Description

ROD ELEVATOR Filed 001:. 26, 1929 Patented May 5, 1931 STATES UNETE CHARLES A. ADAMS, OF HUMBLE, TEXAS ROD ELEVATOR Application filed October 26, 1929.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a rod elevator.
One object of the invention is to provide a novel type of elevator, particularly designed for use in handling pump sucker rods. 2
Another object of the invention is to provide anovel type of elevator applicable to the sucker rods of deep well pumps and to useful in handling said rods while the same are being made up and let down into the well or broken up in withdrawing the same from the well.
A further feature of the invention is to provide a novel type of elevator that may be quickly and easily applied to the sections of the rod and which will securely hold said sections against accidental displacement and which is at the same time of very simple construction, is composed of few parts and consequently may be very cheaply produced. With the above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, arrangement of parts and use, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 shows a plan view of the elevator. Figure 2 shows a front elevation, and 33 Figure 3 shows a fragmentary side view.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the elevator body which is preferably formed of a single piece of material and which also preferably has smooth upper and under surfaces. This body has a vertical rod bearing 2 therethrough whose upper end is preferably chanipfered forming a downwardly converging seat 3. One side of the body has a diagonal slot 4 whose upper and lower ends are disposed on opposite sides of the bearing 2 and the upper and lower ends of said hearing are widened as at 5, 6 and merge into the corresponding ends of the slot. A suspending bail 7 is provided, whose side arms are pivotally connected to the body 1,
preferably, by means of the oppositely disposed spindles 8, 8, carried by said body, which work in the bearings 9, 9 at the lower ends of the arms of said bail.
In application to the sucker rod 10, the
Serial No. 402,564.
body may be turned so as to align the slot 4 with the said rod and the rod is then passed through said slot into the bearing 2 and the elevator then turned to upright position so that the enlarged shoulder 11 of the rod will seat in the seat 3. The construction of the elevator as above described affords the upper and lower overlapping, rod retaining, abutments 12, 13 which prevent the accidental displacement of the rod from the eleva- 59 tor while the same is in use.
The body 1, is provided with the lateral stops 14, 14, on the slotted side of said body. These stops are provided so that the bail 7 can not be turned relative to the body so as to inclose the slot 4. In applying the ole vator to the rod 10 it is allowed to rest on the casing head through which the rod works and when the line through which the elevator is handled is permitted to slack, the bail 7 will fall down onto the support in a plane with the plane of the body 1 as shown in Figure l, and it is desirable to prevent the bail from falling down into position to close the slot 4. Otherwise, when an additional section of the rod is attached to the one to which the elevator is applied and the rod is suspended in the derrick, the elevator could not be removed since the rod would extend through the hail of the elevator. The stops 14, 14 are for that reason provided so that the rod in being made up will not be inadvertently made up in such manner as to prevent the release of the elevator therefrom after the sections are screwed to 35 gether.
The drawings and description illustrate what is now considered a preferred form of the invention, by way of illustration only, while the broad principle of the invention will be defined by the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A rod elevator including an elevator body having a vertical bearing adapted to receive a rod, said body having a diagonal side slot extending from said bearing through one side of the body and through which the rod may be inserted into said bearing, an upper and lower abutment carried by the body and overlapping and forming retaining means to retain the rod against displacement from said bearing, a bail having side arms pivotally connected to the body and a stop on the slotted side of the body engageable with one of said arms.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
CHARLES A. ADAMS.
