 of the side frame as by compression of the springs at II2, the V-shaped end of the member I08 will be forced downwardly between the wedge The box-like structure is.
blocks I40, I40, thus urging them apart and compressing the resilient members I38, I38 thus developing frictional absorption between said blocks and said V-shaped end.
In the modification shown in Figure 7 the top side frame member 202 is generally similar to those described for the previous modifications except for the end portion thereof more particularly described hereafter. The lower side frame member 204 is substantially identical with that shown in the modification of Figures 1, 2 and 3, having the well 206 adjacent the journal box 208 defined by the bottom shelf 2I0 reinforced by the vertical rib 2 I2 and the widened side walls of the bottom member 204. Within the well 206 may be seated at block of resilient material 2 I 4 in abutment against the side wall of the journal box and forming a seat at its opposite side as at 2I6 for the wedge block 2I8, said wedge block having a fiat surface in abutment with said resilient member and a flat bottom seat on the shelf 2I0 and presenting on its top surface a diagonal friction face for engagement as at 220 with the complementary face formed on the V-shaped end 222 of themember 202. The end of the member 202 is closely guided between the side walls of the member 204, guide pads 224 and 225 being formed respectively on said top member 202 and on the side walls of the member 204 for that purpose and the extremity of said member 202 has abutment as at 226 against guide lugs formed on the walls of the member 204. When relative movemen occurs between the top and bottom members 202 and 204, frictional absorption will be developed at 220 and under certain conditions at 226 as will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
The modification shown in Figure 8 differs'from that shown in Figure 7 principally in the form of the top member of the side frame and the manner in which the ends thereof are supported from the bottom member 304'thereof. The said bottom member is substantially identical with that described in the modification shown in Figures 4 to 6. The said bottom member 304 has the bottom wall 306, the top wall -308 downwardly offset as at 3I0 to the shelf 3I2 which merges-as at 3I4 with the side wall of the journal box 3I6. The said side 'wall of the journal box together with the side walls of the member 304 and the transverse wall 3I8 define the pocket 320 within which may be seated the resilient member 322 having abutment as at 324 with the wedge block 326, said wedge block presenting opposite the side wall of the journal box a diagonally arranged friction surface for engagement as at 328 with an inwardly directed complementary friction surface formed on the end of the member 302. The end of the member 302 is thus of V-shaped form having the vertical end wall in abutment as at 330 with theside wall of the journal box so that the v-shaped end of the member 302 is confined between the side wall of the journal box and the wedge block 326. Downward movement of the upper member 302 will thus force the wedge block 326 away from the journal box, thus compressin the resilient member 322 and developing friction between the V-shaped end of the top member 302 and the opposing sidewall of the journal box and the wedge 326. Under certain conditions the friction may be developed entirely between the member 302 and the wedge block 326 when there is no relative end play between the top and bottom members of the side frame. The top member 302 is closely confined between the side walls of the bottom member 304 as described for said. superposed member and having thrust previous modifications and in the modification now under consideration the resilient. member 322 is afforded expansion upwardly and laterally.
It is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited by the exact embodiments .of the device shown which are merely by way of illustration and not limitation as various and other forms of the device will, of course, be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the.
spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim: 1. In a railway car truck, a side frame com.- prising a beam member of box section having integral journal boxes and pockets adjacent said journal boxes between the side walls of said member, a longitudinally extending rigid member superposed on said beam member having-its ends seated in said pockets, pedestal means formed on said beam member and serving as guide means for'said superposed member, resilient means interposed between said beam member and said superposed member at intermediate spaced points, resilient pads within said pockets supporting the ends of said superposed member, a loadcarrying member seated upon said superposed member and having thrust means engaging opposite sides thereof, and thrust means on said superposed member preventing longitudinal displacement of said load carrying member.
2. In a'railway car truck, a. composite side frame comprising a beam member of general box section, journal boxes integrally formed at the ends thereof, pockets between the side walls thereof adjacent said journal boxes, friction means supported in said pockets, resilient means said beam member comprising journal boxes integrally formed at the ends thereof and deepened side walls forming pockets adjacent said journal boxes, friction wedge blocks resiliently seatedin I said pockets, a loading member having downwardly projecting V-shaped ends with friction surfaces engaged between-said blocks, other resilient means supporting said loading member on said beam member at spaced points intermediate their ends, and guide means on one of said mem-' bers having abutment with the other thereof intermediate said pockets.
4. In a railway car truck, a side frame comprising a beam member of box section having integral .journal boxes and pockets adjacent said journal boxes between the side walls of sa d member, a longitudinally extending ri id memb=r superposed on said beam member having its ends seated in said pockets, pedestal means formed on said beam member and serving as guide means for said superposed member, resilient means in terposed between said beam member andsaid superposed member at intermediate spaced points, resilient pads positibned between the ends of said superposed member and said beam member, and a load carrying member seated upon means engaging opposite sides thereof.
5. In a four wheel railway truck, a side frame comprising a beam member of box section, said beam member having integrally formed journal boxes and deepened side walls forming pockets adjacent said boxes, frictional means and a resilient pad seated in operative arrangement within said pockets, a superposed member having wedge-like end portions downwardly projecting into said pockets for engagement with and support on said frictional means, and other I resilient means interposed at spaced points between-said members, one of said members having pedestal means formed at an intermediate point vserving as guide means for the other thereof. I

In a side frame structure for a railway car, top and bottom beam members of box section, said bottom member having integral journal boxes, the inner walls of which merge with the bottom wall of said bottom member adjacent the bottoms of said boxes, pockets formed in said bottom member between the lateral walls thereof andadjacent said boxes, friction means within said pockets, said top member having end por- 'tion's resiliently supported in said pockets for frictional engagement with said means, said re-,
silient support comprising-a pad of resilient material in abutment with said bottom member and said friction means, resilient means interposed between said members at intermediate points, and lateral guide means on said members.
7. In a four wheel truck, a side frame com prising a beam'of box section with integral journal boxes at the ends thereof and pockets adjacent said journal boxes between the side walls of said beam, frictional means resiliently supported in said pockets, said resilient support comprising blocks of resilient material compressed between said frictional means and certain walls of said pockets, a member superposed on said beam and having its ends downwardly projectinginto said pockets with frictional surfaces engaging said frictional means, other resilient means interposed between said beam and said member at spaced points between said packets,
and pedestal means formed on-said beam intermediate the ends thereof afi'ording inboard and outboard guide means for said member.'
8. In a railway car truck,- a composite side Iframe comprising a beam member of general box section, journal boxes integrally formed at the ends thereof, pockets between the side walls there of adjacent said journal boxes, friction means and resilient means supported in said pockets with certain ofsaid means abutting certain vertical walls of said pockets, a loading member superposed on said beam member and having downwardly projecting ends received in said pockets with frictional surfaces in engagement with said friction means, and other resilient means interposed between said members at spaced points between said pockets.
9. In a side structure for a railway car truck, a beam member of box section comprising integrally formed journal boxes and pockets adjacent said boxes between the side wals thereof, resilient means and wedge blocks seated in said pockets with said resilient means compressed between said wedge blocks and certain walls of saidpockets, a loading member having end portions with friction surfaces in' abutment with said wedge blocks within said' pockets, other resilient means interposed at spaced points he'- tween said members, and pedestal guide means formed on one of said members intermediate the ends thereof for inboard and outboard engagement with the other of said members.
10. In a railway car truck, a composite side structure comprising top and bottom beam members of general box section, said bottom member comprising journal boxes integrally formed at the ends thereof and deepened sidewalls forming pockets adjacent said journal boxes, friction wedge blocks resiliently seated in said pockets, said top member having downwardly projecting V-shaped ends with friction surfaces engaged between said blocks, and other resilient means supporting said top member on said bottom member at spaced points intermediate their ends.
11. In a railway car truck, a side structure having top and bottom beam-like members of box section, said bottom member having upwardly opening pockets adjacent the ends thereof, a plurality of wedge blocks resiliently seated in each of said pockets, said top member having wedge-like ends downwardly projecting into said pockets in frictional engagement between said wedge blocks respectively, a plurality of resilient members interposed at spaced points between said members, and means on said members affording lateral guide means therefor.
12. In a side frame structure for a railway car, top and bottom members of box section, said bottom member having integral journal. boxes, the inner walls of which merge with the bottom wall of said bottom member adjacent the bottoms of said boxes, pockets formed in said bottom member between the lateral walls thereof and adjacent said boxes, friction means within said pockets presenting friction surfaces, said top member having end portions resiliently supported in said pockets in frictional engagement with said surfaces, said resilient support including r'esilient means operatively arranged with said friction means within said pockets, and other resilient means interposed between said members at intermediate points. 3

In a railway car truck, a side structure having top and bottom beam members, said bottom member having at the ends thereof integral journal boxes and pockets formed adjacent said boxes, wedge blocks resiliently supported in each of said pockets, said top member having V-shaped end portions received respectively in said pockets between said blocks for frictional engagement therewith, spaced resilient means interposed between said members, and guide means on one of said members affording lateral abutment for the other thereof.
14. In a railway car truck, a side structure having top and bottom beam-like members of box section, said bottom member having upwardly opening pockets adjacent the ends thereof, a plurality of wedge blocks resiliently seated in each of said pockets, said to member having wedge-like ends downwardly projecting into said pockets in frictional engagement between said Wedge blocks respectively, and a plurality of resilient means interposed at spaced points between said members.
15. In a four wheel truck, a side frame comprising a beam of box section with integral journal boxes at the ends thereof and pockets adjacent said journal boxes between the side walls of said beam, frictional means resiliently supported in said pockets, said resilient support including resilient pads compressed between said frictional means and certain walls of said pockets,
a member superposed on said beam and having its ends downwardly projecting into said pockets with frictional surfaces engaging said frictional means, and other resilient means interposed between the said beam and said member at spaced points between said pockets.
16; In a four wheel railway truck, a side frame comprising a beam member of generally box section, said beam member having integrally formed journal boxes and deepened side walls forming pockets adjacent said boxes, frictional means resiliently positioned within said pockets from certain vertical walls thereof, a loading member having end portions downwardly projecting into said pockets for engagement with and support on said frictional means, and other resilient means interposed at spaced points between said members.
17. In a side frame for a railway car, a beam member of box section comprising integrally formed journal boxes and pockets adjacent said boxes between the side walls thereof, resilient means and wedge blocks seated in said pockets, said resilient means being compressed between said blocks and certain walls. forming said pockets, a loading member having end portions with friction surfaces in abutment with said wedge blocks within said pockets, and other resilient means interposed at spaced points between said members.
18. In a railway car truck, a side structure having top and bottom beam members, said bottom member having at the ends thereof integra journal boxes and pockets formed adjacent said boxes, wedge blocks resiliently supported in each of said pockets, said top member having V-shap-ed end portions received respectively in said pockets between said blocks for frictional engagement therewith, and spaced resilient means interposed between said members.
19. In a railway car truck, aside frame structure having top and bottom beam-like members of box section, said bottom member having upwardly opening pockets adjacent the ends thereof, a plurality of resilient pads seated in each of said pockets, wedge blocks between said resilient pads, said top member having wedge-like ends downwardly projecting into said pockets in frictional engagement between said wedge blocks respectively, and a plurality of resilient members interposed at intermediate spaced points between said members.
20. In a railway car truck, a side frame structure having top and bottom beam-like members of box section, said bottom member having upwardly opening pockets adjacent the ends thereof, resilient members abutting lateral walls of said pockets, friction blocks interposed between said resilient members, said top member having wedge-like ends downwardly projecting into said pockets in frictional engagement with said friction blocks respectively, and a plurality of resilient members interposed at intermediate spaced points between said beam-like members.
21. In a railway car truck, a side frame structure having top and bottom beam members, said bottom member havingat the ends thereof integral journal boxes and pockets formed adjacent said boxes, spaced resilient members seated at opposite ends of said pockets, wedge blocks therebetween, said top member having V-shaped end portions received respectively in said pockets between said blocks for frictional engagement therewith, and spaced resilient means interposed between said beam members.
22. In a railway car truck, a side frame structure having top and bottom beam members, said bottom member having at the ends thereof integral journal boxes and pockets formed adjacent said boxes, wedge blocks and resilient pads seated in. operative arrangement within said pockets, said top member having V-shaped end portions received respectively in said pockets between said blocks for frictional engagement therewith, and spaced resilient means interposed between said members.
23. In a'railway car truck, a side frame structure having top and'bottom beam members, said bottom member having at the ends thereof integral journal boxes and pockets formed adjacent said boxes, wedge blocks resiliently supported on each of said pockets, said top member having tapering end portions received respectively in said pockets between said blocks for frictional engagement therewith, said resilient support being disposed to resist movement of said blocks away from each other, and spaced resilient means interposed between said members.
24. In a railway car truck, a side frame comprising a bottom member of box section with integrally formed journal boxes, pockets in said bottom member adjacent to said boxes, a wedge block resiliently'seated in each pocket and presenting a diagonal friction face opposite the adjacent box, a top member having a downwardly projecting wedge-like end portion interposed between said wedge block and the adjacent journal box for frictional engagement therewith, and other resilient means interposed at spaced points between said members.
25. In arailway car truck, a side frame comprising a bottom member of box section with integrally formed journal bottom member adjacent to said boxes, friction means in said pockets presenting diagonal wedge faces opposite said boxes, resilient means compressed between said friction means and certain walls of said pockets for frictional engagement with said friction means, and a plurality of resilent members interposed at spaced points between said top and bottom members.
26. In a railway car truck, a side frame comprising a bottom member of box section with integrally formed journal boxes, pockets in said bottom member adjacent to said boxes, wedge means in said pockets, resilient means compressed between said wedge means and said Journal boxes, a top member having a wedge-like end portion received within said pockets and engaging said wedge means, and other resilient means positioned between said members at spaced points.
