This invention relates to certain novel imp'rovements in sealing means for paper bags and the like and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction 5 of this character which will be positive in use and economical in manufacture.

It is among the objects of my invention to provide a sealing arrangement for paper bags and the like which may be formed as a portion of the bag. n

Another object of the invention is to provide a device 'of the above described character which will be arranged to embody an ad-.

hesive medium thereon.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a construction of the above described character which will be arranged so that it may be used to seal bags filled in different amounts and to arrange the device so that it willfunction to seal the bag at any desired point in proportion to the amount said bag is filled.

Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

- The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, showing't-he preferred form of construction and in which a Fig. 1 is a front elevational view depicting a paper bag constructed in accordance with my invention;

wall 11, a back wall 12, a lower wall 13, and side walls 14. The upper edge of the front wall 11 embodies a portion 15 which is preferably disposed lower than the corresponding ortion of the back wall 12 in order to. facilitate the distending of the bag which when not in use is folded'along the fold lines 16 in the manner well understood in the art so as to be substantially flat.

Tabs 17 and 18 are defined by cutting the side walls 14 along the lines 19 and these tabs 17 and 18 are connected to the back wall 12 and extend outwardly therefrom under nor mal conditions in the manner illustrated in Fig. 3. As best illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 both sides of the tabs 17 and 18 are provided with an adhesive medium of the type which is preferably intended to be moistened in order that the tabs may be secured in position as will be described.

After the bag 10 has been distended in the manner well understood the material is introduced thereinto. The upper edges of the walls 11 and 12 are then brought into engagement with each other and the portions of the side walls 14 between these upper edges and the level of the material introduced into the bag 10 will be folded along the fold'lines 16 so as to be disposed inwardly. The walls 11 and 12 and the inwardly folded portions of the walls 14 are then folded upon each other with the tabs 17 and 18 projecting therefi-om. The manner in which these edges are folded is best illustrated in Fig. 5. are moistened and the tabs 17 and 18 are then folded over the adjacent portions into the position illustrated in Fig. 4 and by reason of the moistened adhesive surfaces the tabs 17 and 18 will be secured in position. The surfaces of the tabs 17 and 18 viewed in Figs. 3 and 1 are then moistened and the folded walls 11 and 12 are folded into the position illustrated in Fig. 6 and because of the moistened adhesive surfaces on the tabs 17 and 18 these folded portions willbe secured in the position illustrated in Fig. 6 and obviously ba will be very effectively sealed.

it is manifest from the foregoing description that I have provided an arran ment which will greatly facilitate the sea g of paper bags and the like. It is appargrlit tihat ag le in the device is arranged so that a an amount may be expeditiously sealed for it is apparent that the tabs 17 and 18 may be folded in either direction and by reason of the adhesive surfaces thereon these portions will be effectively retained in position. By reason of the folding of the portions on the walls 11 and 12 upon each other it is apparent that leakage from the bag will be very effectively prevented. It is manifest that the tabs 17 and 18 need not be provided with an adhesive medium since an adhesive medium be introduced thereonto at the time the ma sealing is desired but I have found it preferable to provide these tabs with an adhesive medium as'above set forth.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

A paper bag or the like having tabs cut from the end walls thereof and joined to one of the side walls, said tabs having an adhesive medium on both surfaces thereof.

2. A paper bag or the like having tabs cut from the end walls thereof and joined to one of the side walls adjacent the opening into said bag to provide securing portions when the walls of said bag are folded upon each other.
