Description

Patented Apr. 14, 1931 DANIEL. s. wA'rEItHoUsE, or Los ANGELES, CALIFORNIA f TENT Application led July 7, 1927. l Serial No. 203,998.
This invention relates to improvements in tents, and has'for one of its principal objects the provision of a tent which shall be readily portable, and which, moreover, 5 will combine all the advantages of the usual tent withoutv the disadvantages thereof.
One of the important objects of this invention is to provide, in a tent or the like, a structure supported without the use of a center pole, which, accordingly, provides considerably greater room in the interior and also provides for a greater economy of time and eiiiciency in the setting up thereof.
Another and further important object of this invention is the use, in a tent, of an im- A proved connecting ork head member for the supports, whereby a very secure and stable structure will result, while at the same time being light and portable.
Another and still further important object of this invention is to provide, in a tent or the like, means for readily Ventilating the same without discomfort to the occupants thereof even in rainy or stormy weather.
Other and further important objects of the invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the accompanying drawings and following specification. A
They invention, in a preferred form, is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the'improved tent of this invention, showing certain of the novel features thereof. v
Figure 2 is a detail view showing the supports and the top connecting structure there- Figure 3 is a top plan view .of the supports and the connecting members.-
Figure 4 is a detail view illustrating a slight modification of the head or supporting structure. Y
Figure 5 is a detail View of one of the joints in the tent supports, showingthe operation thereof. A
Figure 6 is a detail view of one of the connecting members for the upper portions of the supports, illustrating the .interior construction.
As shown-in the drawings:
The reference numerals 10 indicate gen-k erally the sides of a tent, having the usual openingk or Hap 12 therein, and provided with holes for readily detachable button membersv or similar devices 14C, whereby the v canvas may be removed from the poles 16 on short notice whenever desired,
' Adapted for use upon the ground over which the tent is to be placed is a heavy canvas sheet 18, preferably square, so'as to conform to the dimensions of the base 0f the tent when erected, and positioned over the top ofthe tent'is a cover member 20, pref'- erably secured tothe canvas by means vof stitches or the like 22. v
Ihe frame of the tent comprises the support members or poles 16, whichr are jointed as shownl in Figure 5, metal plates 20 and 22 being afiixed adjacent each joint, the f plates being hinged at 24 and having corresponding .openings 26" therein, through which a locking pin or the like 28 is passed when the supports 16 are extended ready for use. l" The locking pin 28y is secured to the support 16 by means of av chain -or the like 30, so that there willvbe no danger of its loss. f
TES PATENT orrflciizffk 'ooi Connecting members in the shape of colfk lapsible struts 40 are hingedly attached to thefsupports 16 near their upper endsby means of metal plates or the like 42 and pins 44, these connecting members being jointed at the middle so asto allow of a folding together ofthe support members 16. This joint iswaccomplished by' pivotally connect# ing the ends ofthe members 40 by means of pins or rivets 50 to a plate 52, which is bent into U-shape to cover both faces of the members 40. The lower opposed ends of this U-shaped plate 52 are connected by means of a rivet or pin 54, which acts as a stop for the rounded ends of the members 40, preventing their being pushed too closely together in the process of folding the tent, and thereby eliminating any danger of tearing or damaging the canvas.
At their upper ends the supports 16 are pivotally connected to a suitable connecting e head structure, preferably formed ofA a single plate 60, having four pairs of radially extending arms 62 to which the supports 16 are pivotally attached by means of rivets or the like 64. l 5 A slight modification of this head construction is shown in Figure 4, wherein the same is composed of four strips of metal 7 0, fastened together' at their center crossing points by means of rivets 72, and having 10 their endsybent through ninety degrees, as n shown at 74, to provide for the passageof pivotal pins or rivets 7 6 to which the members 16 are attached. Y
The lower edge of one of the sides of the tent has two upwardly extending slits cut therein so that this edge maybe folded upwardlyand inwardly to leave the ventilating space as shown at 80 in Figure 1. It will be obvious that herein is provided 20 avery strong, simple, light, and durable tent construction, which, while being suiciently large to accommodate quite a number of persons, can be readily folded into a small compass so as to be conveniently handled for auto camping trips or the like. Further, the construction is such that there is no difliculty in setting up the tent even under most adverse conditions of weather. In fact, it can Vbe practically set up from I0 the interior, thereby affording a safe shelter even during this process.Y I am aware thatv many changes may be made and numerous details of construction varied throughout a wide range without de- .l parting from the yprinciples of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereonA otherwise vthan as necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention: 40 A tent, comprising a center head includ# ing a plate, four pairs of bifurcated eXtensions integral Ywith the plate, a plurality of foldable supports pivotally connected to the head, a cover member vremovably attached to the supports, and collapsible means for connecting and bracing the supports at points removed from the connecting head, said means comprising struts hinged at their middle portions, and means for maintaining said strut members slightly separated from each other when folded, said means com# prising Va pin mounted at the center joint of said foldable struts and positioned in the y hinge member. Y In testimony whereof I have aixed my signature. Y y
