This invention relates to a protector designed primarily for use in connection with straw hats although it can be used equally as well with other types of hats.

It is an object of the invention to provide a protector in the form of a collapsible or foldable cover adapted normally to be worn inside of the hat, means being provided for holding it firmly against the crown of the hat so that it will not render the hat less comfortable to wear.

A further object is to provide a cover which is light, can be cheaply manufactured, and can be readily placed in or removed from position within the hat.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a sheet of oiled paper,

rubberized fabric or any other suitable material adapted to protect the hat from rain. This sheet of material is shaped to provide a crown portion 10, a continuous side portion 9, and rim portion 8. When it is desired to pleated rim portion resting thereagainst, is

then folded inwardly against the crownportion, it being necessary in order to effect this operation, to pleat the'side portion and also the previously pleated and folded rim portion. These relative positions of the parts have been shown in Figure 5. When thus folded the protector is so proportioned as to fit snugly within the hat against the crown thereof. Elastic cords 3 are connected tocertain of the folds of the protector and are used for holding the protector to the hat as hereinafter explained.

For the purpose of holding the folded protector within the crown portion of the, hat there is provided a split ring 40f celluloid, spring wire, light resilient metal, or an other suitable material, the same being orm'ed with a marginal flange 5 at its outer edge from which are struck short prongs 6. The

ends of the flanges are inturned to provide finger pieces indicated at 7 After the protector has been folded as against the folded protector. The ring is s then released whereupon it will spread so as to press firmly against the hat, causing the small prongs 6 to bite slightly thereinto. Thus the. protector will be held securely in position at a pointwhere it will not mar the comfort of the wearer.

When it is desired to protect a hat H in which the cover is located, the ring 4 is contracted and removed from the hat. It is thus possible to remove the protector which is unfolded, there being enough material in the folds to allow the same to extend outwardly to form a rim portion 8 extending from a continuous side portion 9 which is provided at the margin of the crown portion 10. After the cover has thus been unfolded it is slipped on to the hat as shown in Figure 4, it being understood that the rim portion 8 will cover the rim of the hat and extend slightly therebeyond. The elastic cords are slipped under the rim of the hat as shown by broken lines in Figure 1 and in section in Figure 4 and the protector is thus held securely to the hat. After the protector has been removed the till 4 can be reinserted into the hat.

l 'hat is claimed is A hat protector formed in a single sheet of waterproof material including a crown portion, a continuous side portion integral therewith, a continuous outstanding rim portion integral with the side portion, and opposed elastics connected to the rim portion at opposite sides of the side portion for embracing the rim portion of a hat to hold the protector thereto, said side portion being adapted to fold inwardly to form an annular series of pleats lapping the crown portion, and said rim portion of the protector being foldable into an annular series of pleats lapping the pleats in the folding side portion, all portions of the folded side and rim portions overlying the crown portion, said crown portion constituting means for concealing the folded side and mm portions when the protector is inserted into a hat against the crown thereof, and a resilient split ring having a marginal clamping flange and normally spaced terminal finr pieces, said ring being contractible and insertable into a hat for engagement with the folded protector thereby to support it in the hat and against the crown portion of the hat.
