FOLDING BACKREST.

To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that T, JOHN J. VIEIRA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Contra Costa and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foldlug Backrests; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will onable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to back rests and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved back rest for use when sitting on lawns, beaches and the like, which can be folded and collapsed so as to occupy a relatively small area so that the same can be readily carried.

A further object of the invention is to provide an improved portable back rest for use when sitting on lawns, beaches and the like, which can be readily adjusted to the desired angle to suit the user.

A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved collapsible canvas back rest of the above character, which is durable and eliicient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one that can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which:

Referring to the drawings in detail. wnercin similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 generally indicates the improved back rest, which includes spaced supporting bars 2 having a piece of canvas or other fabric 3 secured at its side edges thereto. provided with a supporting frame 4:, which includes a pair of spaced bracing bars 5 which are pivotally connected adjacent the upper ends of the bars 2 by means of links 6, which are preferably arranged in pairs and engage the opposite faces of the bars 2 and 5. The terminals of the links 6 are pivotally connected by means of pivot pins 7 extending through the links and into the bars 2 and 5. The links permit the supporting frame 4i and the back frame to be positioned substantially parallel to each other when the rest is in its collapsed position and at an angle to each other when the rest is in its operative position. The forward upper edges of the bars 5 are beveled downwardly at an angle of substantially forty-five degrees to form a face 8 for engaging the rear surface of the bars 2 and when the bars 5 are positioned in this manner the back frame is positioned in substantially a vertical plane. When it is desired to position the back frame at an angle of forty-five degrees, the frames are swung toward each other and the back frame is brought downwardly so as to position the upper edge of the bars 2 which have their rear upper edges beveled downwardly at an angle of forty-five degrees to present a face 9 into engagement with the forward faces of the supporting bars 5. The bars 2 and 5 of the back frame and supporting frame are pivotally connected adjacent their lower ends by means of hinged links 10 and 11 which are pivotally secured at their outer ends to the bars by means of pivot pins 12. The inner terminals of the links 10 and 11 are hingedly connected together by means of the pin 13 which extends through the same, and the link 10 is provided with laterally extending lugs let formed on its upper edge which is adapted to engage the upper surface of the link 11 so as to limit the downward movement of the links in relation to each other and prevent the rest from collapsing.

The bars 5 of the supporting frame are attached together by suitable cross braces 15, each of which'includes sections 16 and 17 hingedly connected at their rear ends by pivot pin 18. The outer terminals of the sections are pivotally connected to the outer faces of the bars 5 by means of pivot pins 19. The section 16 is provided with a laterally projecting lug 20 which is adapted to engage the upper surface of the section 17 and limit the downward movement of the sections in relation to each other.

When it is desired to collapse the frame, the sections 16 and 17 are swung upwardly as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings so as to position the bars 5 and 2 in relatively close parallel relation. The links 10 and 11 are likewise swung upward and'the back frame and the supporting frame moved inwardly toward each other, which will position the same in substantially abutting parallel relation. The canvas web can thus be folded around the frames if so desired and held in position by suitable straps or the like.

A seat is provided by extending the fabric 3 at its lower end so that when the back rest is in use, the seat 3 may rest directly on the ground.

it will be seen that by providing the laterally extending lugs 14: and 20 at the joints of this device, danger of the fingers of the party folding or unfolding the back rest being caught and pinched in the joints of the back rest will be eliminated.

By referring to Fig. i of the drawings, it will be seen that when this device is in folded position, the seat- 8 may befolded around the bars and held in such position by straps or other suitable means, if desired.

From the foregoing description it can be seen that an improved collapsible and portable back rest is provided which can be readily set up in operative position or folded when desired.

In practice, I have found that the form of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efficient and practical; yet realizing the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire 'to emphasize that various minor changes in detail of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required without sacrificing-any of the advantages of my invention as set forth.

2; A folding back rest for use on lawns, beache and the like comprising a back frame including a pair of spaced supporting members and canvas webbing for these members, a supporting frame including a pair of spaced brace bars, and cross braces secured to said mentioned brace bars, said cross braces including a pair of hingedly connected sections having their terminals hingedly secured to the first mentioned brace bars, and hingedly connected linksv pivotally secured to the back and brace frames, adjacent the lower ends thereof, the upper terminals of the supporting member and brace bars having their edges beveled downwardly at an angle of forty-five degrees, as and for the purpose specified.

A back rest of the class described comprising a collapsible back including a flexible member having one edge extended past the lower edge of the back to serve as a seat, a supporting brace frame, links connecting the upper terminals ofthe supporting base frame with said back, said supporting hack frame including hinged transverse members having a limited pivotal movement in one directiomand hinged leaves pivotally con necting the lower portion of the supporting brace frame with the lower portion of the back.
