Barrows, Rochester, N. Y., assignor to The Symington Company, New York, N; Y., a corporation of Maryland Application January 10, 1928, Serial No. 245,744
10 Claims.
This invention relates to combined striking Castings for railway cars and more particularly to such adapted to receive replaceable wear blocks and coupler centering devices.
The principal object of my invention, generally considered, is to provide a combined casting formed with portions serving, respectively, as a coupler stop or striking casting and a sill tie member and provided with means for connecting said casting to the associated sills and sill cover plate of a car, a removable wear block being pro vided above the stem of an associated coupler and a coupler centering device provided therebeneath, whereby upon removal of said block and centering device a coupler of the swivel butt type or one with a relatively large butt may be readily applied or removed.
An object of my invention is to provide a combined striking casting and coupler carrier member suitable for use with a standard or full size swivel butt coupler or one having a butt considerably larger or deeper than the stem and adapted to receive a top wear block and a coupler centering and carrying device simultaneously retained by common fastenings and so formed that upon removal thereof the butt of a swivel butt coupler may be readily applied or withdrawn. Another object of my invention is to provide a combined striking casting and sill tie member adapted for receiving a strikingblock and coupler carrying and centering block respectively disposed above and below the stem of an associated coupler, said upper block being adjustable up and down to maintain the top coupler clearance at a practical minimum. 7
A further object of my invention is to provide acombined striking casting for use with railway cars adapted to receive a striking wear block which is reversible and renewable upon wear or breakage.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a combined casting adapted for connection with the center sills of a car and provided with a coupler supporting and centering block, and a striking portion formed with pockets adapted to receive a striking wear block, said pockets being large enough to permit vertical movement of said striking wear block, adjusting washers or liners being provided between said block and the casting for positioning the same at the desired elevation, common retaining pins being also provided for holding said block and the centering device in place and cotters extending through bosses on saidcombined casting and above said pins for locking the same in place;
Other objects and advantages of the invention relating tothe particular arrangement and construction of the various parts will becomeapparent as the description proceeds. I Referring to the drawings illustrating my invention, the scope'whereof is defined by theappended claims,- v
Figure 1 is'a plan v iew, partly in horizontal section, illustrating, an embodiment of my combined casting with an associated coupler, yoke, connecting key and center sills.
t Figure 2 is a side elevational viewof said casting connected to the associated sills, the associated coupler, yoke and connecting key being removed.- Y
Figure 3 is a front elevational view, partly in vertical section, of ,the' combined casting and its parts detached from; the car underframe.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal vertical sectional View of the construction illustrated in Figure. 1," the yoke being omitted. Q
Referringto the drawingsin detail, like parts being designated by like reference characters there is shown a combined casting 1, formed with a coupler striking or stop portion 2, a sill tie' portion 3, and vertical side or connecting portions 4. Thesill tie member 3 preferably curves down wardly between the lower'ends of the side portions 4 so that its central portion isdisposed lower than its end portions. The sill tie portion is disposed a sufficientdistancezbeneath the, striking portion 2 so that the swivel butt 5 of the coupler 6 may readily be inserted and withdrawn before application of the striking wear block? and centering block or device 8 to bedescribed in detail hereafter.
The side portions 4 of the casting are de sira bly formed with rearwardly extending ear. or Web portions 9, preferably lying on the outsideof and adjacent the web portions 10 of thecenteror draft sills 11 and connectedfthereto by'a plu a of rivets 12. Said web portions 9 are also preferably bifurcated or formed as. upper'and lower sections 13 and 1 4, respectively, leaving notches 15 therebetween, said notches partially embracing the slots lfiprovided in the associated center sills 11 for the reception of the usual form of draft key 17,,.which serves .to connect the coupler, 6 with the yoke 18. For strengthening the websof thesills around the slots 16 rearwardly of the sections 13 and v14L, partial cheek plates of the usual form .(not shown) may be provided to sup! plementsaid sections which form, in effect; the forward portions of check plates. H V a The striking portion -2 is preferably formed with a rearwardly extending web or flange 19 preferably downwardly offset with respect to the forward portion so that the top thereof lies on a level with the tops of the sills 11 and is adapted for connection with the sill cover plate (not shown), said web being apertured for connecting rivets or the like, as indicated at 20. Said web or shelf portion 19 is preferably strengthened by a depending webor flange 21 and rearwardly extending tapering webs 22 which gradually decrease in depth and merge into the web 19.
The upper ends of the side portions 4 are formed with pockets 23 defined by the uppermost web of the striking casting 2,the vertical webs 24 of the side portions 4 which at the pockets 23 are preferably outwardly offset as illustrated, horizontal flanges, webs or walls 25 extending inwardly from and connectingthe offset portions of said web 24 and the depending web or flange 21, previously described. Disposed in said pockets 2,3.is a striking. wear block 7, the ends of which restandv are supported on the flanges 25 and the front web ofwhich normally extends slightly forward of the front edge of the striking portion 2, whereby upon buff the associated coupler normally engages the wear block 7 which relieves the striking portion 2 of wear. The pockets 23 are somewhat larger in vertical dimension than the wear block 7, whereby vertical adjustment of said block is. permitted, said adjustment being desirably effected by positioning shims or washers 26. above or below said block as desired. Said wear block 7 is desirably formed box-shaped in section or isa hollow beam substantially rectangularin cross-section, the front web 27, however, being desirably thicker than the other webs on account of the increased wear thereon, it being understood, however, that this-is not necessary, as the block is reversible.
Beneath the stem of the coupler 6 and above the sill tie portion 3, a centering block or device 8 is provided, said. block preferably swinging betweenthe front and. rear Walls 28 and 29 of the casting or in the hollow space provided between said walls. In order to provide for sidewise movementof saidblock 8, the same is preferably swung onlinks 30at either end. thereof, said links pref- I the links with thebifurcated portionsnotched, as
indicated at 33, to receive the lugs 31 on the links. Said lugs 31 are preferably tapered or decreased in size outwardly. so that they tend to maintaina central position between the bearings 32, which are preferably provided with corresponding depressions or pockets 34, and the bearingportions 33 .on the centering block 8.
Although said. centering block may be of any desiredforn'uin the present embodiment it is shown as substantially I-shaped in section at its intermediate portions, the flanges 35 and 36 thereof being rigidified with respect to the web 37 by vertical gusset webs 38, as illustrated. Said block 8 is preferably deepest at its central portion,.the lower flange 36 curving upwardly and outwardly toward the bearing portions 33 at the ends there.-
of. .The upper flange 35 serves to directly support wiseslippage of ,the coupler with respect thereto.
The sill tie portion 3 beneath the coupler centering and carrying device 8 is preferably generally U-shaped in cross-section, the walls 28 and 29 for that purpose being connected by a web 40, said walls, however, directly beneath the centering device 8 being preferably provided with shelf or inwardly flanged portions 41 braced by gusset p t ons 42 o lim d wnwa dmovem nt o the centering device 8 with respect thereto. Said centering device is readily'inserted or removed sidewise between the webs 28 and 29 of the casting above the flanges 41 and web and beneath the supporting portions 32.
The striking block 7 and coupler carrier and centering device 8 are preferably retained in position by common fastening or connecting means which preferably take the form of vertical pins or rods43, received in apertures 44 in the webs or flanges 25 connecting the offset portions of the webs 24, apertures 45 in the ends of striking wear block 7, apertures 46 in the washers 26, and apertures 4'? in the top of the combinedv casting. or striking portion 2 thereof. For securely locking the rods or pins 43 in place, the striking portion 2 of the casting is preferably formed with, upstanding collars or bosses- 48 around the apertures 37, which collars are provided with horizontal apertures 49therethroughfor receiving cotters or other retaining. devices 50, whereby undesired removal or loss of the pins 43 is prevented.
Inasmuch as the lower ends of said pins 43 engage the topsv of the supporting links, 30 for the centering device 8, said links are retained in position and prevented from loss or undesired removal by the sam fastening means as hold the striking block 7 in place. Although these pins prevent unseating of the links from their bearings-34, they of course donot prevent removal, of the centering: device or block 8 from the lower ends of the links. This is, however, prevented. when the coupler is in place, by. the limited clearance between said centering device and coupler, whereby it is impossible to remove either the centering device or the striking block while the pins 43, are in position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have devised: a combined striking casting and sill tie member which is formed with pockets in the upper portions thereof to receive a top or striking wear block and the lower portionv thereof. is formed to receive a. coupler supporting and centering device or block, both of said blocks being simultaneously retained by the same or common fastenings. Any. large amount of shear on. the. fastenings 43 is avoided by having the wear block. 7 normally abut the flange 21. The upper wear block is formed adjustable up and downfor keeping the top clearance at a practical minimum. Said adjusting means preferably takes the for-m of washerswhich are held. in place bythe pins which retain the locking and. centering device in position. The striking casting is so formed that upon removal of the block and. centering device, an aperture of, ample size isprovided for the insertion or withdrawal of. the coupler 6 and particularly the swivel butt portion 5. thereof-which. as will be understood, is of greater size than the butt ofa rigid stem coupler. By providing aremovable block above the stem incombination with the centering device, not only, is it possible to insert and remove the butt of the coupler while assembled, especially as the flange. or web 21. is decreased in depth above said. coupler and thesilltie portion downwardly curved directly beneath the coupler, but the clearance above said coupler' may be maintained by adjusting the position of the upper block '7 by changing the washrespects in that the upper wearing portions thereof are renewable.
