This invention relates ,to combined striking castings used in connection w1th draft gear for railway cars and, more particu,
combined castingwhichl is formed with portions serving, respectively, as a coupler stop vor striking ,casting and a sill tie member'or coupler carrier iron and provided with means for connecting the same with the associated center sills of a car, said carrier iron portion being formed for the application of a replaceable wear or carrier block.
An object of my invention is the provision of a combined casting formed with striking and carrier iron portions, the carrier iron portion being formed with a pocket or indentation in its top surface for receiving and holding in place a renewable carrier block whereby the carrier iron portion of the casting is prevented from receivingvwear from the coupler.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a combined casting adapted for connection with the underframe of a car and formed with coupler striking and carrier iron portions, the casting adjacent said carrier iron portion being formed with an aperture through which a carrier block may be inserted transversely and positioned in place on the top of the carrier iron portion which is so constructedvthat said block is securely held in place.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a combined casting adapted or connection with the center sills of a car andl formed with a coupler striking portion and a carrier i-ron portion, said carrier iron portion being formed with upstanding flanges or ribs extending along the same for holding in place an associated carrier block, the carrier vblock being preferably formed with a lug or lugs cooperating with orrengaging under the corresponding portion or portions on the casting for securing said block in place, retaining means being provided, it desired, for preventing undesired removal or ioss on said block, said retaining means being adaptedlfor extending through registering portions of the casting and block or for engaging corresponding portions of said members to secure the same together.v

Referring to the drawings in detail, like bodinient of my invention illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3, there is shown a combined casting 1 formed with a coupler striking portion 2, a coupler carrier iron portion 3, and rearwardly extending ear or web portions l preferably lying on the outside of and adjacent to web portions 5 o f the center sills (i of the car. rlhe web portions d are preferably connected to the adjacent ends of the center or draft sills (i by a plurality of rivets 7 andare also preferably bifurcated or formed as upper and lower sections 8 and 9, respectively, leaving slots 10 therebetween, said slots preferably registering with the slots 11 provided in the associated center sills 6 for the reception of a usual form of draft key 12,
For reinforcing the slotted portions of the center sill webs 5, the slotted portions of the webs or ears l of the combined casting 1 are preferably formed with outwardly extending rib or flange portions 13. portions of which preferably taper and` gradually merge into the web 28. Said web 28, forwardly of the center sills 6, preferably extends transversely beyond said center sills 6 and the overhanging portions 31 of which are preferably braced with respect to the web portions 4 by means of transversely extending substantially vertical rib or flange portions 32, preferably extending substantially the full height of the combined easting. These flange portions 32 are, in turn, braced to the web portions l by preferably triangular gusset portion. 33 and the corresponding portions of the web 28.
Between the center sills and rearwardly of the ends thereof, the web 28 is narrowed in width so as to extend between said sills without intersecting the saine and is positioned so that the top thereof is substantially flush with the tops of the sills. This construction makes it possible to firmly connect the end sill and center sills while providing for the secure connection between the combined casting 1, the cover plate 2G and the center sills G. The narrowed portion of the web 28 is preferably extended for a substantial distance to underlie the end sill 27 and, as will be apparent from a consideration of Figure 2 particularly, it preferably extends beyond the ears or web portions 4 of the casting.
The couplerl carrier iron portion 3 of the combined castin is preferably formed with a substantially liorizontal web 3ft and upright stiifening flanges 35 positioned on opposite sides of said web, the major portion of said flanges depending below said web 34tbut the upper portions extending above said web, as 1llustrated particularly in Figure 2, so as to form ribs or flanges 3G with a depression or pocket 37 therebetween. Said pocket or depression 37 is adapted for r'eceiving a carrier block or wear element 38 which is adapted for insertionl in place tl rough one of the trai'isverse apertures 39 provided in the web portions el of the easting and, after insertion, is prevented from loss or undesired reinoval by theribs 36 along the sides thereof and corresponding ribs ai() at the ends of said block which define the extreme ends of the pocket. 37. ln the present embodiment` it will be apparent that the carrier bloelr 38 retained in place by being seated on the web 3i and being prevented from displacement; by the ribs 3b and ell), the weight of the said block the coupler engaging the upper surface yreef being relied upon to prevent upward oval i 'aid bloei; from the pocket 37.
rl`he carrier ble-el: 38 is preferably fornied with an upper web 41 and flanges depending along the sides thereof and joined at the ends by flanges 43 forming an inverted trough-shaped'constnnction which is preferably but not necessarily a casting. The intermediate portions of the flanges 42 may be braced and connected together by va depending flange or web 44. The carrier iron portion 3 underlying the carrier block 38 may be similarly constructed, that is, in addition tothe flanges 35, end flanges or webs 45 maybe provided as continuations of the ribs 40 and a bracing web or flange 46 may be provided directly beneath the flange or web 44. It will be apparent that, when in operative position, the stem of the coupler 24 restsV directly on the web 41 of the carrier block and the depending flanges 42,43 and 44 of said coupler Vblock rest directly on the web 34 of the carrier iron portion 3. On account of this construction, almost the entire wear from the coupler is taken upon the re laceable or renewable carrier block 38, w ich is relatively small' y and cheap, thereby protecting the relatively expensive combined casting l and greatly prolonging the life thereof. f
The vertical edges of the opening 47 through the casting 1 for the reception of the stem of the coupler 24 are preferably reinforced by inwardly extending flanges 48. In accordance with usual practice, the stem of the coupler 24 and the forward portion ofthe yoke-49 are supported in proper posi:
tion between the sills 6 by means of the key l2 extending through registering slots in the coupler and yoke and through the slots 10 in the combined casting, slots 19 in the cheek plates and the slots 11 in the center sills, as will be' understood. The coupler 24 is illustrated as of the swivel butt type described and claimed in my copending application Serial No. 5,763 liled January 30, 1925, which matured into Patenty No. 1,637,099 on July 26, 1927, in which theA butt thereof has a greater vertical dimension than the shank, although, as is obvious, any desiredtype vof coupler may be employed. The present construction, however, is admirably suited for a coupler of the swivelbutt type because it is especially adapted for receiving a large amount of wear from said coupler. The second or rear ke extends through the correspon ing slots in the cheek plates, center sills, yoke and front follower 50, as will be understood. f
Referring now particularly to the modification of my invention illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, the combined casting la, illustrated fragmentarily, may be substantially identical in construction with the combined casting 1 of the previous embodiment except that only one aperture 39a is provided for inserting the carrier block 38u in place. In lieu of an aperture 39a on the other side of the casting 1a, a smaller aperture 51 is provided, the upper limit of which is dened by a depending ledge portion 52 which overlies a lug portion53 from the carrier block 38a which extends outwardly through' the aperture 51 when the carrier block 38- is in place. If desired, the lug 53 is securely connected to the underlying outwardly extending flange 54 on the carrier portion 3n by means of a Cotter or other retaining means 55 which preferably extends through.v registering apertures 56 and 57 in the carrier block and carrier iron portion, respectively. The other end of the carrier block 38a is also preferably provided with an outstanding lug portion 58 which extends under the corresponding web portion 4a of the combined casting` and limits the upward movement of the carrier block with respect to said combined casting, and may also facilitate handling said carrier block.
Referring now to the further modification of my invention, illustrated in Figures 6, 7 and 8, a combined casting lb is fragmen tarily shown which? may be substantiallyy identical in construction with the casting 1 heretofore described but, as in the immediately preceding embodiment, the carrier block 38b is adapted for insertion in place from only one side of the casting 1 b through an aperture 39h. The web portion 4b at the opposite end of the casting, instead of being apertured, is formed of a contour, as illustrated particularly in Figure 6, providing an inwardly extending lug or web portion 59 overlying a pocket 60. A corresponding outwardly extending flange-or lip 61 vis provided on the lower edge ,of the flange or web v43b of the carrier block 38b which lug, when the block 38b is in place, Aextends into the pocket 60 and underlies the ledge or lug 59 for securing the carrier block and particularly one end thereof in place. The other end of said carrier block 38b'is preferably secured in place, in the present embodiment, by means of a Cotter or other retaining device 62 extending through apertures`63 in the walls of the combined casting so as to be positioned. directly over an outstanding lip or lug portion 6.4 on the lower edge of the flange or web portion 43b on the carrier block 38b at the opposite end from the lip 61.

lug portion 59c formed thereon. lnstead of the carrier block 38c being formed with flanges depending from the edges of the upper web 41C, one of said flanges 42C is inset from the edge of thel web 41 and provided with an outstanding flange or rib leaving an inset or channel-shape portion 66 which is of sufficient-size for allowing the carrier block 38c to pass the pairy of lugs 67 arranged on the combined casting lc'.
It will be noted that the block 38c must be elevated from its normal position to pass the lugs G7 and, after insertion in place, said lugs serve to prevent loss or undesired removal of said block as well as the lip 61C thereon and the ledge 59c on the combined casting. The end of the carrier block 38c adjacent the lugs G7 is Acorrespondingly formed with lugs 68 so that, when in place,
; a slot 89 is provided between the lugs 67 and 68 and a flat cotter or other retaining device .10 may be applied in said slot, as illustrated, and serves to lock the carrier block 38 in place and prevent undesired removal thereof.
By virtue of the aforedescribod const-ruction, it will be apparent that I have devised a combined casting with an associated coupler carrier block, the parts being so constructed. that the block is readily applied and removed so that the same may be re- `placed when worn thereby protecting the combined casting from wear and prolonging the life thereof to a great extent.`

3. A combined casting comprising portions serving, respectively, as a striking castingand coupler carrier iron, said carrier iron portion being provided with a pocket in its upper face for receiving a carrier block and a ledge portion overlying the pocketed portion of the carrier iron, and a carrier block seated in said pocket and provided with a lug portion underlying said ledge portion of the casting for retaining the blockin position.
4. A combined casting comprising portions serving, respectively as a striking casting and coupler carrier iron, said carrier iron portion having an upper web shaped. to provide a pocket for receiving a carrier block, a carrier block positioned thereon, one.
of the connecting sides of said casting being apertured for receiving said block, and a retaining member engaging corresponding portions on the carrier iron and block for preventing undesired removal thereof.
5. A .combined casting comprising portions serving, respectively, as a strikingasting and coupler carrier iron, a carrier'block positioned on the upper surface of said carrier iron and provided with an outwardly flanged portion, said casting being provided with a corresponding ledge ortion extending over said flange for retaining the block inposition.
6. A combined casting comprising portions serving, respectively, as a striking casting and coupler carrier iron a carrier block positioned on the upper surface of said carrier iron and provided with an outwardly flanged portion, said casting being provided. with a corresponding ledge ortionexxending over said .flange for retaining the block in position and retaining means cooperating with corresponding portions of the casting and block for preventing undesired removal of said block.
7. In combination with the center sills of a car,A a combined casting comprising portions serving,l respectively, as a striking L5 casting and coupler carrier iron, and provided with rearwardly extending ears connected with the webs of the center sills and a shelf portion over the carrier iron portion of the casting extending rearwardly beyond 120 the ears and with its top surface substantially flush with the tops of the center sills, said carrier iron portion being formed with a pocket on its upper face and with a replaceable carrier block seated in said pocket 125 and adapted for supporting an associated coupler.
8. In combination with the center sills of a car, a combined casting comprising portions serving, respectively, as a striking cast- 3a ing and coupler carrier iron and provided with rearwardly extending ears connected to` the adjacent web portions of the center sills and bifurcated for receiving an associated draft'key therebetween, said carrier iron portion being formed on its upper face with marginal ribs and a carrier .block seated on said upper face and secured in position by means ot said ribs, said casting being apertured above the level of the carrier iron portion for receiving the block when inserted endwise.
9. In combination with the center sills of acar, a combined casting comprising portions serving, respectively, as a striking casting and coupler carrier iron, and formed with extensions serving as'the front portions l.the pocketed portion o of cheek plates, said extensions being connected to the adjacent web portions of the center sills, said carrier iron portion being formed with flanges aleng its upper surface and the walls of the casting adjacent said carrieriron portion being apertured for receiving a carrier block therethrough, the'V flanges onsaid carrier iron portion serving fer retaining said block in place on the carrier iron portion.
10. In combination with the center sills of a car, an integral casting comprising portions. serving, respectively, as a striking castf ing and coupler carrier iron, andy provided with extensions serving as the forward portions of cheek plates and connected to the adjacent portions of the-center sills, said carrier iron portion being provided with a lpocket in its upper face for receiving a caring, respectively, as a' striking casting and' v coupler carrier iron, and provided with rear- `wardly extending ears connected with the adjacent portions of the center sills and a substantially horizontal shelf portion eX- tending rearwardly from the striking casting portion, a portion of the shelf extendin l rearwardly between the sills and connected with the cover plate, and end sill, said carrier iron portion being formed with a substantially horizontal web portion and upright anges on either side thereof, said web portions being positioned below the upper edges of said flanges.
12. In combination with the center sills of a car, a combined casting comprising portions serving, respectively, as a striking casting and coupler carrier iron and provided with rearward extensions connected to. said center sills, said carrier iron portion 'being shaped on its upper surface for retaining a replaceable carrier block, a carrier block positioned thereon, a side of said casting being apertured'for the lengthwise insertion of said block, and a retaining member engaging corresponding portions of the carrier iron and block for preventing undesired removal of said block.
13. A replaceable carrier block comprising an integral casting formed with an upper web bordered by depending flanges along the edges thereof, said web being adapted for supporting an associated coupler and the flanges for engaging the top surface of an associated carrier iron, and an extension on an end of said block adapted to underlie a cooperating shouldered portion of an associated supporting member for retaining it in position.
14. A replaceable carrier block comprising anvupper web portion with anges depending therefrom, a portion of said flanges being formed with an outwardly extending lug for engaging a corresponding portion of an associated carrier iron for retaining said block in position.
l5. In combination with a coupler having a shank and a butt portion of greater overall height than said shank, a combined casting comprising portions serving, respectively, as a coupler stopk and a sill tie member, said.
sill tie member being spaced below said I coupler stop portion a distance greater than the overalll height of the coupler butt, and a removable carrier block adapted to seat on said sill tie member with its top a distance below the coupler stop portion greaterthan the height of the shankbut less than the overall height of the butt of said coupler, said casting being apertured to permit insertion of the block lengthwise into position. 16. In combination with a coupler having a shank and a butt portion of greater overall height than said shank, a combined member comprising portions serving, respectively, as a coupler stop and sill tie portion, the member being constructed for supportingacari rier block above said sill tie portion, and a removable carrier blocksupported by said member above said sill tie portion, the top of said block being so disposed that the coupler is held in substantially horizontal position and cannot be completely removed until said block" has been removed, said vblock being formed with a portion thereoiiv closely underlying an associated part of the casting for retaining the block in place.
17. A combined casting comprising portions serving, respectively, as a striking casting and coupler` carrier iron, said carrier I iron portion being spaced suciently from thestriking casting portion Jtor the reception of a vertically enlarged coupler butt', havingan upper web andi depending side portions, and being indented along its upper ile 6 :tenaces surface, and a replaceable carrier block inserted in said indented portion, said block l being so constructed that when in place it provides normal elearance'thereabove for the stem of an associated coupler but prevents removal or insertion of a vertically enlarged butt thereof.
18. A combined casting comprising'portions serving, respectively, as a striking easting and coupler carrier iron connected by side portions, said carrier iron comprising a substantially horizontal web portion, and upright stiflening tlanges extending between the sides of the casting on either side of said carrier iron, the upper edges of the end portions' of said anges curving upwardly and outwardly to merge into side pbrtions and eifect an increase in depth of said flanges, and a carrier blockpositioned on 20 said web between said ilanges and extending to a height such that sufficient clearance is allowed for the shank of a swivel butt coupler, complete removal of which is possible only upon removal of the block.

20. ln combination with a coupler having Y a shank and a butt portion of greater verti- Mo cal dimension than said shank, a combined casting comprising portions serving, respectively, as a striking casting and a sill tie member, formed with rearwardly extending side portions adapted for connection with the webs of associated sills and formed with rearwardly opening slots adapting said portions 'to function as the forward parts of cheek plates, and a shelf portion adapted to underlie and be connected to an associated 59 sill cover plate, said sill tie member being spaced below said striking casting a distance greater than the vertical dimension of the coupler butt, and a removable carrier block supported by said casting above saidv sill tie member 'with its top disposed so as to support the coupler shank in substantially horizontal position, said coupler being removable only upon removal o the block.
