This invention relates to lavatories and has relation more particularly to a device of this kind especially designed and adapted for use in barber shops, beauty parlors or the like for use in shampooing or otherwise washing and treating the hair.

he invention has for an object to provide a device of this kind constructed in a manner to assure the collection of the cleansing fluid O with substantial elimination of splashing.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of his kind wherein the person to be treated may be positioned with respect to the lavatory to place the head in a manner to assure effective collection of the cleansing fluid directly upon and through the hair of the person.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind which assures comfort to the person whose head is being sham- A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind having a portion formed to receive the neck of a'person to be treated, together with means coacting with such portion to hold a Turkish towel or other article in position to allow the neck and if desired the adjacent portion of the head to rest upon such towel or other article.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved lavatory whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be better '5 understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a lavatory constructed in accordance with an embodi- 0 ment of my invention, the coacting water fixtures being diagrammatically indicated by brokenlines;

Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the device as illustrated in Figure 1 at substantially the transverse center thereof, an associated water fixture being also diagramn'iatically indicated by broken lines;

Figure3 is a fragmentary detailed horizontal sectional view taken through the upper or outer portion of the drain board to one side of the neck receiving opening.

As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, my improved lavatory comprises a basin B formed to provide a conventional drain 1 and overflow 2, and provided at its rear with a transversely disposed upstanding splash board 8. The forward portion of the basin B is continued by an upwardly and forwardly inclined drain board 4 preferably disposed on an angle of approximately thirty degrees and with the major portion of the board 4: of dish-formation gradually merging with the bowl proper. The drain board 4 is of a trans verse diameter less than that of the bowl structure resulting in the inner portion of the drain board being inwardly offset at 5 from opposite sides. The side marginal portions of the bowl structure and the drain board are defined by the depending skirts 7 while the portions of the skirts 7 extending along the sides of the drain board are gradually re duced in length at their inner portions and rather abruptly reduced in length at their upper and outer portions,as at 8,to facilitate the application of a chair below the upper or high portion of the drain board.

Fitting from above within the drain opening 1 is a separating cup 9 provided with suitable openings 10 in its side wall. The pur pose of this cup 9 is to collect hair pins or other articles which would otherwise int-erfere with the desired draining out of the fluid collected within the basin B.

The upper or outer end portion of the drain board 4: is provided with a recess 11 of a size to conveniently receive the neck of a person to be treated and preferably to receive the back portion of the neck so that the hair will be directed over the board l and thereby materially facilitating the desired application to and passage through the hair of the cleansing fluid. This fluid as it passes through the hair and over the scalp of the person will be readily received upon the drain board 4 and carried down into the basin B proper with a minimum of splashing or spilling.

The rear shelf portion 12 of the basin B is adapted to be provided with the water fixtures 14 of any desired type.

It is generally found advantageous to position a Turkish towel or the like upon the upper or outer portion of the drain board 4 upon which the neck and the adjacent portion of the head of the person being treated may rest. To facilitate the desired maintenance of such towel or kindred article in applied position, I provide a spring member 15 adapted to engage within the recess 11 and eflfectively maintain the towel or the like in desired position. This spring 15, which is of bow formation, has its extremities laterally and oppositely directed to be received within the recesses 16 in the portions of the upper or free end edges of the board 4 at opposite sides of the recess 11. Either or both of these extensions 17 may be provided with an eye member 18 through which a pin or the like may be insorted, said pin being also directed through suitably positioned openings 19 in the upper end portion of the bowl. It is also to be stated that the board 4 is disposed substantially entirely above the upper or induction end of the overflow 2 so that the hair to be treated may be spread out upon the board 4 and without extending Within the dirty water in the bowl B. This is of particular advantage in shampooing as it provides for an effective draining of the hair without subjecting the hair to the soiled liquid.

From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a lavatory constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim A lavatory comprising a basin the forward portion of which is continued by an upward ly and forwardly inclined drain board, the drain board being dished and provided with side flanges for strength, the depth of the dished portion and the width of the flanges increasing in inverse proportion to the distance from the bowl, the upper end of the drain board having a neck receiving recess and being provided with a flange for protect ing the clothing of the person to be treated,

and the drain board having a recess in at least one edge thereof to receive the hip of the operator.
