Description
April 21, 1931.
A. LuFf v GARMENT LEG Filed June 28, 1929 INV NTO BY ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 21, 1931 Unrren STATES PATENT OFFICE ARTHUR LUFT, OF LYNBROOK, NEW YORK GARMENT LEG application filed June 28,
one side for convenience in inserting the foot of a wearer and more particularly to means for closing said opening, retaining it closed and holding the leg portion down toward the foot of the wearer.
A principal object of the invention is to provide a garment of the character described which may be made of any appropriate or suitable material which cooperates properly with definite fastening means for closing and holding closed the side opening in a leg there- ]5 of and which readily adapts itself to the application of well known snap fasteners.
A further object of the invention is to provide a strong and durable fastening means for the lower end of the leg opening, which will be convenient to manipulate and which will co operate efficiently with an instep strap acting to hold the leg portion of the garment in proper position adjacent the foot of the wearer.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the description of a particular physical embodiment selected to illustrate the invention progresses and the novel features will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail and the particular physical embodiment selected to illustrate the invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 illustrates a childs legging to which the invention has been applied; Fig. 2, is an enlarged view illustrating the bottom of the leg opening fastening means of applicants invention together with the instep strap fastening means; Fig. 3, shows the same parts as are illustrated by Fig. 2 but with some of 4 them in a separated position.
1929. Serial N0; 374,426.
In the drawings, 1 designates generally what is commonly known and called, a child s legging. This legging embodies a body portion 2 and leg portions 3 and 4.
Both of the leg portions 8 and at on the out- 59 side portion thereof are provided with an opening as at 5. This opening extends to the bottom of the leg portion and is preferably provided, for convenience, with some one of the well known fastening means embodying interlocking members as 6 and 7 which are brought into engagement by means of the slide 8 provided with a finger gripping piece 9.
The closing means for the opening 5 are of such a nature, that although the slide 8 may 6 be drawn to the lowest portion of the openmg, if sufiicient force is exerted upon the sides 10 and 11 of the opening they may be separated. In order to prevent this applicant provldes a tab 12. This tab is rigidly attached to the portion 10 as by sewing along the line 13. The tab 12 is provided with one part 14 of a separable snap fastener, the cooperating part of which 15 is attached to the side 11. When portion 14 is caused to cooperate with the portion 15 this separable fastening means Wlll interengage so as to prevent a separation of the sides 10 and 11 of the opening 5 and at the same time the tab will overlie the slide 8 so that it will not be danger of catching in some ob ect as the wearer brushes against it.
In addition to the separable fasteners already mentioned the tab 12 is provided with one part 16 of a separable fastener the other portion of which 17 is attached to the free end of an instep strap 18. The other end of the lnstep strap 18 is firmly attached, as by sewing, to the inside portion of the leg 3.
hen a wearer desires to put on such a gar- 5 ment as has been hereinbefore described the opening 5 is caused to open as wide as possible by moving the slide 8 to the upper extremity thereof. This affords ample space within which the wearer may insert the foot through leg 3. After the foot has been inserted the opening 5 is closed by drawing the slide 8 downwardly by grasping the finger grip 9. The tab 12 is then placed over the slide 8 and the member 14 of the separable fastening means is caused to engage with the member 15 thereby positively preventing any separation of the edges of the opening 5 and also covering the slide 8 so that it is out of sight and out of danger of catching objects passed by the wearer. After the tab 12 has been posi tioned as hereinbefore described then the instep strap 18 is brought under the foot of the wearer and the separable fastening side of the opening, said tab further provided with another part of a separable fasten ing means, an elastic instep stra attached to the bottom of the leg opposite t e opening and having its free end provided with a portion of a separable fastening means for cooperating with the said another separable fastening means attached to the tab, the said tab when the first mentioned separable fastening means are engaged overlying the finger piece of the opening fastener.
ARTHUR LUFT.
means 17 is engaged with this cooperating part 16 on the tab 12. As this instep strap is preferably made of resilient or elastic material the strap serves to hold the leg ortion down toward the foot of the wearer.
y attaching the free end of the strap 18 to an intermediate point of the tab 12, the downward pull of the strap is transmitted to both sides of the legging thereby exerting a constant pull upon each side of the bifurcation tending to draw the parts together. This constant pull is enhanced by making the strap of elastic material and causes both the front and back portions of the legging to fit snugly over the shoe.
Although I have particularly described but one physical embodiment of my invention and explained the principle and construction thereof, nevertheless, I desire to have it understood that the form selected is merely illustrative but does not exhaust the possible physical embodiments of means underlying my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. As an article of manufacture, a legging provided with an opening in the side thereof, means for closing the opening and retaining it closed including a part operable by the fingers of a person, a tab attached at the extremity of the opening on one side thereof and provided with one part of a separable fastener, a cooperating part of the separable fastener attached to the other side of the opening, another part of a separable fastener attachedto the tab and a strap attached at one end to the legging opposite the opening thereof and the other end provided with a cooperating fastener for engagement with the last mentioned portion of a separable fastener attached to the tab.
2. A legging having a side opening in the leg, means for closing the leg opening including a fastener embodying a slide including a finger piece which is positioned at the bottom of the legging when in fastened position, a tab attached to one side of the opening adjacent the fastened position of the slide and provided with one part of a separable fastenin means, a cooperating part of the separa le fastening means attached to the other
